    Dynamics and rupture of planar electrified liquid sheets (2001)

    Notes: We investigate the stability of a thin two-dimensional liquid film when a uniform electric field is applied in a direction parallel to the initially flat bounding fluid interfaces. We consider the distinct physical effects of surface tension and electrically induced forces for an inviscid, incompressible nonconducting fluid. The film is assumed to be thin enough and the surface forces large enough that gravity can be ignored to leading order. Our aim is to analyze the nonlinear stability of the flow. We achieve this by deriving a set of nonlinear evolution equations for the local film thickness and local horizontal velocity. The equations are valid for waves which are long compared to the average film thickness and for symmetrical interfacial perturbations. The electric field effects enter nonlocally and the resulting system contains a combination of terms which are reminiscent of the Kortweg–de-Vries and the Benjamin–Ono equations. Periodic traveling waves are calculated and their behavior studied as the electric field increases. Classes of multimodal solutions of arbitrarily small period are constructed numerically and it is shown that these are unstable to long wave modulational instabilities. The instabilities are found to lead to film rupture. We present extensive simulations that show that the presence of the electric field causes a nonlinear stabilization of the flow in that it delays singularity (rupture) formation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using a nonlinear cavity element, a liquefying gallium mirror, we demonstrate stable, self-starting, passive Q-switching of both erbium and ytterbium fiber laser cavities operating at wavelengths of 1550 and 1030 nm, respectively. The performance at 1550 nm is shown to be equivalent to that achieved with a state of the art semiconductor saturable absorber designed to work at this wavelength. The results highlight the suitability of this tremendously broadband, inexpensive nonlinear medium for a wide range of passive Q-switch applications. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch die Untersuchungen der unspezifischen Esteraseaktivität in den Zellen des peripheren Blutes und der hämatopoetischen Organe konnte gezeigt werden, daß der Monozyt eine signifikante charakteristische Verteilung der Enzymaktivität aufweist, welche ihn von allen anderen Blutzellen unterscheidet. Der Vergleich der Esteraseaktivität des Monozyten mit der Enzymaktivität der Blutzellvorstufen ergab lediglich eine Beziehung mit den Promyelozyten. Dagegen konnte keine Beziehung zwischen Monozyten und retikulosendothelialen Zellen gefunden werden. Die Befunde werden als weiterer Hinweis aufgefaßt, daß Myeloblast und Promyelozyt die Vorstufen der monozytären Reihe darstellen.
    Notes: Summary From the investigation of the non specific esterase activity in the cells of the peripheral blood and of the hemopoietic organs it is apparent that the monocytes exhibit a strong and characteristic, in distribution, enzymatic activity, which differentiates these cells from all the others of the blood. The comparison of the esterase activity of the monocyte with that of the blood cell precursors makes it possible to correlate this cell only with the promyelocytes. No correlation was found between the monocytes and the reticuloendothelial cells. The investigation of the non specific esterase activity offers additional evidence in favour of the opinion of one of us, that the so called myeloblast and the promyelocyte, as shown in Fig. 1, 2 and 3 represent the precursors of the monocytic series.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Technik der Schonung der Vagus-Innervation des Magen-Antrums, und die Durchtrennung der transversalen Äste der Nn. Latarjet ist dieselbe bei beiden Operationen, aber die Durchtrennung der cardioesophagealen Äste des Vagus und der Nerven, welche die in den Magenfundus eintretenden Magenarterien begleiten, ist ersetzt worden durch die transgastrische intramurale Durchtrennung und Excision aller sichtbaren Nervenäste, welche am Magenfundus eintreten. Vollständigkeit dieser Vagotomie wird intraoperativ kontrolliert mittels gastrischer pH-Messung und Messung des Sauerstoffgewebdruckes an der Magenschleimhaut. Ein Jahr bis 18 Monate nach der proximalen transgastrischen Vagotomie bei 74 Patienten mit unkompliziertem Duodenalgeschwür war die Mortalität nihil, die Morbidität unbedeutend, die Symptome der vorhergehenden Ulcera waren verschwunden und Dumping Syndrom, Ulcusrezidiv oder andere bedeutende Komplikationen wurden nicht beobachtet.
    Notes: Summary The technique of preserving the antral vagal nerve supply of the stomach and division of the gastric branches of the nerves of Latarjet is common to both operations, but by replacing the transection of the hiatal cardioesophageal vagus nerve branches (including the nerve branches accompanying the arteries entering the fundus of the stomach) with a transgastric intramural transection and excision of all nerve fibers entering the fundus, a highly selective vagotomy is achieved. Completeness of HSTRV is controlled intraoperatively by a gastric pH meter and by measuring the oxygen tension of the gastric mucosa. One year to 18 months after application of HSTRV in 74 patients with uncomplicated duodenal ulcers, mortality was nil, morbidity insignificant, the previous ulcer symptoms no longer present, and dumping syndrome, recurrence and other significant complications were not observed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Nach Einwachsen von Fibroblasten und Capillaren vom Trachearand bzw. von der Hundearterie in den Graft bildet sich im Lumen eine Basalmembran aus. Diese wird nach 8 Wochen von der Arterie mit Endothelzellen, nach 16 Wochen vom Trachearand mit Microvilizellen besiedelt. Nach 8 Monaten entstehen auf der Trachea durch Metaplasie Flimmerepithelien und Becherzellen. Der Graft wird funktionsgerecht revitalisiert. Beim Gefäßersatz endet die Endothelzellbildung 2–3,5cm ab Anastomose. Im Restgraft wird die Innenschicht nekrotisch und unterliegt im Laufe der Zeit degenerativen Veränderungen.
    Notes: Summary Following ingrowth of fibroblasts and capillaries a basal membrane is formed in previous graft lumen. After 8 weeks, increasing endothelialization of the graft of a canine artery is found starting from the ends. Revitalization of the graft is limited to a rim of 2 – 3.5 cm next to the arterial anastomosis. Degenerative changes occur in the remaining graft segment with time. In tracheal replacement the graft is covered by microvillous cells after 4 to 5 months. With cell metaplasia, ciliated epithelia and goblet cells develop after 8 months. With passing time, the graft is totally revitalized.

    Notes: Summary A histological study of the laryngeal mucosa was carried out in 100 biopsy specimens taken out, within the first 24 h after death, from individuals who died because of extra laryngeal disease. The histological findings were correlated with regard to the age, sex and habits of these individuals and led to the following observations: 1. The squamous epithelium was found to line the laryngeal mucosa in other sites beyond the vocal cords and regardless of the age and sex. 2. Metaplasia and dysplasia of the laryngeal epithelium appear to develop progressively on growing. These lesions are mainly extended to the vocal cords and to the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis in individuals who live in large, crowded cities with high atmosphere pollution as well as in heavy smokers. 3. Contrary to the men, the women show a reduced tendency in the development of such lesions on the laryngeal epithelium. 4. Where the squamous epithelium emerges into the corium, forming crypt-like formations, it appears to be more hyperplastic and more dysplastic. 5. In cases where an extended laryngeal sack was observed the epithelium of the vocal cords presented an extensive squamous metaplasia and dysplasia.
