    Notes: SPARC (secreted protein, acidic and rich in cysteine), a matricellular glycoprotein, modulates the interactions of cells with the extracellular matrix. Studies in null-mice revealed a role of SPARC in wound healing. Here we examined the effect of SPARC in a skin-humanized mouse wound healing model. This model is based in the regeneration of human skin onto the back of nude mice by transplantation of a dermo-epidermal equivalent. The regenerated human skin was excisionally wounded with biopsy punches. At the moment of wounding an adenoviral vector encoding the cDNA for SPARC was intradermally injected. We are currently assessing the effects of in vivo gene transfer of SPARC at the wound site in the healing process. Criticals events of wound healing including reepithelialization, regeneration of dermoepidermal junction and dermal remodeling were studied at different time points postwounding.

    Notes: We report a histogenetic study of the bipolar cells of the chick embryo retina between days 5 and 9, using the Golgi technique. On day 8, at the level of the developing outer plexiform layer, small delicate spines appear on the outer processes of the bipolar cells, which represents the commencement of their dendritic ramification. At a later staige in development che detachment of Landolt's club from the outer limiting membrane is observed in some cells The inner ramifications of the bipolar cell, at the inner plexiform layer, appear later than those of the outer process.

    Notes: This work is a morhological study of the centrifugal fibers in the chick retina. We have classified these fibers in two types: type I centrifugal fibers and type II centrifugal fibers. Type I centrifugal fibers constitute a new model of axonic terminal in the birds retina. These fibers terminate exclusively in the inner plexiform layer where they show long tangential trajectories. Type II centrifugal fibers are coincident with classical ones previously described in the avian retina. With the Golgi method we describe new levels of terminations of these type II centrifugal fibers.

    Notes: The sequence of morphological differentiation of Müller cells in the chick retina was investigated in relation to the differentiation of the retinal neurons using the Golgi method. From the beginning of differentiation, the Müller cell develops spurs and lateral processes. Some of these glial processes become transformed into accessory prolongations of the Müller cell. From the 17th or 18th day of incubation, the morphology of the Müller cells is similar to that of the adult retina. On the basis of their inner prolongation, two types of Müller cells were identified. The first type, with diffuse and abundant descending processes, is identical to that described classically. The second type is a cell characterized by sparse and scanty inner ramifications.This report also describes electron microscopic observations of Müller cells and their enwrapping relationship with the axons of the optic nerve fiber layer.

    Notes: Using the Golgi staining method with the modification suggested by Colonnier (J. Anat. 98:327, 1964), we have carried out a morphological study of the bipolar cells of the chicken and classified them into various morphological types. In the classification given we have described the existence of seven main groups of bipolar cells that differ in shape and spread of their dendritic network. In addition, within each of these groups we have taken into account other morphological features, such as the presence and position of Landolt' s club, the size of the dendritic field, the presence of an accessory dendritic process, the position of the perikaryon in the INL. The stratification of the axonal ending is demonstrated but cannot be related to the classification based on dendritic morphology that we have chosen.
