Notes: SYNOPSIS. At 850 ppm apholate [2,2,4,4,6,6-hexakis (1-aziridinyl)-2,2,4,4,6,6-hexahydro-1,3,5,2,4,6-triazatriphosphorine], an insect chemosterilant, reduced growth of the marine flagellate Tetraselmis subcordiformis by 50% in 21 days. Mean cell volume more sensitively indicated cellular response at low apholate concentrations than cell number or biomass. Two other aziridinyl chemosterilants tested were 12 and 120 X more toxic than apholate—values agreeing with those reported for some estuarine animals. Apholate acted directly upon the organisms rather than indirectly on the experimental medium since comparatively small molar additions of orotic acid, adenine, guanine, and thymine to apholate-poisoned cultures annulled the growth inhibition. Determining the mode of action of aziridinyl chemosterilants by activity annulment is discussed.

Notes: Summary Small bowel absorption of glucose and leucin was investigated under the influence of somatostatin (SST) using an isolated Thiry Vella loop in the unrestrained dog. SST infusion significantly reduced glucose and leucin absorption, inhibiting glucose absorption more than that of leucin.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The authors have investigated whether air, accumulating over the cerebral cortex during encephalography, leads not merely to a separation by gravity of the cortex from skull vault but whether deeper structures in the region of the Pallidum could also be displaced. In 14 radiographs, in which during pneumoencephalography in the sitting position there was no, or only a very slight, parietal collection of air but in later films taken in the supine position a definite frontal collection of air was seen, a displacement of the deep brain structures by gravity apparently occurred. The displacements by gravity of the chosen fixed points—the calcified pineal or the calcified habenular commissure—amounted to 2.48±±1.08 mm on average when the superficial collection of air measured 7.4±±2.15 mm in thickness. A series of 50 parkinsonian patients without cortical air collection were compared with 19 patients with a definite air cap during operations for Pallidotomy. In these patients it could be recognised that there was a statistically highly significant mean displacement of the target point by 2.7 mm in the direction of the penetrating zone of the coagulating electrode and corresponding to gravity. The evidence was derived from somatotopic organisation of the pallidum. The investigations showed that for the exact localisation of the target point one had to consider and make allowances for superficial air collections—which occurred in about 14% of our total series- and the consequential displacement of the deep brain structures.

Notes: Summary The influence of somatostatin on tumor cell growth was studied in vivo in mice (sarcoma 180 ascites tumor and Lewis lung tumor) and in vitro on nontransformed and polyoma-transformed cell lines. 4 or 20 μg/100 g of cyclic somatostatin and 4 μg/100 g of linear protamin Zn-bound somatostatin were injected s.c. twice daily in the in vivo study. Cyclic somatostatin (1, 4 or 10 μg/ml) was added twice daily to the cell cultures. Somatostatin administration influenced neither the survival of animals nor the growth rate of cultured cell lines. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A2025117 00011
