    Notes: Abstract Changes in cell volume and solute content upon hyperosmotic shock have been studied for six unicellular blue-green algae (cyanobacteria): Synechococcus PCC 6301, PCC 6311; Synechocystis PCC 6702, PCC 6714, PCC 6803 and PCC 7008. The extent of change in volume was shown to be dependent upon the solute used to establish the osmotic gradient, with cells in NaCl showing a reduced shrinkage when compared to cells in media containing added sorbitol and sucrose. Uptake of extracellular solutes during hyperosmotic shock was observed in Synechocystis PCC 6714, with maximum accumulation of external solutes in NaCl and minimum solute uptake in sucrose solutions. Conversely, solute loss from the cells (K+ and amino acids) was greatest in sucrose-containing media and least in NaCl. The results show that these blue-green algae do not behave as ‘ideal osmometers’ in media of high osmotic strength. It is proposed that short-term changes in plasmalemma permeability in these organisms may be due to transient membrane instability resulting from osmotic imbalance between the cell and its surrounding fluid at the onset of hyperosmotic shock.

    Notes: Abstract The algorithm for Hamiltonian transformation in the quadratic perturbation technique of one of the authors admits of various equivalent forms. Using as a criterion the number of inter-term multiplications required for transformation, however, the amount of effort required to obtain the transformed Hamiltonian is not equivalent among these forms. Each is considered in some detail, and general guidelines for the choice of ‘most efficient’ algorithm to be used in a given problem are provided. Their utility is demonstrated by application to Duffing's equation.

    Notes: Abstract The motion of two massive particles is considered within the framework of the first post-Newtonian approximation. The system Hamiltonian is constructed and normalized through first order using a canonical transformation method of implicit variables. Closed-form solutions for the Delaunay elements in the phase space are obtained. The bridge between the phase space and the state space of the Lagrangian of the motion is provided by a velocity-dependent Legendre transformation. By explicit inversion of this transformation, expressions for the Keplerian elements in the state space are obtained from the Delaunay element solutions.

    Notes: Abstract A complete analytical dynamic theory for the motion of Nereid has been constructed, accurate to approximately 0.01 arc second over several hundred years. The solution uses the Lie transform approach advanced by Deprit and is consistent with respect to the magnitudes of the disturbing functions, including all perturbations to an accuracy of 10−8 relative to the two-body potential (oblateness and third-body). Multiple short-period variables in the third-body perturbations are related via the ratio of their mean motions, reducing the number of independent variables. Extensive use is made of expansions giving trigonometric functions of the true anomaly as analytical Fourier series in the mean anomaly. Initial constants and mass parameters come from the data obtained during the Voyager II encounter with Neptune in 1989.

    Notes: Summary Reducing sugar and sucrose contents of potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L.) from six cultivars were monitored both during the growing season and after a four months storage period at 10°C. Significant correlations were found between tuber sugar contents (sucrose, reducing and total) measured at harvest and the reducing sugar content after storage. Similarly, in five of the six cultivars, the sucrose loss and the corresponding reducing sugar gain during storage were significantly correlated.

Record) grown in Tayside (northern United Kingdom (UK)) and Lincolnshire (southern UK) were monitored during the 1984 growing season and after two months storage at 10°C. Neither latitude nor agronomic factors were shown to affect sugar content. Significant correlations were found between the post storage reducing sugar content and the sugar contents measured at harvest. Regression analyses indicated that in immature tubers sucrose breakdown was responsible for reducing sugar accumulation during storage.

    Notes: Summary Photosynthetic, prokaryotic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) occur in a wide range of natural habitats of diverse ionic composition and as such, represent an important source of biological material for biosolar energy conversion programs using saline water. The gasvacuolate, filamentous Spirulina is grown in ‘seminatural’ culture in Lake Texcoco, Mexico, as a major source of single-cell protein for animal nutrition. Pilot-scale trials in other areas of the world have also demonstrated the suitability of blue-green algae, including Spirulina, for growth under brackish conditions. The carbohydrate accumulation profiles of blue-green algae differ in isolates from freshwater, marine and hypersaline habitats, with a trend towards sucrose or trehalose accumulation in stenohaline freshwater strains grown in media containing NaCl, while euryhaline and marine forms frequently accumulate glucosylglycerol. Many halotolerant isolates from hypersaline habitats accumulate glycinebetaine in response to osmotic stress. This knowledge may provide scope for future improvement in the N2 fixation rates of blue-green algae in saline media, using betaine-accumulating N2-fixing strains in preference to other, saltsensitive isolates.
