Notes: : Total elimination of oxygen (O2) in modified atmosphere packaging of bakery products is difficult to achieve. Because of the typical porous texture of the packaging, air can be retained inside. The effect of O2 absorbers alone or in combination with modified atmosphere on Eurotium amstelodami, E. herbariorum, E. repens, and E. rubrum growth was investigated. Cakes of 0.80 to 0.90 water activity (aw) were packaged with different atmospheres (air, 100% N2; 70% N2:30% CO2) and O2 absorbers of 2 different absorption capacities. The use of absorbers with a suitable absorption capacity led to a significant increase of cakes with mold-free shelf life, regardless of aw and pH level, at 25 °C.

Notes: Abstract To evaluate the rate at which the four main aflatoxins (aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2) are able to cross the luminal membrane of the rat small intestine, a study about intestinal absorption kinetics of these mycotoxins has been made. In situ results obtained showed that the absorption of aflatoxins in rat small intestine is a very fast process that follows first-order kinetics, with an absorption rate constant (k a ) of 5.84±0.05 (aflatoxin B1), 4.06±0.09 (aflatoxin B2), 2.09±0.03 (aflatoxin G1) and 1.58±0.04 (aflatoxin G2) h−1, respectively.

Notes: Abstract A high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method to determine zearalenone in corn contaminated withFusarium graminearum is described. After extraction with methanol-water and solvent partition, samples were cleaned up by applying the extract to a disposable silica cartridge and by eluting the toxin with a mixture of hexane/dry ethyl ether (5/5). Separation was achieved by a reverse phase μBondapak C18 column followed by fluorescence detection using an excitation wavelength at 274 nm and an emission wavelength at 440 nm. Detection limit was about 5 ng. Recoveries ranging from 85.37 to 100.97%, in standard solutions range 30–0.5 µg/ml, were found.

Notes: Abstract The most important proteins in animal blood as haemoglobin, bovine serum albumin and γ-globuline were filtered in experimental UF membranes. The membranes were prepared in our laboratory by the traditional phase inversion process using as polymer a new polyamide. These membranes were characterized by measuring their initial water fluxes, and after that the protein solutions were ultrafiltered. The flux decline and membrane fouling were studied in order to obtain the best operating conditions for a future pilot plant scale application.
