    Notes: The subventricular zone of the adult mammalian forebrain contains progenitor cells that, by migrating along a restricted pathway called the ‘rostral migratory stream' (RMS), add new neurons to the olfactory bulb throughout life. To determine the influence of the olfactory bulb on the development of these progenitor cells, we performed lesions that interrupt this pathway and separate the olfactory bulb from the rest of the forebrain. By labelling cells born at several survival times after the lesions with the thymidine analogue bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), we found that disconnection from the bulb influences the rate of BrdU incorporation by the progenitor cells. The number of labelled cells in lesioned mice was almost half that found in control mice. In the disconnected migratory pathway, the number of neurons expressing calretinin was increased indicating that neuronal differentiation was enhanced: newly born neurons occurred within and around the RMS, most of them expressed calretinin and left the pathway starting about 2 weeks after the lesion. Thereafter, these neurons preserving their phenotype, spread for long distances, and accumulated ectopically in dorsal regions of the anterior olfactory nucleus and the frontal cortex. Finally, transplantation of adult subventricular cells into the lesioned pathway showed that the lesion neither prevents neuronal migration nor alters its direction. Thus, although the olfactory bulb appears to regulate the pace of the developmental processes, its disconnection does not prevent the proliferation, migration and phenotypic acquisition of newly generated bulbar interneurons that, since they cannot reach their terminal domains, populate some precise regions of the lesioned adult forebrain.

    Notes: Shrimp aquaculture produces a large amount of waste, including nitrogen and phosphorus. To investigate the utilization of those elements as sources of nutrients for the growth of the red seaweed, Gracilaria sp. J. Agardh, an experiment in shrimp pond effluents was carried out over a period of 5 months. The biomass varied significantly (P 〈 0.01), reaching a maximum of 2540 g m−2 and a minimum of 380 g m−2. The mean was 1418 ± 708 g m−2. The higher biomass values occurred during the first 15 days and sometimes exceeded the initial inoculum by 190%. According to the results, production of 23.93 t ha−1 year−1 (dry weight) can be expected. anova showed significant differences in RGR (relative growth rate) values (P 〈 0.05). RGR varied from 8.8% per day to 1.8% per day. The fluctuation of nutrients was mainly influenced by pond fertilization frequency, with NH4 being the most abundant nutrient. Correlations between RGR and environmental parameters during the study period were not significant (P 〉 0.05). We conclude that Gracilaria sp. can be cultivated in shrimp ponds effluents. However, despite this relative success, it is necessary to perform some adjustments regarding the utilized cultivation technique.

    Notes: Abstract Parvalbumin and calbindin D28k immunoreactivities were examined in the neocortex of the rat during postnatal development. Parvalbumin-immunoreactive nonpyramidal neurons first appear in layer V and later in layers VI and IV, and then in II and III. Immunoreactive terminals forming baskets surrounding unlabelled somata appear about 2 days later. The first parvalbumin-immunoreactive neurons appear in the retrosplenial and cingulate cortices, and the rostral region of the primary somatosensory cortex at postnatal days 8 or 9 (P8–P9). These regions are followed by the primary visual, primary auditory and motor cortices at P11. Parvalbumin immunoreactivity appears last in the secondary areas of the sensory regions and association cortices. Adult patterns are reached at the end of the 3rd week. Calbindin D28K-immunoreactive nonpyramidal neurons are found at birth in all cortical layers excepting the molecular layer. The intensity of the immunoreaction increases during the first 8 or 11 days of postnatal life, first in the inner and later in the upper cortical layers, following, therefore, an “inside-out” gradient. Heavily-labelled calbindin D28K-immunoreactive nonpyramidal cells dramatically decrease in number from P11 to P15 due mainly to a decrease of the multipolar subtypes. This suggests that two populations of calbindin D28k-immunoreactive nonpyramidal neurons are produced in the neocortex during postnatal development: one population of neurons transitorily expresses calbindin D28k immunoreactivity; the other population is composed of neurons that are permanently calbindin D28k immunoreactive. In addition to heavily labelled nonpyramidal cells, a band of weakly labelled pyramid-like neurons progressively appears in layers II and III throughout the cerebral cortex, beginning in layer IV in the somatosensory cortex by the end of the 2st week. Adult patterns are reached at the end of the 3rd week. These results indicate that parvalbumin and calbindin D28k immunoreactivities in the cerebral neocortx follow different characteristic patterns during postnatal development. The appearance of parvalbumin immunoreactivity correlates with the appearance of the related functional activity in the different cortical regions, and, probably, with the appearance of inhibitory activity in the neocortex. On the other hand, the early appearance of calbindin D28k immunoreactivity in the neocortex may be related to the early appearance of calbindin immunoreactivity in many other brain regions, and suggests another, as yet unknown, role for this calcium-binding protein during development of the cerebral cortex.

    Notes: Summary The whisker-to-barrel pathway of the adult mouse was used in a study on the effects of peripheral sensory deprivation on GAD-immunoreactivity in the somatosensory cortex. At varying periods of time after removal of a set of vibrissal follicles, mice were processed for immunohistochemistry using an antibody against GAD. In sections tangential to the cortical surface we observed, in the barrels whose follicles were removed, decreased immunoreactivity as early as three days after surgery. The decrease was due to a lesser numerical density of stained puncta and to less intense staining of those remaining. GAD-positive somata were also less intensely stained, whereas their number did not seem to be changed. The changes, apparent at 3 days after the surgery, were restricted to the barrels corresponding to the removed follicles and were maximal at 2–4 weeks. At longer survival times (until 7 months) the immunoreactivity returned to normal, coincident with the regeneration of peripheral nerve fibres in the absence of their follicles. We conclude that GAD-immunoreactivity in the barrel cortex swiftly reacts to modifications of neuronal activity evoked in the periphery.

    Notes: Summary Sensory experience during perinatal life and adulthood modifies physiological and anatomical characteristics of the central nervous system. So far, this phenomenon has been studied in situations of complete or partial sensory deprivation. We here report that increased sensory stimulation, during four days, of a number of whisker follicles on the face of the adult mouse results in an increased immunoreactivity of glutamic acid decarboxylase (the biosynthetic enzyme of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA) in the somatosensory cortex of the adult mouse. Effects were limited to a column of tissue corresponding to the representation of the stimulated follicles and lasted two days beyond stimulation. These findings suggest that sensory stimulation transiently modifies local cortical processing.

    Notes: Abstract Zinc and copper levels in the gills, kidney and intestine of the dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula L. collected in a 80 to 120 m deep zone close to Barcelona (Spain) during the months of February–March 1981 were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after subacute (10 ppm Zn for 3 wk) and acute (80 ppm Zn for 24 h) treatment with ZnSO4. Individuals exposed to 80 ppm Zn accumulated Zn in the gills, whereas no significant increase in Zn content was found in the kidney or intestine. No differences in the Cu content of any of these tissues were found. Dogfish exposed to 10 ppm Zn for 3 wk displayed an increase in Zn content of the gills, kidney and intestine. An increase in the Cu concentration of the gills was also recorded which may suggest that Cu, and hence Zn and other heavy metals, are excreted via the gills when the kidney and intestine are overloaded. A light-microscopic study of the gill epithelium was carried out on dogfish treated with 10 ppm Zn for 3 wk, 80 ppm Zn for 24 h and 175 ppm Zn for 14 h, and chloride cell response was quantified. Chloride cells increased in number after each treatment, even appearing in the secondary lamellae following treatment with 175 ppm Zn. It is suggested that the chloride cell may excrete bivalent ions when dogfish are exposed to an excess of bivalent salts.

    Notes: Abstract The most important proteins in animal blood as haemoglobin, bovine serum albumin and γ-globuline were filtered in experimental UF membranes. The membranes were prepared in our laboratory by the traditional phase inversion process using as polymer a new polyamide. These membranes were characterized by measuring their initial water fluxes, and after that the protein solutions were ultrafiltered. The flux decline and membrane fouling were studied in order to obtain the best operating conditions for a future pilot plant scale application.

    Notes: Abstract There is no indigenous mosquito-borne transmission of malaria in Kuwait. However, in a five year period at a district general hospital, the number of laboratory-diagnosed cases of malaria increased annually from 25 to 84, a rise of 336%. Except for two induced infections, all were imported, mainly from the Indian subcontinent. Plasmodium vivax was responsible for 87.29% of the cases; P. falciparum (12.05%), a mixed infection of P. vivax and P. falciparum (0.33%) and a case of P. ovale (0.33%) were also identified. Rapid preparation of acetone-fixed, Giemsa-stained thick blood films, a heightened awareness of the infection, examination of multiple samples of blood from patients and the general resurgence of malaria in endemic areas were some of the factors responsible for the high number of cases diagnosed. Most patients were young males and presented with clinical malaria due to P. vivax between May and October each year, an apparent seasonal peak. However, many were already resident in the country for a variable period. Patients with P. falciparum though, presented clinically within two weeks of arrival in the country. Parasite densities were calculated to monitor the progress of treatment and identify quickly any possible chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum strains. A policy of active prophylaxis is suggested to stem the tide of imported malaria.
