    Notes: Abstract Calcium carbonate precipitation by 63 strains of moderately halophilic bacteria (Vibrio spp.) isolated from water of a saltern pond has been studied, taking into account the influence of salinity and temperature on the quantity and type of crystals precipitated. The bacteria formed crystals under all the conditions tested. All the crystals were magnesium calcite, with a variable Mg content, depending upon the medium provided. No aragonite was detected, even in a media with high Mg contents. Whether these microorganisms play an active role in precipitation is discussed, as well as the possibility that they may contribute to CaCO3 precipatation in their natural habitats.

    Notes: We investigated the precipitation of carbonates by Halobacillus trueperi in both solid and liquid media at different salt concentrations and different magnesium/calcium ratios. H. trueperi precipitated at all assayed salt concentrations. When salt concentration increased, the quantity and the size of bioliths decreased and the time required increased. The precipitated minerals (determined by X-ray diffraction) were calcite, magnesium calcite and monohydrocalcite in variable proportions depending on the salinity and the physical state of the medium; the magnesium content of the magnesium calcites also varied with regard to the culture type. According to the saturation indices other minerals could also precipitate. Scanning electron microscopy showed that dominant morphologies of the bioliths were spherulitic with fibrous radiated interiors. We show that H. trueperi plays an active role in the precipitation of carbonates and we hypothesize about this process of biomineralization.

    Notes: Abstract Using high performance liquid chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, the compatible solutes of some moderately halophilic bacteria were studied. The following accepted species of moderately halophilic bacteria were included: Volcaniella eurihalina and Deleya salina among Gram-negative rods, and Salinicoccus roseus and Salinicoccus hispanicus among Gram-positive cocci. Besides these strains we have also screened other new isolates, including Marinomonas species and Gram-positive cocci and rods. The tetrahydropyrimidine carboxylic acid ‘ectoine’ was found to be the main compatible solute in the Gram-negative strains tested when these were grown in glucose-mineral medium. In addition, betaine was accumulated from complex media containing yeast extract. Among the Gram-positive strains investigated, the solutes proline (bacillus 30, Salinicoccus) and hydroxyectoine (coccus 28) also played an important role, while alanine, glucose, glutamate, glutamine and trehalose occurred as minor components. We also detected two recently described compatible solutes: Nδ-acetylornithine and a homologous compound, Nε-acetyllysine. Representatives of distinct phenotypic groups of Gram-positive cocci and rods were clearly distinguished by their solute pattern.

    Notes: Abstract Carbonate crystal formation by 48 strains of moderately halophilic microorganisms currently assigned to the genusFlavobacterium andAcinetobacter has been investigated. Strains were grown at different salt concentrations (2.5%, 7.5%, and 20%, wt/vol, total salts) and temperatures (22°C and 32°C). All the strains tested were capable of precipitating calcium carbonate as calcite, but onlyAcinetobacter strains formed aragonite. High temperature and low ionic strength of medium favored crystal formation. The influence of species specificity on the type of crystal precipitated by moderately halophilic microorganisms and their possible role in active precipitation in nature are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Twelve strains ofYersinia enterocolitica were examined for their ability to bind spontaneously to murine leukocytes. Each of eight HeLa cell invasive strains exhibited nonselective binding to peritoneal leukocytes, lymph node leukocytes, and thymocytes, whereas four noninvasive strains lacked binding properties. Like the HeLa cell invasion, the binding ofY. enterocolitica to leukocytes was much less efficient for bacteria grown at 37°C than for bacteria grown at 22°C. The binding properties were not influenced by the virulence plasmid that codes for Vwa+ phenotype. This leukocyte binding test is proposed as a simple assay for invasive properties ofY. enterocolitica.

    Notes: Abstract The cellular fatty acid composition ofPlanococcus halophilus NRCC 14033 grown at different temperatures and salt concentrations was studied. Increase of the temperature or salt concentration in the growth medium resulted in an increase of saturated fatty acid content with a concomitant decrease of branched-chain acids. This result suggested, for this bacterium, phenotypic adaptation to changes in both temperature and salt concentration in the natural environment.

    Notes: Abstract The fatty acid composition of five strains ofCorallococcus coralloides and three reference species ofMyxococcus were determined by gas-liquid chromatography. Methyl esters of fatty acid containing from 12 to 22 carbon atoms were identified. The major fatty acids present were C15 and C17 saturated branched chain, and both C16 saturated and unsaturated straight chain acids. The C17 saturated branched and straight chain acids, which were in valuable concentration in species ofMyxococcus, were not, however, detected in all strains ofC. coralloides. The application of these results in the distinction ofC. coralloides from the genusMyxococcus is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Struvite precipitation by 161 bacterial strains isolated from soil and fresh water was analyzed. The results showed that the ability to form struvite is not widespread among these bacteria. Struvite precipitation was influenced by environmental factors and could be enhanced by changing the experimental conditions. There was no clear relationship between the taxonomic status of a given strain and its ability to precipitate struvite. However, bacteria of the genusPseudomonas showed a greater tendency to precipitate struvite than organisms of the remaining genera studied, and five new genera were identified as struvite producers.

    Notes: Abstract Vegetative cells as well myxospores ofMyxococcus xanthus have shown anticomplementary activity and the capacity to be used as active agents in the skin preparation of the Shwartzman reaction and in its intravenous induction. These endotoxin-like properties were not extractable by the hot phenol-water methods. Our results suggest the presence of a lipid A analog in both vegetative cells and myxospores, and emphasize the difficulty of lipopolysaccharide detection; this is perhaps a consequence of a developing associated change in polysaccharide moiety of the myxobacterial lipopolysaccharides; this may be the basis of the special immunomodulation pattern shown byM. xanthus myxospores.

    Notes: Abstract Growth characteristics ofDeleya halophila (CCM 3662T), were determined using a defined medium.Deleya halophila presented its optimal growth at 7.5% (wt/vol) total salts when it was grwon at incubation temperatures of 32° and 42°C; when the temperature was lowered to 22°C, it had optimal growth at 5% (wt/vol) total salts. This bacterium had an absolute requirement for the Na+ cation; it could not be replaced by other cations. NaBr, Na2SO4, or Na2S2O3 could be substituted for NaCl in the growth medium, but, when MgCl2, KCl, LiCl, NaI, NaF, or NaNO3 was substituted for NaCl, the medium did not support growth. Growth rates of the strain were diverse when NaCl was partially replaced by other sodium salts. Finally,D. halophila suffered loss of viability when the culture was diluted into different low NaCl concentrations (0, 0.5%, and 1%, wt/vol) at various incubation temperatures.
