    Notes: Two possible types of cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanostructures can be formed within Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of calixarene Cd salt as a result of exposure to H2S gas: nanoclusters with the size of about 1.5 nm or two-dimensional planes with the thickness of about 1.7 nm. Transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction studies on calixarene/CdS LB films show that CdS particles are not present in the fresh samples at the beginning, but they are gradually formed under exposure to a high energy electron beam. A blueshift of the first exciton absorption band and an increase of the extinction coefficient, caused by exposure to H2S gas, were found with UV-visible optical spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract— 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1Acute morphine treatment of rats increased the concentration of neuro-secretory material in the posterior pituitary. These changes were accompanied by the presence of more neurosecretory materials in the axons of the hypothalamic supraoptic and paraventricular neurons and in the hypothalamic capillaries and sinuses. In the perikarya of the hypothalamic supraoptic and paraventricular neurons, the neurosecretory material is in a dispersed state.2Following chronic morphine treatment, neurosecretory material was almost absent from the posterior pituitary, whereas in the perikarya of the supraoptic and paraventricular neurons, congestion of neurosecretory material is observed which is accompanied by the absence of the neurosecretory material from the axons arising from the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei and from the hypothalamic capillaries and sinuses.3During nalorphine-induced abstinence, there was sudden reappearance of the neurosecretory material in the posterior pituitary along with the appearance of neurosecretory material in the hypothalamic neurosecretory neuronal tracts, blood capillaries and sinuses together with the dispersion of the neurosecretory materials from the hypothalamic neurosecretory neurons.

    Notes: Abstract— (1) Acute morphine treatment of rats reduced the total catecholamine content as well as the noradrenaline content of the adrenal gland. This was accompanied by increased ATPase activity and increased calcium content of the medullary cells.(2) After chronic morphine treatment, the total catecholamine content remained more or less unaltered, but the noradrenaline content was markedly increased together with the noradrenaline-containing areas, in comparison with what was observed in control animals. The ATPase activity of the medullary cells was found to be diminished along with the decreased calcium content.(3) In nalorphine-induced abstinence, a decrease in total catecholamine content together with a reduction of noradrenaline content and of noradrenaline-containing areas were observed. ATPase activity was also found to be increased with increased calcium content.

    Notes: The current transport mechanism through porous silicon (PS) films fabricated from 8 to 12 Ω cm p-type silicon (p-Si) substrates has been investigated using current–voltage I(V) measurements on metal/PS/p-Si/metal devices in the temperature range of 77–300 K. The characteristics for all devices show a rectifying behavior with ideality factor very close to unity. A value of 0.7 eV is obtained for the barrier height at the interface between PS and bulk p-Si at room temperature and the barrier height is found to increase with rising temperature. A band model is proposed in order to explain the observed characteristics. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Chemisorption properties of atomic Cs on the Ga-rich GaAs (100) (2×1), (2×2), and β(4×2) surfaces are investigated using ab initio self-consistent restricted open shell Hartree–Fock total energy calculations with Hay–Wadt effective core potentials. The effects of electron correlation have been included using many-body perturbation theory through second order, with the exception of β(4×2) symmetry, due to computational limitations. The semiconductor surface is modeled by finite sized hydrogen saturated clusters. The effects of surface relaxation and reconstruction have been investigated in detail. We report on the energetics of chemisorption, charge population analysis, highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps, and consequent possibilities of metallization. The most stable chemisorbed site is found to be the trough site for the Ga9As9H25 cluster, with the adatom at a distance of 3.796 Å from the surface at the MP2 level. The highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap, in this case is reduced by 0.724 eV due to Cs adsorption. At the Hartree–Fock level, the most stable chemisorbed site is also the trough site for the Ga19As15H39 cluster, with a reduction in the gap of 1.403 eV. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: All electron density functional theory with gradient corrections to the exchange and correlation functionals has been used to investigate the properties of small neutral and cationic vanadium clusters. The energetically favorable structures of vanadium clusters are found to be those with maximized average coordinations. The binding energy is found to increase monotonically with the number of atoms in the cluster and it is predicted that a significantly large number of atoms is needed to reproduce the bulk cohesive energy. Except for the neutral vanadium tetramer, the preferred decay channels for all the neutral and cationic clusters contain the vanadium atom. The average magnetic moment per atom is found to oscillate with cluster size, with an upper bound of 0.33 μB in the range from V4 to V9. Results have been compared, in detail, with available experimental and theoretical data. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A general analysis of nucleation in a vapor phase containing two components that are partially miscible in the liquid state is presented. The analysis has been applied to three systems: diethylene glycol+n-heptane, methanol+cyclohexane and diethylene glycol+benzene. On the basis of the classical nucleation theory, the results indicate that a range of saturation ratios, depending on the degree of miscibility, leads to the formation of two types of critical nuclei differing in size and composition. The likelihood of formation of two types of critical nuclei increases as the miscibility gap of the system increases. In some situations, both kinds of nuclei can have the same free energy of formation, and can nucleate at the same rate.
