Notes: Abstract  Education and quality assurance (QA) in breast screening pathology have been encouraged by the Europe Against Cancer programme. As a prerequisite for the set-up of a QA programme in Belgium and in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, an inquiry was initiated to evaluate the daily practise in breast pathology, the modalities in handling and analysing breast specimens and the willingness of the pathologists to participate in a QA scheme. Of the 278 mailed questionnaires, 109 confidential and valid questionnaires were returned, meaning a participation rate of 40%. All 109 respondents indicated their willingness to voluntarily participate in the further QA programme. Segmental resections for conservative surgery and excision biopsies ranked first and second, respectively, in examination requests. Of the respondents, 50% complained about the lack of clinical information on the pathology request form. A multidisciplinary team approach for the diagnosis of screen-detected lesions was deemed desirable by 87% of the respondents, but only 16% of them actually participate in such pre-operative meetings. Even more puzzling is that 75% of the respondents report regular unavailability of the control radiogram of the surgical specimen removed for non-palpable lesions. One-quarter to one-third of the pathologists still regularly perform frozen sections on microcalcifications or tumours smaller than 1 cm. However, 81% of the respondents estimate that pre-operative diagnosis is not appropriate for this type of lesion. The results of this inquiry show that the guidelines for the diagnosis of screen-detected breast lesions are not yet fully applied in daily practise. The development of local comprehensive breast teams involving a pathologist should improve the co-ordination between the medical disciplines, represent an important way of disseminating the guidelines on breast screening pathology and stimulate the relay unit to conduct QA programmes.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To study the relationship between the plasma concentration of stiripentol (STP), a new antiepileptic drug, and its inhibitory effect on the formation of carbamazepine epoxide (CBZE) in epileptic children treated with carbamazepine (CBZ) either alone or in combination with another antiepileptic drug. Methods: Minimum plasma concentration of antiepileptic drugs was measured before initiation of STP therapy (day 0) and on days 28 (STP 60 mg⋅kg−1⋅day−1) and 84 (STP 90 mg⋅kg−1⋅day−1) by HPLC. Results: The CBZE/CBZ plasma concentration ratio decreased exponentially with increasing minimum plasma STP concentration (r = 0.80). The asymptote of the curve allowed the calculation of the minimum plasma STP concentration required to obtain the maximum inhibitory effect, i.e. 6.7 mg⋅l−1. Conclusion: The inhibitory effect of STP on CBZ metabolism expressed as the CBZE/CBZ plasma concentration ratio is dependent on STP plasma concentration, with a maximum effect at an average of 7 mg⋅l−1. The present data suggest that in order to evaluate the anticonvulsant efficacy of STP as add-on therapy, the minimum plasma STP concentration should be maintained above 7 mg⋅l−1 and the dosage of CBZ should simultaneously be decreased in steps by more than 50% to minimize the change in CBZ plasma concentration.

Notes: Abstract We review the information that is already provided and will be soon provided on the parameters of a new neutral boson of general nature from LEP and SLC experiments. We develop a strategy that associates the general independent lepton and quarkZ′ couplings to precisely defined experiments. For the specific case of particular popular models (E 6, left-right symmetry, compositeZ) that we have analyzed, we predict, in case of negative searches, bounds of typical order one percent for theZ′ mixing angle and one TeV for theZ′ mass, at the end of the various experimental phases.

Notes: Abstract Using the general assumptions of analyticity, unitarity and the low energy theorem, we establish a rigorous upper bound on the contribution of theS-waveWW scattering amplitude to the electroweak rho parameter. It ranges from 0.0085 to 0.0031 when the scale of the strongWW interactions varies from threshold to its limiting value of 0.72 TeV. Adding the constraint of positivity of the Imaginary part leads to an almost constant bound (0.0032–0.0031). Explicit examples show that these bounds are almost optimal.

Notes: Abstracts We show how these reactions are sensitive to the 3-boson and 4-boson couplings predicted by the SU(2)×U(1) gauge theory. We compute the complete amplitudes appearing at ordere 3 for the 1st reaction and the quasi-real γγ→W + W − amplitudes for the 2nd one. Numerical results are given in the range of energy expected for the LEP machine.

Notes: Abstract. We examine the possibility that SUSY particles are light, i.e. have a mass just beyond the final kinematical reach of LEP2. In this case, even if light particles are not directly detected, their virtual effects are enhanced by a “close-to-threshold” resonance in the s-channel. We find that this resonant effect is absent in the case of light sfermions, while it is enhanced in the case of light gauginos, since neutralinos and charginos add coherently in some regions of the allowed parameter space. We discuss this “virtual alliance” in detail and try to examine the possibilities of its experimental verification.

Notes: Abstract The physical interest ofγe ± collisions is examined. A basic formalism is established. Crosssections are computed with general couplings and polarization states. Illustrations are given for QED tests, Z0 andW ± production, various electro-weak processes including γγ collisions and the search for new currents and particles.

Notes: Abstract We review, update and propose tests of a possible substructure of leptons, quarks andW ±,Z bosons for the next generation ofe + e − colliders. We successively consider the three following domains of physics: at theZ peak, out of theZ peak and in the high energy range.

Notes: Abstract Using the propagator formalism we establish more precisely the effects of fermion loops on the boson mass ratioM W 2 /M Z 2 cos2 θ and on the energy dependence of the form factors associated to time-like or space-likeW, Z and γ exchanges. We calculate the corrections due to higher doublets of quarks including vector meson formation and to higher doublets of leptons for example a large number of neutrino types.
