Notes: Summary After water loading, rats bearing ocular grafts of the pars intermedia of the pituitary showed that the content of sodium increased in urine, whereas potassium excretion and diuresis did not vary significatively. These results suggest that in the rat the pars intermedia is involved in the regulation of the electrolyte metabolism.

Notes: Abstract Bone cements are mainly based on acrylie polymers, poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) being the most representative. The curing process (cold curing) is the result of the free radical polymerization of a mixture of beads of PMMA and methyl methacrylate (MMA), initiated by benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and activated by the presence of a tertiary amine, the most classical being N,N-dimethyl-4-toluidine (DMT). In this work the results on the effect of the size and size distribution of PMMA beads and the concentration of DMT and BPO on the setting parameters, the residual monomer content and the mechanical properties (tension and compression) of the cured systems are presented. The use of relatively larger diameter PMMA beads improves the characteristic parameters of the curing process (decreasing the peak temperature and increasing the setting time), without detrimental effects on the mechanical properties of the cured cement.

Notes: Abstract Polymeric drugs and ionomers can exhibit properties associated with the polymeric nature, such as adhesion, or coating of different substrates by polymeric active films, and can be applied successfully in the field of biomaterials. In this sense, complexation with calcium ions of two polyacrylic systems derived from 4-aminosalicylic acid (poly (4-HMA)), and 5-aminosalicylic acid, (poly (5-HMA)), have been studied by Fourier transform–infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Both techniques support the ability of these polymers to form complexes with calcium ions as polycarboxylates.

Notes: With the aim of improving some of the disadvantages of the acrylic bone cements, an acrylic bone cement based on polymethyl methacrylate has been modified by substituting different quantities, up to 20%, of the monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA) with the same amount of ethoxytriethyleneglycol monomethacrylate (TEG). The addition of this new monomer decreased noticeably the maximum temperature and increased both setting and working times. Mechanical testing revealed that the introduction of TEG gave rise to a less fragile bone cement by increasing slightly the total deformation without any change in the rest of the tensile parameters.

Notes: Soluble copolymers of 4-methacryloyloxy-acetanilide (M), an acrylic derivative of paracetamol, with 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate (H) were prepared by free radical polymerization in DMF solution at 50°C, using 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The reactivity ratios of both monomers were determined by the application of conventional linearization methods suggested by Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos. The results obtained make clear that this system copolymerizes at random with the reactivity ratios rm = 2.15 ± 0.05 and rH = 0.90 ± 0.10. The microstructure of copolymer chains is described on the basis of the first order Markov statistics. The copolymer glass transition temperatures were determined calorimetrically and the variation of Tg with the copolymer composition is discussed according to modern methods, considering the sequence distribution of monomeric units along the copolymer chains. Also the Tg of the corresponding homopolymers were determined giving the values of Tg(M) = 471 K and Tg(H) = 358 K.

Notes: Methyl α-p-cyanobenzylacrylate was synthesized from dimethyl malonate following well-known organic reactions. The purified monomer was polymerized by a free-radical mechanism in benzene solution, using AIBN as initiator in the interval 50-90°C. The kinetic results seem to indicate an apparent ceiling temperature near 90°C. The analysis by 13C-NMR of polymers obtained indicates that the macromolecular chains are predominantly syndiotactic and the tacticity is independent of the polymerization temperature in the experimental interval studied. However, the determination of conditional probabilities for iso- and syndiotactic additions and the persistence ratios indicate that the propagation mechanism for the radical polymerization of methyl α-p-cyanobenzylacrylate does not follow a typical Bernoullian statistics.

Notes: Free-radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with methyl α-p-chlorobenzylacrylate and methyl methacrylate with methyl α-p-methoxybenzylacrylate have been studied in benzene solution at 40°C. Although a simple copolymerization model fits the composition data, the kinetic behavior of both copolymerization systems are analyzed from simple and reversible copolymerization models, taking into account the relatively low ceiling temperature of both methyl α-(p-substituted benzyl)acrylates and considering that the overall rate of copolymerization drastically decreases with the increase of the corresponding methyl α-(p-substituted benzyl)acrylate molar fraction in the feed.

Description / Table of Contents: Die radikalische Copolymerisation von Methylmethacrylat (MMA) und Allylmethacrylat (AMA) wurde studiert.
Notes: Radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA)-allyl methacrylate (AMA) in the presence of zinc chloride, using azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator has been carried out. The copolymerization rate increases with the concentration of ZnCl2 and the reactivity ratios are modified by the concentration of ZnCl2 which is explained by the different tendency towards the formation of complexes between MMA and AMA with ZnCl2.

Notes: The NMR spectra of styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymers were found to exhibit a multiplicity in the 2.0-3.6δ region characteristic for methoxy protons. The methoxy pattern is explained by taking into account the degree of shielding of methoxy protons, in relation to both number and configuration of the neighbouring styrene units along the chain. The relative areas of the methoxy peaks are compared with results of the statistical analysis of monomer sequence probabilities.

Notes: The composition and stereochemical configuration of styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymers synthesized by total conversion polymerization have been evaluated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained are discussed and compared with those obtained at low conversion bulk copolymerization. They make it possible to state that the conversion affects to some extent the overall composition of the copolymers and more drastically, the content of tactic sequences in the copolymers.
