    Notes: Abstract An optical method of strain measurement is described which possesses numerous advantages over conventional and holographic interferometry. The method consists of imaging the coherently illuminated object by a lens, and double-exposing a photographic plate in a misfocused image plane before and after deformation of the object. The processed photographic plate or ‘specklegram’ is subsequently Fourier-filtered to provide fringe patterns representing derivatives of surface displacements with respect to any desired direction and with variable and controllable sensitivity.

    Notes: Abstract This paper combines measured isochromatic information, complex stress functions and numerical concepts into a new and effective hybrid method of stress analysis. The technique simultaneously smooths the measured isochromatic data, provides accurate boundary information, and separates the isochromatic information into normal and shear stresses at nonboundary locations. No additional experimental data such as the isoclinics are needed. The technique is illustrated experimentally by application to a tensile plate containing a hole.

    Notes: Abstract Traditional thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) presupposes that the structure being analyzed is cyclically loaded at a constant amplitude and frequency. This approach typically has been used to satisfy the adiabatic reversible assumptions. The authors employ an alternative signal analysis technique that enables one to evaluate the magnitude of the individual components of stress in a component subjected to a loading that is random in both frequency and magnitude. However, the nature of the measured information does not change; i.e., data are inherently noisy, and edge information is unreliable. The latter two aspects have caused many thermoelastic stress analyses to be more qualitative than quantitative. The present paper emphasizes developing the TSA technique into a practical, noncontacting quantitative method for stress analyzing actual engineering structures that are randomly loaded. In particular, ability to determine the individual stresses thermoelastically under random loading is demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract Cubic-spline and discrete-quadratic polynomial techniques are presented for reliably computing up to third-order derivatives of experimental information. The concept is demonstrated by stress analyzing from measured displacements a transversely loaded plate and a beam under four-point bending. The respective displacement fields were recorded using holography and moiré. The accuracy of the employed numerical-differentiation techniques is indicated.

    Notes: Abstract Moiré techniques were developed, adapted and applied to the determination of strain fields in filamentary composite laminates. Conventional techniques, using 1000 line-per-inch (Ipi) arrays bonded or photoprinted onto the specimen, were applied to glass-epoxy and boron-epoxy specimens with holes and cracks. Techniques for tenfold fringe multiplication were also applied to glass-epoxy and boron-epoxy laminates with holes. A reflective surface of glass-like smoothness was produced on the specimen and a 500 dot-per-inch grid photoprinted on it. A rigid distortion-free camera was used for recording replicas of the specimen grid by projection photography. These replicas were analyzed with a 200 line-per-millimeter (5080 Ipi) grating for reconstruction of moiré-fringe patterns. These patterns were analyzed by graphical and mechanical differentiation using second-order moiré. Strain distributions and strain-concentration factors were in very good agreement with theoretical and other experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract Strain distributions to failure, tensile and compressive strain-concentration factors, and strength-reduction factors were determined for glass-, boron-, and graphite-epoxy plates with holes loaded in tension. Strain gages, photoelastic coatings and moiré techniques were used. Ten variations of layup and stacking sequence were studied. The boron-epoxy composite was found to be the stiffest and strongest of the three. The graphite laminate with the highest stress concentration and the most linear strain response exhibited the highest strength-reduction factor. In all cases, the maximum strain at failure on the hole boundary was higher than the ultimate tensile-coupon strain. In general, it was found that, the higher the stress-concentration factor, the higher the strength-reduction factor. Thus, the [0/90/0/90]s layup with a stress-concentration factor of 4.82 had a strength-reduction factor of 3.18. At the other extreme, the most flexible layup [±45/±45]s with the lowest stress-concentration factor of 2.06 had the lowest strength-reduction factor of 1.10. Stacking sequences associated with the tensile interlaminar normal stress or high interlaminar shear stress near the boundary, resulted in laminates 10 to 20 percent weaker than corresponding alternate stacking sequences. Furthermore, it was found that stacking-sequence variations can alter the mode of failure from catastrophic to noncatastrophic.

    Notes: Abstract The temperature variation in a cyclically loaded orthotropic composite is proportional to a linear combination of the changes in the normal stresses in the directions of material symmetry. An effective method is presented here to determine the individual stresses from measured thermoelastic data in a region adjacent to an arbitrarily shaped fraction-free boundary of loaded orthotropic composites. The method, which is based on equilibrium and compatibility, uses complex-variable formulations involving conformal mappings, analytic continuation and numerical techniques.

    Notes: Abstract A hybrid experimental-numerical method is presented for evaluating the stresses around holes or notches in orthotropic composites. Moiré-measured displacements and hybrid finite elements are employed. The geometric discontinuity of interest is surrounded by a hybrid element, which is a subregion within the physical structure. Measured displacements provide input information at nodal locations on the external boundary of the hybrid element. Little experimental data are needed, and the approach is accurate and effective. The method is demonstrated for a uniaxially loaded orthotropic laminate containing a central circular hole.
