    Notes: The development of beech leaves (Fagus sylvatica L.) was characterized by determination of the pigment and electrolyte concentrations as well as the accumulation of dry mass and specific leaf mass from bud break to senescence. To test the hypothesis that stress tolerance and responsiveness of defences show developmental and/or seasonal changes, leaf discs were either incubated in the absence (control) or presence of paraquat to induce oxidative stress. Controls displayed developmental changes in stress susceptibility ranging from less than 15% of maximum electrolyte leakage in mature leaves to more than 20% leakage in senescent and 36–46% in immature leaves. Paraquat concentrations were chosen to result in about 95% of maximum electrolyte conductivity within 24 h in all developmental stages. Paraquat accumulation was about two-fold lower in senescent as compared with immature leaves, whereas stress susceptibility, as characterized by the kinetics of the increase in relative leakage, was similar in these developmental stages with 50% of maximum electrolyte conductivity (EC50) = 6·5 h in immature and 7·5 h in senescent leaves. In mature leaves with intermediate paraquat accumulation rates, two classes of stress-sensitivity were distinguished, namely stress-resistant and stress-susceptible leaves with EC50= 9·5 and 5·2 h, respectively. Stress-resistance of mature leaves was accompanied by a rapid, approximately two-fold induction of superoxide dismutase activity. Stress-sensitive mature leaves initially contained high superoxide dismutase activities but showed a rapid, more than six- fold loss in activity in 24 h. Correlation of meteorological data with leakage rates suggested that high air temperatures and low precipitation might have been predisposing for loss of resistance against oxidative stress in beech leaves.

    Notes: Abstract  A 24-year-old woman developed headache and rapidly progressive visual disturbances during the last trimester of her first pregnancy. Magnetic resonance tomography (MRI) of the brain documented an intra- and suprasellar mass lesion. For preservation of vision, transsphenoidal microsurgical decompression was performed. Immediately postoperatively, visual acuity improved and hemianopia resolved. Histological examination yielded the diagnosis of primary lymphocytic adenohypophysitis. This is a rare inflammatory pituitary disease. There are no typical clinical, laboratory, or radiological findings that allow precise preoperative diagnosis. Even though this autoimmune disorder is principally steroid-responsive, an improvement of visual disturbances under steroid therapy cannot be predicted. Therefore, surgery is justified not only to establish the diagnosis, but also to restore vision by decompression of the optic nerves and the chiasm.

    Notes: Abstract The IgG-subclass usage by several strains of mice in the response to immunization with mouse thyroglobulin (mTg) was examined in the experimental autoimmune thyroiditis model. While the subclass usage by most mouse strains was similar, the Ighb allotype-bearing mice consistently produced lower IgG2a levels to mTg. Using CBA-Igh b congenic and recombinant inbred strains of mice, the lower level of IgG2a in the Ighb mouse was mapped to the Igh locus. The regulation of IgG2a appeared to be cis controlled, as the CBA x C57BL/6F1 mouse also produced reduced IgG2a of the Ighb (B6) allotype but not Ighj (CBA) allotype.

    Notes: Summary Patients with chronic renal failure are prone to develop negative nitrogen balance resulting clinically in wasting and malnutrition. To study the role of glucocorticoids in the pathogenesis of uremic catabolism, we determined urinary excretion rates of urea and Nt-methylhistidine in chronically uremic rats with and without RU 38 486, a potent antiglucocorticoid. In comparison to pair-fed non-uremic animals, chronically uremic rats displayed significantly enhanced ureagenesis, as demonstrated by increased urinary urea excretion, and myofibrillar protein breakdown, as indicated by increased excretion rates of urinary Nt-methylhistidine. The administration of RU 38486 to chronically uremic rats, however, did not result in a normalization of urinary excretion of Nt-methylhistidine. Similarily, the antiglucocorticoid did not influence the extent of ureagenesis in our uremic animals, as it was demonstrated by comparable levels of urinary urea excretion. This suggests that glucocorticoids are not involved in the pathogenesis of enhanced catabolism in chronic renal insufficiency.

    Notes: Abstract Solitary brain affection is rare in echinococcosis. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman presenting with symptomatic grand-mal epilepsy due to a right frontal, partially cystic space-occupying lesion. Pre-operative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested a cystic astrocytoma. However, histological examination yielded the diagnosis of a `chitinoma', a rare subtype of solid cerebral hydatid disease (echinococcosis). It mimicked a primary brain tumor and, therefore, posed a diagnostic problem. We present the – to our knowledge – first MRI scans in a case of a histologically proven chitinoma.
