Notes: 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1Electrolytic lesions were made in various brain regions of the rat, and the effects of these lesions on nociceptive threshold and the antinociceptive actions of morphine were tested using a shock titration technique.2Lesions in the medial thalamus, the periaqueductal grey area, or the caudate nucleus, had no effect on the nociceptive threshold; whereas, lesions in the posterior hypothalamus resulted in a small but statistically significant increase in this threshold.3Morphine administered intraperitoneally to rats having histologically verified lesions in the posterior hypothalamus, the caudate nucleus or the periaqueductal grey area resulted in a 15–30% increase in the nociceptive threshold. This increase was similar to that observed in unoperated control rats. On the other hand, injections of morphine into animals having greater than 50% of the medial thalamus destroyed produced a highly significant increase of 95% in the threshold. This potentiation of the antinociceptive action of morphine was not observed in rats having less than 50% destruction of the medial thalamus.

Notes: This study presents a quantitative description of tempromandibular joint (TMJ) sounds provided by a rule-based classification system based on sound classification by three dentists, who listened to and classified the sound recordings as no sound, click, coarse crepitus and fine crepitus. The sounds were recorded with microphones in the ear canal from 126 subjects during vertical opening, digitized at 15 000 Hz, and replayed using a computer sound card and speakers. The dentists’ classification of a test set resulted in intra- and inter-tester j values ranging from 0·71 to 0·81 and 0·61–0·73, respectively. Pooled j values for the dentists and the dentists plus the rules were 0·67 and 0·58, respectively, which were not significantly different in terms of the sound features on which the rules were based (P = 0·13). Linear discriminant analysis showed the four TMJ sound types were significantly different (P 〈 0·001). The performance of the rules was equivalent to the dentists and marginally better than the linear discriminant functions (P = 0·08), establishing the validity of the quantitative descriptions they provide. The recording and rebroadcast methodology produced sounds very similar to those observed in the clinic and could be used to train clinicians in classifying TMJ sounds.

Notes: Summary The effect of adjuvantly administered, newly developed immunoglobulin preparations in combination with an antibiotic is investigated by means of an animal experimental model. The animal model was peritonitis which was induced by a left-open colotomy in the rat. Administration of a combination therapy of immunoglobulins and an antibiotic succeeded in reducing lethality and shock index (according to Staub [15]) significantly by up to 50% as compared to the untreated control group. Using sub-therapeutic dosage of the antibiotic (50% of the human equivalent dose) the synergistic effect of the immunoglobulins could be confirmed clearly. A single summation of the offered immunoglobulin preparations cannot achieve an improvement in the results. In the present examinations additional IgM-enrichment does not result in a further improvement over the usually normal immunoglobulin levels in the preparations.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In einer prospektiven Untersuchung wurden bei 97 Patienten (39 Frauen, 58 Männer) vor und nach Lebertransplantation (Ltx) die Interleukin-2-Rezeptor(Il-2-R)-Spiegel im Serum und die Endothelin(Et)-Spiegel im Plasma sequentiell gemessen.
Notes: Abstract In a prospective study levels of interleukin-2 receptors (II-2-R) in serum and of endothelin (ET) in plasma were sequentially determined in 97 patients (39 women, 58 men) before and after liver transplantation (Ltx). The aim of the study was no evaluate the correlation and the time course of these two parameters after Ltx. The postoperative levels of Il-2-R and ET were higher in transplant recipients with no postoperative complications than in patients who had undergone operations to the liver. Patients suffering from acute rejection episodes after transplantation had more markedly increased Il-2-R and ET levels than those with an uneventful course, and this persisted for 3 months. A significant rise of Il-2-R concentrations 3–6 days before a biopsy confirmed rejection proved to have a sensitivity of 68% and a specificity of 68% respectively. A corresponding ET increase preceded rejection episodes confirmed by biopsy with a sensitivity of 62% and a specificity of 67%, respectively. These laboratory data can be obtained daily: they cannot undermine the “gold standard” of liver biopsy, but they are extremely beneficial in determining the timing and indication for the liver biopsy.

Notes: Liquid chromatographic (LC) type trace enrichment is coupled online with capillary gas chromatography (GC) with mass spectrometric (MS) detection for the analysis of aqueous samples. A volume of 1-10 ml of an aqueous sample is preconcentrated on a trace-enrichment column packed with a polymeric stationary phase. After cleanup with HPLC-grade water the precolumn is dried with nitrogen and subsequently desorbed with ethyl acetate. A fraction of 60 μl is introduced on-line into a diphenyltetramethyldisilazane-deactivated retention gap under partially concurrent solvent evaporation conditions and using an early solvent vapor exit. The analytes are separated and detected by means of GC-MS. The potential of the LC-GC-MS system for monitoring organic pollutants in river and drinking water is studied. Target analysis is carried out with atrazine and simazine as model compounds; the detection limits achieved under full-scan and multiple ion detection conditions are 30 pg and 5 pg, respectively. Identification of unknown compounds (non-target analysis), is demonstrated using a river water sample spiked with 168 pollutants varying in polarity and volatility.
