Notizen: Magneto-photoluminescence from mesa-shaped Cd0.95Mn0.05Te/Cd0.90Mg0.10Te quantum wires were studied. The Zeeman shift of the excitonic photoluminescence from the quantum wires in a magnetic field is significantly decreased, compared to that from quantum wells. This decrease results from the possible reduction of the exchange interaction of electrons and holes with Mn ions in low dimensional structures. In the excitonic photoluminescence of the quantum wires with the width of 50–100 nm, the transient relaxation of the luminescence peak energy due to the excitonic magnetic polaron formation is remarkably less than that in the quantum well. This result shows the suppressed excitonic magnetic polaron effect in the narrower quantum wires. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract A full-length cDNA of the gene for phytochrome A from Arabidopsis thaliana was fused with the 35S promoter of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV35S-PHYA) and introduced into horseradish (Armoracia rusticana Gaert., Mey. et Scherb.) hairy roots. The phytochrome level in hairy roots transformed with CaMV35SPHYA was about three times greater than that in normal hairy roots and the rate of light-induced formation of adventitious shoots was also higher in the hairy roots transformed with CaMV35SPHYA. These results indicate that the light-induced formation of adventitious shoots on horseradish hairy roots is closely related to the phytochrome level.

Notizen: Abstract  Three cDNAs for phytochrome A (phyA), designated ArPHYA1, ArPHYA2 and ArPHYA3, respectively, were isolated from a cDNA library prepared from proximal parts of the hairy roots of horseradish (Armoracia rusticana). The level of phyA was higher in those parts than in any other parts of hairy roots. The amino acid sequences deduced from the cDNAs were quite similar, with stronger homology to the product of PHYA of Arabidopsis thaliana than to products of genes for phytochromes of many other plant species. Levels of transcripts in roots and tubers were higher than those in leaves and petioles. The levels in hairy roots were highest at the proximal ends and increased with increased duration of culture in darkness. Furthermore, the levels in proximal parts decreased by 25–50% after light irradiation. The elevated levels of transcripts of PHYA genes at the proximal ends of hairy roots are discussed with reference to the light-induced formation of adventitious shoots.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, a method using the mean velocity profiles for the buffer layer was developed for the estimation of the virtual origin over a riblets surface in an open channel flow. First, the standardized profiles of the mixing length were estimated from the velocity measurement in the inner layer, and the location of the edge of the viscous layer was obtained. Then, the virtual origins were estimated by the best match between the measured velocity profile and the equations of the velocity profile derived from the mixing length profiles. It was made clear that the virtual origin and the thickness of the viscous layer are the function of the roughness Reynolds number. The drag variation coincided well with other results.

Notizen: Early stages of heat deterioration of some siliconcontaining aromatic polyimide thin films with disiloxane groups (I) in their main chains were studied with XPS. It was found that the thermal decomposition of silicon-containing aromatic polyimides takes place at lower temperatures than those not modified with silicon. The low thermal stabilities observed are explained by the easier decomposition of silicon-carbon bonds (e.g. silicon-methylene, silicon-aryl) than other bonds (e.g. carbon-carbon, carbon-oxygen). Particularly, silicon-methylene bonds (II) readily undergo thermal oxidative decomposition and start to decompose at 350°C under aerobic conditions. This starting temperature of thermal decomposition is lower by 100°C than that of the corresponding polyimide not modified with silicon. In the case of polyimide incorporating silicon-aryl bonds (III) instead of silicon-methylene bonds, the decrease in the thermal decomposition temperature is as small as 50°C, and decomposition under aerobic conditions starts at 400°C.
