Notes: Summary Exact results on the single-spin-flip Glauber dynamics of six-coupled random field Ising spins with the coordination number of four are presented. Two distributions of random fields (RF), binary (BD) and Gaussian (GD) ones, are investigated. The effects of the static magnetic field are discussed. In the zero-magnetic-field case, the number of diverging relaxation times is equal to the number of energy minima minus one. This rule breaks in the presence of a magnetic field. The longest relaxation times in the absence of the field verify the Arrhenius law with the energy barrier determined by the energy needed to invert the ground-state spin configuration. At low temperature, according to the Arrhenius law, the spectrum of relaxation times shows a two-peaked distribution on a logarithmic scale. In the GD case of RF, the energy barrier distribution is continuous, while it is quasi-discrete in the BD case.

Notes: Abstract The geometry and electronic structure of the parent formaldehyde hydrazone and some ethylcyanoacetate phenylhydrazones (ECPHs) are studied at the semiempirical level of MO theory using the AM1 method. The effect of substitution on the geometry of the hydrazone moiety is investigated. The optimized geometry of formaldehyde hydrazone is nonplanar while in the ECPHs the planarity of the hydrazone group and its coplanarity with the phenyl ring increase in the direction of the electron-attracting ability of the para substituent. This has been attributed to an increase in the p–π conjugation between the lone pair of electrons on the amine nitrogen and the phenyl ring. Variations of ionization potentials and bond orders with the Hammett constant, σ p , are examined and straight-line relationships are obtained. The results are correlated with the observed variations in the experimentally measured electrical conductivities of the studied compounds.

Notes: Abstract The electrical and spectral properties of some ethyl cyanoacetate phenylhydrazone derivatives have been investigated. Results obtained show anomalous metallic-like and semiconducting behaviours corresponding to the low and higher temperature ranges. At high temperatures a positive temperature coefficient of electrical conductivity (dΣ/dT) provides evidence for the semiconducting character, and the linear correlation indicates metallic-like behaviour at a low temperature range. Values of activation energy (δE) were calculated in each case. In addition, the current-voltage dependence of the hydrazone derivatives was investigated. This showed that the compounds under study have ohmic conduction. The correlation between γmax and Σa Hammett constant was also investigated. The hydrazone derivatives are thermolabile and undergo thermochromic behaviour during heating.

Notes: Abstract The reliability of the relative sensitivity factor (RSF) approach for secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) quantification of the leached layers on glass was investigated by measuring comparable samples of glass with SIMS and RBS (Rutherford backscattering spectrometry). The RSF factors were calculated using the nominal bulk compositions. Accurate results can be obtained only when the leached layer and the bulk glass have the same major elemental compositions (Si and O) and the matrix effect is inhibited. The concentrations of the different elements in the leached layer obtained from the comparable samples measured by SIMS and RBS are coincident within a factor of 2

Notes: Abstract The bioactivity of different formulations of neem seed extracts against the whiteflyBemisia tabaci (Genn.) was assayed in semifield trials during 1992. Tomato plants variety UC-97 were cultivated in pots and left to natural infestation with whitefly in an open field and sprayed with various concentrations of each extract. The high concentrations of all the extracts tested exhibited obvious activity. Also, the different treatments reduced the population density of the adult whiteflies compared with the control. The percentage reduction in the population reached its maximum level one hour after treatment with any tested extract.

Notes: Abstract The coastal waters of Kuwait are widely used for bathing during the long summer season. In order to assess the water quality along the beaches, a new approach was developed. It involves the use of clam, Circenita callipyga, as a bioindicator for seawater pollution by fecal coliform bacteria (FC), antibotic resistant fecal coliform (ABR-FC) and Salmonella spp. These organisms were detected in clam and water samples and the efficiency of clam in concentrating Salmonella was confirmed. The number of FC and ABR-FC in clam and water samples were compared and a higher number was detected in clams than in water. Five isolates of Salmonella from clams were also multidrug resistant. The data suggests that clam can be used as a bioindicator of seawater pollution and is preferable to direct testing of water. The resistance to antibiotics in E. coli isolated from water and clams collected at the same time and site was of similar pattern and was determined by R-plasmid.
