Notes: The results of magnetoresistance measurements on a naturally occurring multilayer LaMn2Ge2, which is ferromagnetic below 326 K, are reported. The magnitude of magnetoresistance is found to be positive below 70 K gradually increasing to an unusually large value (nearly 100%) at 4.2 K in the presence of a field of 70 kOe as the temperature is lowered, similar to the recent observations by Verbanck, Temst, Mae, Schad, Van Bael, Moshchalkov, and Bruynseraede [Appl. Phys. Lett. 70, 1477 (1997)] in Cr/Ag/Cr trilayers. The positive sign of magnetoresistance for a ferromagnet is unexpected and possible explanations are offered. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The influence of the application of a magnetic field (H) on the temperature (T) dependence of heat capacity and isothermal magnetization has been investigated in Gd2PdSi3, a compound ordering antiferromagnetically below (TN=)21 K in zero H. Among other findings, the one to be emphasized is the observation of significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE) over about a 30 K range with a peak in the vicinity of TN. This finding suggests that this material could be useful for magnetic refrigeration below 50 K. The results also establish that either of the two experimental methods—heat capacity or magnetization—can be applied to identify materials with large MCE. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The compound, CePt2Ge2, recently reported to crystallize in a monoclinic modification of the CaBe2Ge2 structure, has been identified to be an antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice (T N =2.2 K). The influence of positive and negative chemical pressure on the Kondo behavior is investigated by measurements of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity (ρ) on the solid solutions, Ce1−x La x Pt2Ge2 and Ce1−z Y z Pt2Ge2. Y and La substituents cause nearly similar effects on the magnetic and electrical resistivity behaviour of CePt2Ge2, though the unit-cell volumes vary in opposite directions. We propose that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction may contribute to decide the temperature at which ρ attains a maximum at low temperatures (∼5 K) in CePt2Ge2.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the lattice constants of the alloys, RCu2Ge2 (R=Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Tm) shows the existence of a lattice strain due to the alignment of the 4f-electric quadrupole at low temperatures. This strain could be related to the deviation of the Néel temperatures (T N ) from that predicted by de Gennes scaling, thereby indicating the role of the quadrupole on the magnetism. On the other hand, in PrCu2Ge2, for which the enhancement ofT N is the largest in thisR series, the lattice constants interestingly behave as if the 4f-quadrupole moment is almost quenched and the anomalous magnetism in this case is attributed to some degree of 4f-delocalisation.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-In K.S. Jayaraman's article on "Superconductivity" (Nature 326, 237; 1987), there are some factual errors. (1) There are several teams working on superconductivity in India and the team that reported, following the work of Chu et al., the highest superconducting onset and zero-resistance ...

Notes: Abstract 151Eu Mössbauer studies have been made across the respective superconductive transition temperatures in two compounds, La1.7Eu0.1Sr0.2CuO4−y and EuBa2Cu3O7, having zero resistance state at 25K and 85K respectively. The151Eu isomer shift data establish that Eu ions are in trivalent state at all temperatures. The Mössbauer f-factor does not show any significant anomaly across the TC.

Notes: Abstract Experimental observations for possible presence of 4f quadrupolar Kondo effect in PrCu2Si2 are critically discussed. A comparison of the low temperature properties of the alloys, Pr x Y1−x Cu2Si2 (x=0.05, 0.2 and 0.4), seems to signal the existence of 4f electric quadrupolar glass phenomenon around 4K forx=0.2.

Notes: Abstract The effects of substituting Eu by other rare-earth elements on the valence of Eu in EuNi5 was studied using the 21.7-keV Mössbauer resonance of151Eu. The experimental results support the view of a dominant influence of the local electronic structure on the valence of Eu as compared to the unit-cell volume.

Notes: Abstract The current status of the phenomenon of intermediate valence in rare earth systems is surveyed. Particular attention is paid to the merits and demerits of various experimental methods employed to obtain the value of the mean valence of the rare earth ion, followed by the discussion on the cerium problem.
