Notes: The photoluminescence characteristics (peak intensity, peak wavelength and full width at half maximum of the emission band) of p-type porous silicon have been measured as a function of the etching time. Experimental data are discussed in the light of a pore nucleation and growth mechanism recently proposed by the authors. The steps of the formation of the porous layer are clearly apparent in the photoluminescence characteristic evolution. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Polarized photoluminescence as well as birefringence measurements have been performed in different films of side-chain liquid crystal polyacrylates prepared by in situ photopolymerization. The polymeric systems contain a cyanoterphenyl chromophore covalently bound as a side group. The stability of the luminescence has been studied as a function of the composition and crosslinking of the polymer films. Although both the thermal quenching and the optical bleaching of the luminescence depend on the composition of the polymer matrix they seem to be independent of the crosslinking degree. Polymer films showing a stable luminescence with a high dichroic ratio have been obtained in copolymers combining mono and diacrylates having the same mesogenic core, with a low content (10%) of the diacrylate (crosslinking agent). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An experimental setup to measure "in situ" the amount of H that a Pd cathode absorbs during the electrolysis of aqueous solutions has been built up and tested. The setup implements a volumetric technique, i.e., it involves the measurement of the rate of H2 generation by the cathode. The pros and cons of this type of techniques against other procedures, the measurement of the variation of the cathode electrical resistance or of its dilation during the electrolysis, are briefly discussed. A careful analysis of the setup error sources is done by using two non-H-absorbing Pt electrodes. Neither any significant recombination of the electrolysis gases (H2 and O2), nor any deviation of a 100% electrolysis efficiency have been observed. It has been found that gas (air) release and H2 and O2 absorption by the solution, in the first stage of the electrolysis, seriously affect the measurement of the rate of H absorption by the cathode. Several improvements of the experimental installation and an operation protocol of saturation of H2 and O2 and of exhaustion of air in the solution, before starting the electrolysis, allowed overcoming those limitations. Finally, we present the results obtained in the measurement of the rate of H uptake by a Pd cathode during electrolysis. The reliability of the measurement has been confirmed by electrochemically deloading the Pd cathode. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Biphotonic holographic recording has been performed on thin films of a side-chain liquid crystalline p-cyanoazobenzene polymethacrylate. Polarization and intensity holographic gratings have been recorded by irradiation of the films with blue incoherent light and simultaneous or subsequent illumination with the red light pattern generated by the interference of two properly polarized beams from a He–Ne laser. The influence of temperature and illumination conditions on the diffraction efficiency of those gratings has been studied. Surface topography of the films has been explored using a profilometer. The appearance of relief gratings using biphotonic processes has been observed only in gratings recorded with simultaneous illumination of blue light and an intensity modulated light pattern of the red light. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Oriented liquid crystal polymer films with different degrees of cross-linking have been obtained by "in situ" photopolymerization of different mesogenic samples at various temperatures. These samples are mixtures of a naphthalene based monoacrylate and a crosslinking agent (diacrylate). Photoluminescence has been obtained by adding a cyanoterphenyl chromophore. The order parameters of the polymer films have been derived from dichroic measurements. An increase of the dichroism has been found when the diacrylate content and/or the polymerization temperature decrease. The dichroism is also bigger if the chromophore is in a "guest-host" configuration than if it is covalently attached to the polymer backbone. The dichroic ratios do not change under annealing up to 200 °C but some photodegradation of the luminescence is observed in the naphthalene containing films. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Iron pyrite thin films prepared by flash evaporation of pyrite powder have been annealed at different temperatures in a sulfur atmosphere. We present some results on the influence of the annealing temperature (from 250 to 450 °C) on the optical and electrical properties of three groups of samples with different thicknesses ((approximately-equal-to)0.3, 0.6, and 1 μm, respectively). Sulfuration temperature has a clear influence on the optical absorption and electrical resistivity of the films, with some differences in their behavior depending on the film thickness. In light of the available present knowledge of pyrite thin films, interpretation of the obtained results is difficult, it suggests that the shape of the optical absorption curves (and their absorption edge) at low photon energies is determined by the density of point defects, which decreases on increasing the annealing temperature. On the other hand, the electrical resistivity seems to be influenced by both the film grain size and point defect density.

Notes: FeS2 thin films were prepared by thermal sulfidation of iron layers evaporated on glass substrates. Experiments were carried out to optimize the sulfidation parameters. For this purpose, morphological, compositional, crystallographic, optical, and electrical properties of the produced films and their relation with the parameters involved in the sulfidation process (temperature, sulfur pressure) are presented. From x-ray spectra and energy dispersive analyses of x ray it is concluded that FeS2 starts to be formed at sulfidation temperatures about 200 °C. X-ray patterns show that crystallinity and grain size of the films improve with the sulfidation temperature with a "critical value'' which varies with the sulfur pressure. On the other hand, both the film resistivity and the optical absorption coefficient change abruptly at temperatures higher than 350 °C. Above 500 °C polycrystalline aggregates known as "framboidal pyrite'' are observed.
