    Notes: In this paper we describe the cloning of a putative ionotropic glutamate receptor subunit, SqGluR, and its distribution in the nervous system of the squid. A full-length cDNA was assembled from a cDNA library of the stellate ganglion/giant fibre lobe complex of Loligo opalescens. The deduced amino acid sequence of the mature SqGluR displayed 44–46% amino acid identity with mammalian GluR1–GluR4 and 53% with Lym-eGluR1 from Lymnaea stagnalis. In situ hybridizations in adult squid confirmed that the SqGluR mRNA is abundant in giant fibre lobe neurons, in large, presumptive motor neurons of the stellate ganglion proper and in the supraoesophageal and optic lobes of the central nervous system. In newborn squid, SqGluR mRNA expression was detected throughout the nervous system but not elsewhere. A synthetic peptide corresponding to the last 15 amino acids of the SqGluR C-terminus was used to generate polyclonal antibodies, which were used for immunoblot analysis to demonstrate widespread expression in the squid central and peripheral nervous systems. Injection of the synthetic peptide into the postsynaptic side of the giant synapse inhibited synaptic transmission.

    Notes: After Haines & Torta (1994) applied spherical cap harmonic analysis (SCHA) to deduce the formulation of equivalent currents in terms of spherical cap harmonic coefficients, it seemed appropriate to extend the same scheme that relates global spherical harmonics with the Earth's conductivity structure to regional modelling of geomagnetic-field variations. From the considerations made in this paper it seems difficult or even impossible to obtain either a conductivity-depth profile (by assuming a homogeneous mantle conductivity within the region) or a 3-D structure, from a regional analysis of global-scale phenomena such as the regular daily variation, by using the same formulations as employed in global analyses. There exist, in addition, some intrinsic limits of SCHA itself, which, although in general do not decrease its potential in regional geomagnetic modelling, can affect the derivation of a proper conductivity estimation.

    Notes: Summary The adhesion of leucocytes to the endothelium, an early step in atherogenesis, is mediated by cell adhesion molecules. In this study we evaluated the concentration of soluble adhesion molecules in patients with insulin-dependent (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and studied its relation to glycaemic control. Soluble adhesion molecules E-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) were measured in 31 diabetic patients (18 with IDDM and 13 with NIDDM), 20 hyperlipoproteinaemic patients (10 with type II a and 10 with type II b) and 20 healthy subjects. Increased E-selectin concentrations were found in the patients with IDDM and NIDDM and in the hyperlipoproteinaemic patients when compared to the control subjects (p 〈 0.01 for all the groups). ICAM-1 was found to be elevated only in the patients with NIDDM (p 〈 0.01). No significant differences in VCAM-1 concentration were found in the different groups of subjects. The concentration of plasma E-selectin was positively correlated with the glycated haemoglobin (r = 0.54, p 〈 0.01) in patients with IDDM and NIDDM. In the same patients E-selectin was not related to the concentrations of plasma lipids in spite of the fact that it was found to be elevated in hyperlipoproteinaemic subjects. The results though preliminary suggest that in diabetic patients the concentration of soluble adhesion molecules and especially of E-selectin may be related to metabolic control.     Notes: Abstract Bile may contain a 130-kDa protein endowed withaminopeptidase activity and the ability to promotecholesterol crystallisation. As 〉 90% of H. pyloristrains have a similar peptidase activity, and half the isolates express a 110- to 140-kDa antigen, theCagA protein, we investigated a possible associationbetween H. pylori infection and gallstones, and thepresence in bile samples of factors related to H. pylori that could increase cholesterolcrystallization. The prevalence of H. pylori infectionwas 82.1% in 112 patients with gallstones and 80.3% in112 controls (NS). Fifteen bile samples out of 23specimens from infected patients (65.2%) containedanti-CagA antibodies. A ~60-kDa antigen only reactingwith an anti-CagA antibody was found in five bilesamples (21.7%) from 23 infected patients. One bilesample (4.1%) contained ureA and cagA genes of H.pylori. The homology of CagA with the N-terminalsequence of aminopeptidase N was very low. We concludedthat the presence of specific antibody to H. pylori in most bile samples tested and of an H. pyloriputative antigen in a discrete number of cases mayrepresent factors that increase the risk of gallstoneformation.
