Notes: This paper describes the influence of deliberately applied scribe damage on pits formed in (001) Si wafers by immersion in a hydrofluoric acid solution. Immersion caused dense pitting, which correlates with stacking faults. However, a pit-poor region appears in the strained vicinity of the scribe damage. The strain introduced in the damage vicinity is thought to promote Si dissolution judging from the measurement of induced current and voltage for a wafer subjected to bending stress. For a wafer annealed subsequently to damage application, a pit-rich region is found to be propagated along the (111) and (001) intersection in the damage vicinity where gettering is presumed to have occurred. Both the pit-poor and pit-rich regions present for the respective wafers are ascertained to be wider by one order of magnitude than the dislocation formation region introduced in the damage area. The pit formation is strongly influenced by the elastic strain, which is formed around the damage, as well as by mechanical damage gettering.

Notes: A strongly focused Nd:YAG laser beam has been used experimentally to achieve optical trapping and simultaneous rotation of a micro-object about an axis perpendicular to the trapping laser beam axis. The micro-object (12 μm in diameter), which has shape anisotropy in its interior, can be produced by oxygen reactive ion etching of a fluorinated polyimide film (refractive index n=1.53). This optically induced rotation of the micro-object in ethanol (n=1.36) is accomplished by utilizing the net radiation pressure force arising from the momentum change of light scattered at the micro-object's inner walls. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fluorinated polyimide micro-objects having large birefringence of Δn=−0.13 (refractive index n1=1.62, n2=1.49 for the wavelength λ=1.06 μm), which were fabricated by reactive ion etching and suspended in water (n=1.33), were trapped and angularly aligned in a single Gaussian laser beam (λ=1.06 μm, power P〉3 μW). The optically induced angular alignment effect is caused by the transfer of spin angular momentum due to the interaction between their birefringence and the linearly polarized light. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Distribution and morphology for dislocations introduced in (001) Si wafers subjected to bending stress at 800°, 900°, and 1100°C were investigated. For wafers bent around a [110] axis at 900° and 1100°C, straight dislocations appeared along the [110] direction only near the neutral plane, and were absent at the surfaces where bending stress is greatest. However, for wafers bent at 800 °C, such straight dislocations were not formed. Dependence of the dislocation distribution and morphology on heat treatment temperature is explained on the basis of interaction between bending stress and SiO2 precipitates introduced in bulk. Also, it was found that the straight [110] dislocations remained still near the neutral plane, even when additional reverse bending stress was applied around an axis parallel to the dislocations, but were transfered toward the tensile surface by bending around an axis normal to the dislocation direction.

Notes: Abstract  A method for fabricating a microstructure with a high aspect ratio has been developed. It uses a combination of fluorinated polyimide and silicone-based positive photoresist, which reduces the number of process steps and the turn-around time. This fabrication method is applicable to optical micromachines and IC probes.

Notes: Abstract Twelve Japanese rice cultivars were converted to CMS by asymmetric protoplast fusion with MTC-5A, the cytoplasm of which was derived from an indica rice, Chinsurah Boro II. With the exception of the cybrids that had a nucleus from Hoshiyutaka, most of these cybrid plants were sterile. The unique sequence downstream from the mitochondrial atp6 of MTC-5A was specifically amplified in the sterile cybrid plants by PCR. All progenies of the cybrid plants carrying this unique sequence were sterile. On the other hand, in some of the sterile cybrid plants in which the unique sequence was not amplified by PCR, fertility was recovered in their progenies. Somaclonal mutation may have caused sterility in these cybrids. Only the cybrid plants that had the unique sequence detected by PCR were CMS. Thus, the CMS plants can be selected rapidly and easily by PCR, at an early stage of plant regeneration. Soon after transplanting the regenerated plants to a green house, fertile cybrids and sterile cybrids produced by somaclonal mutation can be removed. These findings also show that the unique region downstream from atp6 is tightly linked with the CMS phenotype.

Notes: Summary Lunar tidal oscillations of an atmosphere with zonal winds are discussed theoretically. The main effect comes from vertical wind shears of middle latitude zonal winds. If, however, the zonal wind system is strictly antisymmetric with respect to the equator, there is no effect of the wind system. It is the equator-symmetric component of zonal wind systems that plays an important role. The meridional temperature gradient has no pronounced influence. There is a possibility that the observed annual variations of the lunar tide can be interpreted as a result of seasonal variations of zonal wind systems. But the proof requires information about the zonal winds in the southern hemisphere which is not yet available. Another possibility, namely the interpretation of the seasonal variation as a result of annual variations of global mean vertical temperature profile remains to be investigated and compared to the present result.
