Description / Table of Contents: Summary Isotropic and anisotropic membrane shells of variable thickness and arbitrary middle surface geometry (not necessarily axisymmetrical) are considered. It is first shown that, independently of the shell thickness, the curvatures in every point of the middle surface must satisfy a necessary condition if the shell is to be capable of carrying its own weight or a mass force proportional to the thickness. The v. Mises yield criterium is used to derive an explicit form of this necessary condition which can be formulated either in terms of the mean curvature and the Gaussian curvature or as an inequality which must be satisfied by at least one principal curvature in every point of the middle surface. The problem of isotropic and anisotropic shells of equal strength is then discussed and a nonlinear partial differential equation is derived which practically determines the shell thickness in function of the coordinates once the middle surface geometry is known. A remark on the deformation up to the yield limit for a special form of linear elastic isotropic shells of equal strength closes the paper.

Notes: Summary This paper presents a review of the elementary theories on the bending of straight and curved beams, on plates and shells, using asymptotic approximations of the basic linearized equations of elasticity in three dimensions. The maximun norm has been chosen to specify the orders of magnitude of the quantities involved. The expansions are given as usual in terms of the small geometrical parameter characterizing the thinness of the structure. Most of the ideas and results are well known. Nevertheless, in the cases where more than one small parameter may be involved, such as small curvatures (shallow structures) or the small loading parameter used to linearize the equations of elasticity, the discussion on the limits of validity of the different theories lead to some interesting newer aspects. Moreover, the main ideas presented in this paper concerning multiple parameter expansions may be applied to discuss the behaviour of the structures and to obtain valuable analytical results in more complicated situations such as moderate and strong anisotropy, dynamic problems, stability etc.

Notes: Summary I. This report on thin-walled circular cylindrical shells of ideal-plastic material obeying the exact Tresca yield condition consists of two main parts. In the first part a general method of solution for exact collapse loads for 1° rigid-plastic material, 2° axially symmetrical loading, 3° radial load and axial load constant or piecewise constant over the shell length is illustrated by a number of examples. The case of a ring force previously treated byG. Eason [7] is generalised by inclusion of axial loading and admission of various end conditions. For the case of a distributed radial load and an axial load exact solutions are given.

Notes: Summary II. In the second part of this paper post-elastic deformations of an elastic-plastic cylindrical shell are considered. For the relatively simple case of an infinite shell subjected to a ring force the various phases accompanying the settling of plastic deformations are discussed in detail. It is shown by numerical treatment of the exact differential equations that the deformations remain small in the elastic-plastic phase up to more than 90% of the exact collapse load predicted by the rigid plastic analysis, but that nevertheless they tend to infinity as this collapse load is approached.

Notes: Summary The theorems of limit analysis and the compatibility theorem are extended to 3-dimensional rigid-perfectly plastic bodies containing stress and velocity discontinuities. Attention is focussed on isotropic bodies with a convex yield surface, and in particular a few general results are obtained for plane flow.

Notes: Summary The semi-graphical complete solutions proposed byBishop for the Prandtl indentation problem and forV-notched bars in two-dimensional plastic flow are treated analytically. Applying directly the integration method of Riemann for second boundary value problems of hyperbolic differential equations to the slip-line fields in the rigid regions some exact results are derived and discussed; eventually the collapse load corresponding to both cases is analytically confirmed.
