Summary Isotropic and anisotropic membrane shells of variable thickness and arbitrary middle surface geometry (not necessarily axisymmetrical) are considered. It is first shown that, independently of the shell thickness, the curvatures in every point of the middle surface must satisfy a necessary condition if the shell is to be capable of carrying its own weight or a mass force proportional to the thickness. The v. Mises yield criterium is used to derive an explicit form of this necessary condition which can be formulated either in terms of the mean curvature and the Gaussian curvature or as an inequality which must be satisfied by at least one principal curvature in every point of the middle surface. The problem of isotropic and anisotropic shells of equal strength is then discussed and a nonlinear partial differential equation is derived which practically determines the shell thickness in function of the coordinates once the middle surface geometry is known. A remark on the deformation up to the yield limit for a special form of linear elastic isotropic shells of equal strength closes the paper.
Notes:
