    Notes: Abstract The bacterium Sphingomonas sp. SS31, which was obtained from the diphenyl ether-degrading strain Sphingomonas sp. SS3 by an adaptation process, utilized 3-methyldiphenyl ether for growth in addition to diphenyl ether. The initial enzymatic attack onto this compound proceeded by a regioselective, but non-specific dioxygenation at the carbon carrying the ether bridge and the adjacent carbon of the unsubstituted as well as the methyl-substituted aromatic nucleus. Upon spontaneous decomposition, the resulting unstable hemiacetal structure yielded 3-methylphenol and catechol, or phenol, 3-methylcatechol, and 4-methylcatechol, respectively. Phenol and 3-methylphenol methylphenol were oxidized to the corresponding catechols which, after subsequent ortho-cleavage, were channeled into the oxoadipate pathway. Minor amounts of 3-(hydroxymethyl)-diphenyl ether detected in the supernatant of the culture broth gave evidence for an unproductive oxidation of the side-chain, finally leading to the nondegradble product 3-carboxydiphenyl ether.

    Notes: The microbial degradation of aromatic pollutants has been well characterized over a period of more than 30 years. The microbes of most interest have been bacteria and fungi. Only relatively recently has the question of how algae figure in the catabolism of these compounds attracted a degree of interest. The aim of this review is to highlight the biodegradative capabilities of microalgae on aromatic compounds, ranging from simple monocyclic to more complex polycyclic pollutants. This paper will briefly encompass studies which have investigated the growth on and the oxidation of these compounds by algae, as well as a more detailed characterization of the catabolic sequences involved in the transformation of these compounds.

    Notes: A bacterial isolate, tentatively identified as Pseudomonas sp. strain TR3, was found to utilize the diaryl ester phenylbenzoate as sole source of carbon and energy. This strain has the ability to productively degrade phenylbenzoate and some substituted derivatives by a catabolic sequence which was characterized biochemically. The biodegradation of phenylbenzoate is thus initiated by an inducible esterase, effectively hydrolyzing the diaryl esters to produce stoichiometric amounts of two monoaromatic metabolites, identified as benzoate and phenol in the case of phenylbenzoate. The diaryl ester p-tolylbenzoate was hydrolyzed to yield benzoate and 4-methylphenol while 4-chlorophenylbenzoate gave rise to the production of benzoate and 4-chlorophenol. These monoaromatic catabolites were further degraded via the oxoadipate pathway.

    Notes: The Pseudomonas sp. strain NSS2 capable to grow with 3- and 4-carboxybiphenyl ether (CBPE) as only carbon source was isolated from soil samples, phenol and protocatechuate were trasiently excerted into the culture medium. Identification of both catabolotes gives evidence for the oxygenolytic cleavase of the ether bond.

    Notes: Abstract 3,4-Dimethylbenzoic acid and 3,5-dimethylbenzoic acid were both oxidised by 4-methylbenzoate (p-toluate)-grown cells of Rhodococcus rhodochrous N75 via the ortho-pathway through the intermediates 3,4- and 3,5-dimethylcatechol, respectively. Owing to the formation of the two novel dead-end metabolites, 4-carboxymethyl-2,3-dimethylbut-2-en-1,4-olide and 4-carboxymethyl-2,4-dimethylbut-2-en-1,4-olide from these substrates, 3,4- and 3,5-dimethylbenzoate did not serve as growth substrates for the strain.

    Notes: Abstract Within the concept of projective lattice geometry we are considering the class of stable geometries which have also been introduced in [14]. The investigation of their basic properties will result in fundamental structure theorems which especially give a lattice-geometric characterization of free left modules of rank ≥6 over proper right Bezout rings of stable rank 2. This yields a proper generalization of previous results of ours.

    Notes: Abstract This paper contains a generalized approach to incidence geometry on partially ordered sets. A difference to the usual geometrical concepts is that points may have different size. Our main result states that a large class of spaces allows lattice theoretic characterizations. Especially, a generalized version of the Veblen-Young axiom of projective geometry has a lattice theoretic equivalent, called then-generation property (which is a generalization of the ‘Verbindungssatz’). Modularity and distributivity of a lattice of subspaces are reflected in the underlying space. Finally we give specializations and examples.

    Notes: Abstract The interest in pursuing projective geometry on modules has led to several lattice theoretic generalizations of the classical synthetic concept of projective geometry on vector spaces. Introduced in this paper is an approach that is capable of unifying various attempts within a new conceptual frame. This approach reflects algebraic properties from a lattice-geometric point of view. Together with new results we are presenting results from previous publications which have been improved in the frame of this work.
