Notizen: We use first principles electronic structure techniques to study the magnetic structure of γ-FeMn using the Korringa–Kohn–Rostocker multiple-scattering approach in conjunction with an extension of the single site coherent potential approximation to noncollinear magnetic structures. Our results show that the noncollinear 3Q and 2Q structures are both stable solutions with the former being slightly lower in energy. The collinear solutions could only be converged in a traditional spin-polarized calculation and are unstable in a noncollinear treatment. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: It has recently become possible to synthesize a class of nanostructured materials by ion implantation. The implanted ions aggregate into crystallographically oriented nanoscale inclusions in the host material. We have performed simulations of the magnetization curves for such assemblies of nanoscale Fe inclusions in a nonmagnetic host. We use random positions for the magnetic particles (not a regular grid) and include magnetostatic interactions in detail. We find that these materials are not adequately described by standard noninteracting theories—interactions have a significant effect. In particular, interactions can mask the effects of crystallite orientation, producing nearly isotropic hysteresis curves. The use of a noninteracting model could thus lead one to conclude, incorrectly, that the inclusions are randomly oriented. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effect of Ta and Ta/Cu seed layers, and Ta and Cu cap layers on the effective magnetic thickness of ultrathin permalloy (Ni81Fe19) was investigated for MRAM applications. The films were deposited by Ion Beam Deposition. The magnetic moment of each as-deposited permalloy film was measured using a B-H looper and a SQUID magnetometer. The films were further annealed at either 525 K for 1/2 h or 600 K for 1 h to study the effect of thermally driven interdiffusion on the magnetic moment of the permalloy film. Our theoretical calculations showed that the presence of 12% intermixing at the interface reduces the Ni moments to zero. Experimentally, it was shown that the tantalum rather than the copper interfaces are primarily responsible for the magnetically dead layers. The Ta seed layer interface produces a loss of moment equivalent to a magnetically dead layer of thickness 0.6±0.2 nm. The Ta metal in the cap layer results in a loss of moment equivalent to a dead layer of thickness 1.0±0.2 nm. Upon annealing, thermally driven interdiffusion is concluded to have a strong effect on the Ta(seed)/ Ni81Fe19 as-deposited interface, based on the doubling of the magnetically dead layer to 1.2±0.2 nm. The Ni81Fe19/Ta(cap) as-deposited interface slightly increases its equivalent magnetically dead layer upon annealing to 1.2±0.2 nm. As-deposited interfaces of Ta(seed)/permalloy and permalloy/Ta(cap) are not chemically equivalent and result in different magnetically dead layers, whereas after annealing to 600 K both interfaces attain comparable intermixing and magnetically dead layers. It was also shown that a half-hour anneal at the lower 525 K annealing temperature, which is closer to the actual processing temperature, results in only slight increase of the magnetically dead layer at both interfaces. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The electronic structures of several magnetic semiconductors were calculated using first-principles based electronic structure techniques. Calculations were performed both for periodic supercells and for disordered systems which were treated within the coherent potential approximation. Our results differ from the conventional atomic model for the Mn impurity. We find strong hybridization between the majority Mn d states and the majority valence band. We find that substitutional Mn impurities add states and electrons to the majority valence band but not to the minority. We find relatively strong carrier induced magnetic interactions between impurities. The sign of these interactions may however, change sign as a function of the distance between the impurities. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and spin-dependent tunneling may be used to make magnetic random access memory devices. We have applied first-principles based electronic structure techniques to understand these effects and in the case of GMR to model the transport properties of the devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We used the Layer Korringa Kohn Rostoker technique to calculate the electronic structure of cobalt-copper multilayers and spin valves from first principles within the local spin density approximation. Using this electronic structure together with a phenomenological self-energy which may vary from layer to layer, we calculated the non-local layer-dependent conductivity by means of the Kubo linear response formalism. By calculating the majority and minority conductivities for parallel and anti-parallel alignment of the moments in the cobalt layers we determined the giant magnetoresistance (GMR). Several interesting features emerge from the calculations. When the scattering rates are relatively high, we find that the contributions to the GMR are largely non-local, with the largest contributions arising from changes in the currents carried in a cobalt plane next to copper due to fields sensed in the cobalt layer on the other side of copper. When scattering rates are relatively low (comparable to that of cobalt and copper at room temperature), there are important contributions to the GMR from local conduction in the copper layers. This effect arises from the fact that when the component of the majority spin electron momentum parallel to the layers exceeds a certain value, it gets trapped in the copper layers. If the scattering rate is lower in the copper than in the cobalt there is a significant enhancement in the majority spin conductivity and in the GMR. This effect is analogous to the channeling of light by an optical waveguide. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Heisenberg exchange parameters at the interface of antiferromagnetic NiMn with ferromagnetic Co are calculated from first principles. We use a layer version of the Korringa–Kohn–Rostocker multiple-scattering approach and an expression, which is based on the expansion of the band energy, to calculate the exchange parameters from the underlying electronic structure. For bulk systems, the parameter sets yield Curie temperatures that are in good agreement with experimental values. In the interface region, the interlayer interactions in NiMn change significantly compared to the bulk while the intralayer interactions are almost unchanged. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We use a numerical, atomistic approach to calculate the magnetostatic coupling in spin valves. In addition to the numerical treatment, the coupling energy is evaluated analytically and it is shown that Néel's formula is accurate to first order in the ratio of roughness amplitude to grain size. We also generalize the formula so that it can be applied to systems such as Py/Co/Cu/Co/Py spin valves that have complex ferromagnetic layers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We use an atomistic Heisenberg model in conjunction with the classical Landau Lifshitz equation for the spin motion to study coupling mechanisms between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) films. Calculations for CoO/FM illustrate that there are two coupling mechanisms at work, the spin–flop coupling and an AFM–FM coupling through uncompensated defects. While the latter accounts for exchange bias and related phenomena, the former gives rise to a large coercivity and perpendicular alignment between FM spins and AFM easy axis. A combination of the two mechanisms explains apparent discrepancies between reversible and irreversible measurements of the AFM–FM coupling. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
