    Notes: Abstract  Although a fundamental physical parameter, surface tension is difficult to measure. Common tensiometry inaccuracy comes from failure to control air–liquid–solid contact conditions, or account for liquid meniscus geometry and buoyancy corrections. This paper describes an in situ tensiometry technique, based on withdrawal of a thin-walled tube from the liquid interface, that enforces a known air–liquid–solid contact condition. This technique can be pursued at any level of experimental hygiene. Experimental results for filtered tap water, an alcohol–water solution, and a surfactant–water solution show that results repeatable to three significant digits are obtained with modest effort for a variety of geometrical parameters.

    Notes: Abstract Chebyshev pseudospectral solutions of the biharmonic equation governing two-dimensional Stokes flow within a driven cavity converge poorly in the presence of corner singularities. Subtracting the strongest corner singularity greatly improves the rate of convergence. Compared to the usual stream function/ vorticity formulation, the single fourth-order equation for stream function used here has half the number of coefficients for equivalent spatial resolution and uses a simpler treatment of the boundary conditions. We extend these techniques to small and moderate Reynolds numbers.

    Notes: Abstract The velocity potential around two spheres moving perpendicularly to the line joining their centers is given by a series of spherical harmonics. The appropriateness of the truncation is evaluated by determining the residual normal surface velocity on the spheres. In evaluating the residual normal velocity, a recursive procedure is constructed to evaluate the spherical harmonics to reduce computational effort and truncation error as compared to direct transformation or numerical integration. We estimate the lift force coefficient for touching spheres to be 0.577771, compared to the most accurate earlier estimate of 0.51435 by Miloh (1977).
