Notes: Abstract The hypothesis of a causal relationship between a progressive and unrestrained increase of tissue histamine formation by activation of an inducible histidine decarboxylase (HDC) and lethality in endotoxic shock (Schayer's ‘induced histamine concept’) was tested in a standardized rat endotoxic shock model. Initial enzyme identification studies in the rat shock liver (8 hrs after endotoxin challenge) clearly demonstrate that the ‘induced’ histidine decarboxylase is an acid (specific) HDC. The succeeding randomized, controlled study with appropriate inhibitors of the enzyme, α-methyl-histidine (competitive inhibitor) and α-fluoromethyl-histidine (irreversible inhibitor) using doses of 2, 20 or 100 mg/kg showedno significant effect on the survival rate of rats in endotoxin shock. The survival rate of the non-treated endotoxin control group (NaCl) was 25%; all methylprednisolone treated rats (50 mg/kg) survived. Thus, the ‘induced’ histamine isnot a predominant factor (necessary or sufficient determinant) for the lethal outcome in rat endotoxic shock. The protective effect of MP isnot predominantly due to the inhibition of the ‘induced’ histidine decarboxylase. The use of HDC-inhibitors as the appropriate instruments for evaluation of the significance of this mechanism is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the equilibrium shape and departure size of two-dimensional dropwise condensation drops on a vertical surface, presented in an earlier work, is extended to include advancing contact angles to 180°. The equation of the surface of the drop is obtained by minimizing (for a given volume) the total energy of the drop, consisting of surface and gravitational energy, using the techniques of variational calculus. The solution is tractable once the advancing contact angle is known, and is taken as an approximation to the axial meridian profile of a threedimensional drop. The receding contact angle is obtained as part of the solution. The drop size is specified by imposing its vertical length in contact with the wall. A maximum value of this length exists which provides a real solution, and this is taken as the departure size of the drop. It is shown that the general departure shape for an advancing contact angle of 180° includes the cases for all advancing contact angles.

Notes: Abstract Heterotopic ossification (HO) after total hip arthroplasty is known to be a major complication with an impact on the functional outcome. Efforts have been made to prevent the occurrence of HO by means of either radiation therapy or pharmacotherapy. To date, there are no data available regarding the relative benefit of radiation versus medication with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The objective of this study was to compare single-dose 600-cGy radiation therapy with indomethacin medication for their effect on the prevention of heterotopic bone formation after total hip arthroplasty. In all, 154 patients were included in the study. All patients underwent primary total hip arthroplasty due to osteoarthritis. Patients were randomly assigned to three different therapeutic groups. (a) The radiation group received a single radiation dose of 600 cGy between the 2nd and 4th postoperative day. (b) The indomethacin group received an oral application of indomethacin 2 × 50 mg per day from the 1st to 42nd postoperative day. (c) The control group received neither radiation nor indomethacin medication. There were significant group differences (P 〈 0.001). A least significant difference test (LSD) revealed that the mean of the control group was significantly different from that of the radiation and indomethacin groups. The 13 patients (8.4%) classified Brooker 3 or 4 were all in the control group. Again, this effect was statistically significant (chi-square, P 〈 0.001). In conclusion, this study demonstrated that both radiation and indomethacin therapy are effective in the prevention of postoperative HO. The choice for either one of the treatments has to be based on availability, contraindications, side-effects, practicability, standardisation and cost. Based on these considerations together with the results of this study, we currently use postoperative radiation with 600 cGy for all patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty.

Notes: Summary Guanethedine, a drug with sympathicolytic action was subjected to a thorough investigation of the therapeutic results in a clinical material selected on account of previous experiences. The domaine of guanethedine are chronic glaucomas with only slightly elevated intraocular tension which cannot be regulated with parasympathicomimetic agents. By means of a combination of 10% guanethedine with 0,5% pilocarpine hydrochloric particularly good results can be achieved. Further clinical experiences give information about individual features of a suitable employment in the therapy of glaucoma. Obviously, guanethedine exerts a tensionlowering effect on account of a diminution in the production of aqueous humour.

Notes: Abstract The velocity potential around two spheres moving perpendicularly to the line joining their centers is given by a series of spherical harmonics. The appropriateness of the truncation is evaluated by determining the residual normal surface velocity on the spheres. In evaluating the residual normal velocity, a recursive procedure is constructed to evaluate the spherical harmonics to reduce computational effort and truncation error as compared to direct transformation or numerical integration. We estimate the lift force coefficient for touching spheres to be 0.577771, compared to the most accurate earlier estimate of 0.51435 by Miloh (1977).
