Of particular concern is the classification of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), which may simply indicate inflammation, or may be the first indicator of serious pathology. Following ASCUS Pap smears with HPV screening will allow for a clarification of the best approach to treatment. A screening algorithm supported by a review of the literature is proposed.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICECervical cancer is a preventable disease caused by certain forms of HPV. Current screening protocols are based on the use of the Pap smear; and in areas where this test is routine and available, morbidity and mortality rates have dropped dramatically. Many women throughout the world and in underserved regions of the U. S. do not have adequate access to routine screening with Pap smear technology. As long as women continue to die needlessly of cervical cancer, more comprehensive and accessible screening methods must be explored. (Cutting the unnecessary worldwide and in the U. S.)

    Notes: We have investigated the evolution of the in-plane magnetic hysteresis behavior of Co/Cu(001) films (in the monolayer range) by means of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect. Shortly after the onset of long-range order, the deposition was stopped and the almost square hysteresis loop which resulted revealed a small coercive field (Hc=0.9 G) indicating a Curie temperature Tc close to room temperature. Further Co deposition in small increments showed a dramatic increase of Hc. An increase of 9% in the thickness resulted in a variation of Hc in the range 0.9 G〈Hc〈44.6 G to which a power law of the form (d/dc−1)α with α=0.58±0.07 could be attributed. This empirical fit suggests that the dramatic increase of the coercivity is thermodynamic in origin and related to the thickness dependence of the magnetization M.

    Notes: In a recent paper it was shown that rare gas ions form bound molecular states which decay by emission of radiation in the VUV. They are potential candidates as storage media for VUV lasers. In the present investigation the ions Kr+K, Kr+Cs, Xe+K, and Xe+Cs are produced by electron beam excitation of suitable gas mixtures with He as buffer gas. Studies of the reaction kinetics were performed for Kr+K. The rate constant for the reaction Kr++K+He was determined to be 2.8×10−30 cm3 s−1. Kr+K is strongly quenched by plasma electrons and by reaction with Kr. The fluorescence yield at intense excitation was determined to be about 5×10−2 VUV quanta per He+ ion.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of fcc FexNi1−x and FexCo1−x alloys grown on Cu(100) were investigated in an element-specific fashion. The technique employed was linear dichroism in photoemission, which by varying the chirality can also determine the magnetization axis. We observed a different behavior for the two alloys at Fe concentrations above 60%. At this concentration the FexNi1−x alloy shows a strong reduction of the Fe dichroism associated with the invar instability. This is in contrast to the FexCo1−x alloy, where the Fe dichroism stays essentially constant across the concentration. Despite these differences both systems show a change of the easy axis at roughly the same electron count. For small Fe concentrations the easy axis is in-plane along the [011] direction. This changes into the [001] direction at Fe63Ni37, which is at 0.7 excess electrons per atom when compared with Fe. This is different to the bulk, where a change occurs at Fe25Ni75. We find the easy axis change for FexCo1−x to occur at 49% Fe. This would be equivalent to 0.5 excess electrons when compared with Fe. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ionic rare gas alkali excimers Rg+A were produced by exciting Rg/A mixtures in a buffer gas atmosphere by means of an ion or electron beam. As a representative candidate the formation of Kr+K decaying at 135 nm was investigated. The rate constant k(He) for the main reaction Kr++K→Kr+K was determined varying the buffer gas density [He] between 1017 and 1020 cm−3. Values between k(He)=1×10−11 and 5×10−10 cm3 s−1 were observed. At high buffer gas densities the quantum yield ηq for the emission of the 135 nm radiation depends on the ratio [K]/[Kr]. At the optimum value, [K]/[Kr]=0.06, an absolute yield of ηq=1.5% was obtained. Up to a deposited energy of 3 mJ/cm3 the quantum yield is independent on the excitation density. For neon as buffer gas the rate constants k(Ne) are smaller by about a factor of 3, while the efficiency is only slightly less than for He. Kr+K is split into five fine structure states. The quenching of these states by krypton and buffer gas causes the low quantum yield.

    Notes: We have studied the effect of the dipolar magnetic coupling (also known as Néel coupling or "orange-peel" coupling) in tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) elements. With an in situ scanning tunneling microscope we directly accessed the roughness of the films and found a close correspondence between the values for the coupling fields determined by the magneto-optical Kerr effect and the ones computed on the basis of the measured morphology parameters. We confirm an increase of the dipole coupling between the magnetic layers with decreasing barrier thickness as predicted by the model. Deviations from the theoretical predictions are observed for the case of thinner soft magnetic layers, which can be explained by reduced magnetization in very thin films. We demonstrate the importance of dipolar coupling for understanding the magnetic behavior of TMR elements by comparing TMR curves for optimized and nonoptimized structures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
