    Notes: A novel type of ideal toroidal Alfvén eigenmode, localized in the low-shear core region of a tokamak plasma, is shown to exist, whose frequency is near the upper continuum of the toroidal Alfvén gap. This mode converts to a kinetic-type toroidal Alfvén eigenmode above a critical threshold that depends on aspect ratio, pressure gradient, and shear. Opposite to the usual ideal toroidal Alfvén eigenmode, this new mode is peaked in amplitude on the small-major-radius side of the plasma. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The operational limits observed in spherical tokamaks, notably the small tight aspect ratio tokamak (START) device [A. Sykes et al., Nucl. Fusion 32, 694 (1992)], are consistent with those found in conventional aspect ratio tokamaks. In particular the highest β achieved (∼40%) is consistent with an ideal magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) Troyon type limit, the upper limit on density is well described by the Greenwald density (πa2n¯e/Ip∼1) and the normalized current (Ip/aBt) is limited such that q95(approximately-greater-than)2. Stability calculations indicate scope for increasing both normalized β and normalized current beyond the values so far achieved, although wall stabilization is generally needed for low-n modes. In double null configurations current terminating disruptions occur at each of the operational boundaries, though the current quench tends to be slow at the density limit and disruptions at high β may be due to the low q. In early limiter START discharges, before the divertor coils were installed, disruptions rarely occurred. Instead internal reconnection events which have all the characteristics of a disruption except the current quench occurred. These various disruptive behaviors are explained in terms of a model in which helicity is conserved during the disruption. Due to the low toroidal field beam ions in START, and α particles in a ST power plant, are super-Alfvénic. This gives the possibility for toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) to occur and such modes are frequently observed in START neutral beam injection (NBI) discharges, but seem to be benign. The features of these observed TAEs are shown to be in agreement with MHD calculations.

    Notes: Experiments designed for generating internal transport barriers in the plasmas of the Joint European Torus [JET, P. H. Rebut et al., Proceedings of the 10th International Conference, Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion, London (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1985), Vol. I, p. 11] reveal cascades of Alfvén perturbations with predominantly upward frequency sweeping. These experiments are characterized by a hollow plasma current profile, created by lower hybrid heating and current drive before the main heating power phase. The cascades are driven by ions accelerated with ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH). Each cascade consists of many modes with different toroidal mode numbers and different frequencies. The toroidal mode numbers vary from n=1 to n=6. The frequency starts from 20 to 90 kHz and increases up to the frequency range of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes. In the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, a close correlation is found between the time evolution of the Alfvén cascades and the evolution of the Alfvén continuum frequency at the point of zero magnetic shear. This correlation facilitates the study of the time evolution of both the Alfvén continuum and the safety factor, q(r), at the point of zero magnetic shear and makes it possible to use Alfvén spectroscopy for studying q(r). Modeling shows that the Alfvén cascade occurs when the Alfvén continuum frequency has a maximum at the zero shear point. Interpretation of the Alfvén cascades is given in terms of a novel-type of energetic particle mode localized at the point where q(r) has a minimum. This interpretation explains the key experimental observations: simultaneous generation of many modes, preferred direction of frequency sweeping, and the absence of strong continuum damping. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. We derive the restricted optical-conductivity sum rule for a model with circulating orbital currents. It is shown that an unusual coupling of the vector potential to the interaction term of the model Hamiltonian results in a non-standard form of the sum rule. As a consequence, the temperature dependence of the restricted spectral weight could be compatible with existing experimental data for high-T c cuprates above the critical temperature T c . We extend our results to the superconducting state, and comment on the differences and analogies between these two symmetry-breaking phenomena.

    Notes: Abstract An explicit expression is obtained for the single-particle Green’s function of a 2D metallic system with attraction between carriers. It is shown that as a result of transverse phase fluctuations, this function is pole-free throughout the entire region of finite temperatures (both above and below the topological phase transition point) corresponding to a nonzero modulus of the complex order field describing the transition from a nonsuperconducting (in this case normal) state to a superconducting state, whose appearance in the 2D case is not accompanied by spontaneous breaking of charge symmetry.

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that the phase diagram of a 2D metal undergoing a superconducting transition consists of regions of a normal phase where the modulus of the order parameter is absent, an “anomalous normal” phase where the modulus of the order parameter is different from zero but the phase of the order parameter is a random quantity, and a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase. The characteristic temperatures of transitions between the phases and the behavior of the chemical potential as a function of the fermion density and temperature are found.

    Notes: Abstract A phase diagram for a 2D metal with variable carrier density has been derived. It consists of a normal phase, where the order parameter is absent: a so-called “abnormal normal” phase where this parameter is also absent but the mean number of composite bosons (bound pairs) exceeds the mean number of free fermions; a pseudogap phase where the absolute value of the order parameter gradually increases but its phase is a random value, and finally a superconducting (here Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless) phase. The characteristic transition temperatures between these phases are found. The chemical potential and paramagnetic susceptibility behavior as functions of the fermion density and the temperature are also studied. An attempt is made to qualitatively compare the resulting phase diagram with the features of underdoped high-T c superconducting compounds above their critical temperature.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of static fluctuations in the phase of the order parameter on the normal and superconducting properties of a 2D system with attractive four-fermion interaction is studied. Analytic expressions for the fermion Green’s function, its spectral density, and the density of states are derived in the approximation where the coupling between the spin and charge degrees of freedom is neglected. The resulting single-particle Green’s function clearly demonstrates a non-Fermi-liquid behavior. The results show that as the temperature increases through the 2D critical temperature, the widths of the quasiparticle peaks broaden significantly.

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that stochastic instability can arise in the amplification of a real multifrequency signal in resonant amplifiers with distributed interaction that are stable under the influence of a harmonic oscillation. Necessary conditions for the onset of chaos are determined analytically by means of running Lyapunov exponents. Specific results of numerical and analytic studies of the stability or orotron amplifiers are presented.
