Notes: A computational method for the prediction of spin trajectories in systems of two or more spins evolving under the influence of the static field, an applied radio frequency field, chemical shifts, spin–spin couplings, and magnetic dipolar relaxation has been described. The program has been tested to establish its correct operation by calculation of limiting cases with known solutions. It is shown that it is necessary to retain the nonsecular elements of the relaxation matrix in order to obtain correct results, primarily elements controlling cross relaxation between transverse components of magnetization of different spin states belonging to the same quantum number of the total magnetization along the axis of the static field. As a result of the retention of these terms, two unexpected features are predicted: frequency and phase shifts in spectra of two non-spin-coupled nuclei with relaxation rate comparable to frequency separation and unusually intense magnetizations in the locked state of two spins with the radio frequency applied at the center of the spectrum.

    Notes: Abstract A short H· · ·H intramolecular interaction was reported previously for an anhydride of syn-sesquinorbornene. The synthesis and structure of a such an anhydride with an additional five-membered dithiole ring has been investigated. While hydrogen atom positions are not accurately located, the 1.62 Å separation indicates this molecule is a candidate for the shortest H· · ·H interaction. Two cycloadducts of norbornadiene, which literature suggests might exhibit additional short interactions, are reported also; however, the isomers with minimal intramolecular interactions are the isolated products. C22H20O3S2, 3, crystallizes in P $$\bar 1$$ with a = 10.881(4), b = 13.712(8), C = 6.548(8) Å, α = 101.32(6), β = 107.49(5), γ = 90.49(4)°, D calc = 1.445 g cm−3, and Z = 2, C21H20O4Cl8, 5, in P21/n with a = 8.168(2), b = 13.488(4), c = 23.500(6) Å, β = 94.72(2)°, D calc = 1.597 g cm−3, and Z = 4, C21H28O4, 6, in P〉 $$\bar 1$$ with a = 12.667(2), b = 12.792(2), c = 12.540(2) Å, α = 113.51(1), β = 98.18(1), α = 74.39(1)°, D calc = 1.276 g cm−3, and Z = 4.

Notes: Summary Novel mixed-ligand cyanonitrosyl complexes of chromium(I), [Cr(NO)(CN)2(L)2(H2O)], (where L=2-, 3-, or 4-benzylpyridine, 2-(4-chlorobenzyl)pyridine, 2-, 3-, or 4-benzoylpyridine, 3-(4-methylbenzoyl)pyridine, or 2-, 3-, or 4-acetylpyridine) have been prepared by the interaction of potassium pentacyanonitrosylchromate(I) monohydrate, K3[Cr(NO)(CN)5]·H2O with L. The complexes, characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic measurements, e.s.r. and i.r. spectral studies, contain chromium(I) in a low-spind 5-configuration. An octahedral structure, where CN istrans to CN, L istrans to L, and NO istrans to water is proposed for all the complexes

Notes: Summary A new series of cyano-substituted nitrosylchromium(I) complexes having octahedral stereochemistry around the metal ion, and of general formula, [CrNO(CN)2(L)2(H2O)] (L =o-,m- andp-phenetidines oro-,m-, andp-anisidines) have been isolated in the solid state by interaction of potassium pentacy-anonitrosylchromate(I) monohydrate with the appropriately substituted aniline. The complexes, which have been characterised by elemental analysis, conductance, molecular weight determination, magnetic measurements, e.s.r. and i.r. spectral studies, contain chromium(I) in a low-spin d5-configuration.

Notes: Summary New compounds of chromium(I), from the interaction of potassium pentacyanonitrosylchromate(I) monohydrate, K3[CrNO(CN)5]·H2O with 2-, 3- and 4-aminopyridines, pyridine-2-hydrazide, 2(2-aminoethyl)pyridine and 4(2-aminoethyl)pyridine are described. The products possess the empirical formula, CrNO(CN)2(L)2, for which a cyano-bridged polymeric structure is proposed. Chromium(I) has a low-spin-d5 configuration in these complexes.

Notes: Microporous-membrane-based extractive product recovery in product-inhibited fermentations allows in situ recovery of inhibitory products in a nondispersive fashion. A tubular bioreactor with continuous strands of hydrophobic microporous hollow fibers having extracting solvent flowing in fiber lumen was utilized for yeast fermentation of glucose to ethanol. Yeast was effectively immobilized on the shell side in small lengths of chopped microporous hyrophilic hollow fibers. The beneficial effects of in situ dispersion-free solvent ex (oleyl alcohol and dibutyl phthalate) were demonstrated for a 300 g/L glucose substrate feed. Outlet glucose concentration dropped drastically from 123 to 41 g/L as solvent/ substrate flow ratio was increased from 0 to 3 at 9 mL/h of substrate flow rate with oleyl alcohol as extracting solvent. The significant productivity increase with in situ solvent extraction became more evident as solvent/ substrate flow ratio increased. A model of the locally integrated extractive bioreactor describes the observed fermentor performance quite well.
