Notes: Larval and metamorphosing fishes of the genus Vinciguerria (Photichthyidae) were sampled at two sites in the northern Indian Ocean: In the central Arabian Sea and on the continental Fhelf off Pakistan. The goal was to check how much the environment-specific rates of primary production and food density influence the fish larvae's nutritional condition. Using standard histological techniques the appearance of the liver, pancreas and mid-gut eitheliurn were judged qualitatively. To consider a varying starvation resistance due to the state of larval Bevelopment, oranogenesis was classified in five stages and histological condition was evaluated in each class separatePy. The results of this stage-specific analysis showed generally a decreasing frequency of poor nutritional condition with organic development. As the samples consisted of individuals in different developmental stages, a single stage was selected to compare the two samling sites with regard to the quantity of larvae that had been exposed to sufficient or insufficient food supply A higher portion of nearshore larvae was found to be in poor nutritional condition compared to offshore larvae of the same developmental stage.

Description / Table of Contents: After transplantation, a meniscus undergoes alterations in mechanical loading, which causes changes in its histological structure. We studied the degenerative effects on meniscus and tibial cartilage resulting from variations in the congruity or the isometric fixation of medial meniscus transplants. In three groups of five sheep each, the menisci were transplanted in three different ways, using the same operative approach. The menisci were evaluated 24 weeks after operation. In group 1, the meniscus was totally detached from its base at the capsule and refixed without changes in the congruity or isometry. This group provided the basic data. In group 2, the contralateral medial meniscus was turned upside down and transplanted. The reattachment was performed according to isometric conditions. With this technique the congruity of the tibial and femoral surface was modified. In group 3, the medial meniscus was reimplanted by choosing defined non-isometric fixation points for the anterior and posterior meniscal ligaments without changing the position of the corpus. For evaluation, the morphological alterations of meniscus and tibial cartilage were asessed by the Jackson score. The more distinct changes of the meniscus were assessed histologically by three criteria: surface cells, surface fibers and changes in the meniscus center. The highest degree of degenerative changes occurred in group 3 (score 4.5); however, considerable changes were also found in group 2 (score 3.5). Incongruous or non-isometric placement of a meniscal graft will lead to degeneration and failure of the graft.

Notes: Abstract The renal excretion of bilirubin conjugates was analysed in 22 newborns. Bilirubin monoconjugate was the only metabolite detectable in urine samples and its renal excretion correlated with the creatinine excretion rate (r=0.91). The renal clearance of bilirubin mono-conjugates in newborns ranged between 380 and 2160 ml/1.73 m2 per 24 h (median: 790). According to the present findings the renal function should be monitored in newborns and infants with conjugated hyperbilirubinaemia.

Notes: Abstract  Screening for fecal occult blood by means of guaiac tests has an unsatisfactory sensitivity for the detection of colorectal neoplasms. The immunological determination of human hemoglobin in feces has a higher sensitivity and specificity, but hemoglobin is degraded during its transport through the gastrointestinal tract. We compared the hemoglobin test to a newly developed immuno-chemiluminometric (ILMA) assay for quantifying the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex in feces which shows high stability against degradation. From each of 621 patients with gastrointestinal complaints before scheduled colonoscopy we collected two 1-ml samples from a single stool; there were no dietary restrictions. The sensitivity for detecting colorectal carcinomas proved 87% with hemoglobin. With the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex it was 87% at a cutoff level of 1.5 µg/g feces, 83% at 2.0 µg/g feces, and 78% at 2.5 and 3.0 µg/g feces. The sensitivity for detecting large adenomatous polyps was 54% with hemoglobin, 76% with the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex at a cutoff point of 1.5 µg/g feces, 73% with the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex at 2.0 and 2.5 µg/g feces, and 65% with the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex at 3.0 µg/g feces. The optimal cutoff point for the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex was estimated to be 2.0 µg/g stool. The specificity for hemoglobin (99%) was significantly higher than that for the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex at 2.0 µg/g feces (96%). Immunological determination of the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex in feces has a comparable sensitivity as the fecal hemoglobin assay for colorectal carcinomas and a significantly higher sensitivity for adenomatous polyps but a significantly lower specificity. Its use for colorectal cancer prevention is currently being evaluated in a screening study.
