Notes: Abstract Summer weather conditions along the west coast of Africa near 34 ° S, 18 ° E are investigated using doppler acoustic sounder profiles. Case studies were selected from a two-year record to form composite analyses over the diurnal cycle. The SE trade wind exhibited a low level jet at the level of the temperature inversion due to a sharp reversal in the thermal wind vector aloft. Mean wind speeds reached 14 m s−1 just before midnight as the surface and upper inversions strengthened. Seabreezes were categorised by the supporting gradient wind and found to have mean depths of 400 m, speeds of over 6 m s−1 at the 200 m level, and advance/retreat times of 09 hr and 16–20 hr. During seabreezes and weak on-shore gradient flow conditions, the thermal internal boundary layer (TIBL) was monitored with sounder transects in the first 12 km of the coastal zone. The growth height was observed to be 1:20 in the first 5 km and 1:50 farther inland. The sounder climatology, together with surface network and aerial survey results, illustrate the four-dimensional characteristics of trade winds and seabreezes near Cape Town.

Notes: Abstract The fruit of Actinidia chinensis, a diploid relative of kiwifruit, showed an increased rate of ripening in response to the application of exogenous ethylene. Moreover, late in ripening the fruit produced a burst of ethylene biosynthesis. Thus ripening is climacteric, and there is a clear temporal separation of ethylene sensitivity and ethylene production. RNase protection assays were used to monitor transcript levels of ethylene biosynthetic genes during fruit development and ethylene-induced ripening. The application of exogenous ethylene correlated with increased transcript levels for three different S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) synthetase genes and for the 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) oxidase gene family. Transcription of an ACC synthase gene was not affected by exogenous ethylene. However, ACC synthase transcript levels increased during subsequent ethylene production by the fruit, consistent with this being the control step for the onset of climacteric ethylene production. ACC oxidase transcripts increased significantly both prior to and during climacteric ethylene production, while only one of the three SAM synthetase transcripts was induced during the late ethylene burst. We propose that the regulation of SAM synthetase transcripts by ethylene may occur as part of the methionine salvage pathway.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the electron-phonon decoupling in Neutron-Transmutation Doped (NTD) Germanium thermistors below 50 mK, and measured a characteristic time constant of this phenomenon. We will discuss how our decoupling model accounts for observed non-linearities in I–V characteristics of NTD Ge and for the time structure of phonon pulses detected in a Ge crystal operated at 20 mK.
