Notes: This article examines union influenced employers’ recruitment practices in the light of a recent Court of Appeal case. It argues that unions need to acknowledge traditional practices can, even unintentionally, be racist and sexist and that in order to defend union influence, those practices must change.

Notes: We consider private information a commodity, of value to both the information holder and the information seeker. Hence, a customer can be enticed to trade his/her private information with a business in exchange for compensation. In this article, we propose to apply utility theory to allow each participant to express the value they place on each private datum and, separately, on combinations of data. The PrivacyPact protocol transmits messages that comprise possible exchanges. Each participant is prevented from making offers that necessarily have lower utility for the other partner than previous ones. The protocol is complete in that if an exchange exists that is acceptable to both, it will be found as long as neither partner exits the negotiation early. While the space of possible offers grows exponentially on the number of negotiable items, experimentation with simple strategies indicates that negotiations can converge relatively quickly.

Notes: This paper argues that workplace learning is a problematic activity that may not result in the celebration of employee empowerment and autonomy that is often claimed but in the reverse: the entrenchment of existing power relations. It argues for an understanding of workplace learning within a broader economic and social context and for researchers and adult educators to acknowledge their historic responsibilities to argue for socially responsible adult education.

Notes: Abstract Wos has identified the problem of recomputing redundant information in the general setting of automated reasoning. We consider this problem in the setting of logic programming where we are given a formula and a goal and asked to find the instances of the goal that follow from the formula. We can use a proof procedure to find the result. The procedure exhibits redundancy when it finds two results such that one either duplicates or is more specific than the other. We introduce the foothold format, a refinement of linear resolution that admits fewer duplicate proofs than Loveland's popular MESON format. The duplicates arise when reasoning by cases. It leads to proof procedures that compute fewer duplicate substitutions. In some of our examples all duplication is eliminated. The foothold refinement depends on a simple condition that can be checked quickly, and can detect redundancy before the proof is completely generated. This is important from a practical point of view, since the earlier redundancy is detected, the more unnecessary work can be avoided. For some examples the speedup is exponential. We show that the elimination of redundancy also applies to SLI resolution, a procedure for processing disjunctive logic programs.

Notes: Abstract A given binary resolution proof, represented as a binary tree, is said to be minimal if the resolutions cannot be reordered to generate an irregular proof. Minimality extends Tseitin"s regularity restriction and still retains completeness. A linear-time algorithm is introduced to decide whether a given proof is minimal. This algorithm can be used by a deduction system that avoids redundancy by retaining only minimal proofs and thus lessens its reliance on subsumption, a more general but more expensive technique. Any irregular binary resolution tree is made strictly smaller by an operation called Surgery, which runs in time linear in the size of the tree. After surgery the result proved by the new tree is nonstrictly more general than the original result and has fewer violations of the regular restriction. Furthermore, any nonminimal tree can be made irregular in linear time by an operation called Splay. Thus a combination of splaying and surgery efficiently reduces a nonminimal tree to a minimal one. Finally, a close correspondence between clause trees, recently introduced by the authors, and binary resolution trees is established. In that sense this work provides the first linear-time algorithms that detect minimality and perform surgery on clause trees.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the general topic of recognizing the plan of a user, to include a representation of the user's plans as part of a user model. We focus on extending the coverage of plan recognition, by allowing for additional detail in the user's plan beyond fixed specifications of possible plans in a system's library. We provide procedures for handling two distinct extensions: recognizing temporal constraints from the user and admitting novel information. We conclude by commenting on the importance of these extensions when including plans in a user model in order to enhance communication between the system and the user.
