    Notes: Histamine has been implicated, inter alia, in mechanisms underlying arousal, exploratory behaviour and emotionality. Here, we investigated behavioural and neurochemical parameters related to these concepts, including open-field activity, rotarod performance and anxiety, as well as brain acetylcholine and 5-HT concentrations of mice deficient for the histidine decarboxylase (HDC) gene. These mice are unable to synthesize histamine from its precursor histidine. The HDC-knockout mice showed reduced exploratory activity in an open-field, but normal habituation to a novel environment. They behaved more anxious than the controls, as assessed by the height–fear task and the graded anxiety test, a modified elevated plus-maze. Furthermore, motor coordination on the rotarod was superior to controls. Biochemical assessments revealed that the HDC-knockout mice had higher acetylcholine concentrations and a significantly higher 5-HT turnover in the frontal cortex, but reduced acetylcholine levels in the neostriatum. These results are suggestive of important interactions between neuronal histamine and these site-specific neurotransmitters, which may be related to the behavioural changes found in the HDC-deficient animals.

    Notes: Goldfish Carassius auratus L., were held for 1 month on one of four different photoperiods. In those groups with diel variations of serum cortisol and thyroxine (approximately 60%) the variations were entrained to the photoperiod; peak titres occurred around light onset, minimum titres at light offset. Fish held on two of the photoperiod regimes had diel variations in serum protein, however, the pattern was not consistent in relation to any aspect of the photoperiod.

    Notes: Fishes, in general, have several advantages as vertebrate models for basic brain function. They are phylogenetically closer than mammals to the basic vertebrate blueprint and thus allow behavioural and neurological studies of fundamental brain systems without the interaction of more recently evolved functions. Further, the absence of a highly developed telencephalon allows ready access to many structures without cerebral interference. A disadvantage of working with most fishes is, however, the relatively small size of the brain that often hinders or precludes the use of many standard neurological techniques. In contrast, a group of chondrichthians, the stingrays, Dasyatoidea, has a brain size rivaling mammalian rodent models. Of particular interest to our research, stingrays, like mammals, have a large, complex, three-lobed cerebellum. However, in the yellow stingray these lobes are completely separated. Thus, the lobes can be individually manipulated to examine behavioural correlates of specific lobes. For example, ablation of the centre lobe (also known as anterior caudal lobule) causes a fixed-pattern hyperactivity. Yellow stingrays are abundant in many areas, they are hardy, and tolerate anaesthesia and the surgical procedures well. A more complete elucidation of cerebellar function awaits further physical and pharmacological ablative studies but the potential for these animals as vertebrate models of cerebellar-controlled behaviour is clear.

    Notes: Small concrete artificial reef modules (hemisphere-shaped, approximately 1.3 m diameter, 1 m high) were placed at two sites, eight modules per site. The sites were in 7 m and 21 m of water, 1.6 km apart, off the coast of southeast Florida, USA. The reefs were censused monthly for fish over a 19-month period. Species, number of fish, and estimated total length of each individual were recorded by divers using SCUBA. After the monthly census, all fish were removed from the reefs with a piscicide. A total of 88 species were recorded in the study, with significantly greater diversity on the deep reefs (monthly mean of 7.6 versus 3.0 shallow, P 〈 0.001, anova). There were also significantly more biomass (calculated from length), and more large fish (〉5 cm) on the reefs at 21 m than at 7 m (P 〈 0.001). There were more small fish at the shallow site (P 〈 0.05). Although it is not clear what variable(s) associated with the two depths is responsible for the differences, these results highlight the potential differences in artificial reef and ambient environment interactions within a localized area.

    Notes: Summary Medaka were maintained on a 16∶8 light-dark cycle and fed once daily on one of 5 different feeding schedules. The daily rhythm of agonistic behavior rapidly entrained to the scheduled feeding time and maintained this entrainment during a 3-day starvation period. In contrast the daily rhythms of egg laying and courtship stayed entrained to the L:D cycle regardless of the feeding schedule. Thus, temporal integration of this fish with its daily environment can involve multistimuli which concurrently and differentially entrain externally expressed circadian systems.
