    Notizen: An ion beam propagating through a magnetized plasma cylinder containing K+ positive ions, electrons and SF6− negative ions drives electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) waves to instability via Cerenkov interaction. Two EIC wave modes are present, the SF6− and K+ modes. The frequencies and the growth rate of both the unstable negative ion and the positive ion modes increase, with increasing ε (=nSF6−/nK+), the relative density of negative ions. The frequencies of both the unstable modes (SF6− and K+) increase, with the magnetic field. The growth rate of both the unstable modes (SF6− and K+) scales as the one-third power of the beam density. The real frequency of both the unstable modes increases as almost the square root of the beam energy. Numerical calculations of the growth rate and modes frequencies have been carried out for the parameters of the experiment of Song et al. [Phys. Fluids B 1, 2316 (1989)] and the results are in good agreement with the experimental observations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The Tripathi–Liu [Phys. Plasmas 1, 990 (1994)] model of magnetic-field generation due to an amplitude-modulated laser in a plasma is revisited. At plasma resonance, where modulation frequency equals the plasma frequency, significant enhancement in the magnetic field is seen. The magnetic field is found to scale directly with laser intensity and plasma frequency, while scaling inversely with laser spot size. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A density-modulated electron beam propagating through a plasma cylinder drives electrostatic lower hybrid waves to instability via Cerenkov interaction. The lower hybrid wave instability has the largest growth rate γ when the frequency and wave number of the modulation are comparable to that of the unstable wave. The growth rate of the instability increases with the modulation index Δ and is maximized for Δ=1. For Δ=0, γ turns out to be ∼0.43×107 sec−1. The growth rate scales as the one-third power of the beam density. The real frequency of the unstable wave increases as almost the square root of the beam voltage. The results of the theory are applied to explain some of the experimental observations of Chang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 35, 285 (1975)]. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A short pulse laser propagating through a preformed plasma exerts a radial ponderomotive force on the electrons and creates a low density plasma channel via ambipolar diffusion. If the radial intensity profile of the laser beam is clamped, i.e., assumed Gaussian in r with fixed half-width r0, then closed form analytic solution of the evolution of plasma density in the channel is obtained in the perturbation approximation, Δn(very-much-less-than)n0, where Δn is the modification in electron density over its equilibrium value n0, by solving the linearized equation of continuity. The relevance of the channel for low spot size beams self-focusing is examined. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The density variation of plasmas produced by irradiation with laser beams on spherical targets has been studied in the steady state. This study used an adiabatic plasma model with self-generated magnetic fields included in a phenomenological manner. The density variation with a radial coordinate is found to have a steep rise through the critical density, which reaches a plateau in the overdense region, then a density minimum and finally, a rise. This variation has been compared with experimentally observed values in earlier works and is found to be in fairly good agreement. The variation of plateau density with the intensity of the laser is also compared with the experimentally observed variation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract Electron density for ions from a semi-statistical model has been obtained and used to calculate the potential at the nucleus and the diamagnetic susceptibility. We have taken the quantum mechanical density close to the nucleus and have matched it with the statistical density at some distancer 0. The electron density is found to be finite close to the nucleus and exponentially decreasing at large distances. Moreover, the kinetic energy density goes to zero close to nucleus in agreement with the Hartree-Fock (HF) result. The potential at the nucleus converges and is in fair agreement with the HF value. The diamagnetic susceptibility increases with increasing atomic number.
