Notes: Abstract Using the fluid model for the nonlinear response of ions, we have studied the nonlinear scattering of an electromagnetic ion cyclotron wave off the ion acoustic wave in a plasma. The low frequency nonlinearity arises through the parallel ponderomotive force on ions and the high frequency nonlinearity arises through the nonlinear current density of ions. For a typical nonisothermal plasma (T e/T i∼10) the threshold for this instability in a uniform plasma is ∼1mW/cm2. At power densities ≳102 W/cm2, the growth rate for backscatter turns out to be ∼104s−1.

Notes: Abstract The presence of an intense Gaussian laser beam gives rise to a ponderomotive force on electrons in a collisionless plasma, leading to a redistribution of electron density along the wave-front and consequently to an intensity dependent dielectric constant which saturates with increasing intensity. The intensity dependent dielectric constant is responsible for beam propagation in an oscillatory waveguide. It is seen that (i) a beam of radiusr 0 less thanr 0min (≃c/ω p) cannot be focused in the plasma regardless of its power, (ii) minimum dimension of oscillatory waveguide increases with increasing power of the beam. Similar results are also obtained for collisional plasma where nonlinearity arises due to nonuniform heating and consequent redistribution of carriers.

Notes: The parametric decay of a Langmuir wave into a Langmuir wave and an ion acoustic wave is studied in a plasma slab. The coupled mode equations are solved using the perturbation technique which yields a dispersion relation for the parametric instability. The growth rate of the instability is found to increase with the width of the plasma slab and approaches the value for an infinite uniform plasma.

Notes: The modulational instability of a lower hybrid pump is studied in a plasma slab. The coupled mode equations are solved using perturbation technique and growth rate for the four-wave process is obtained. It is found that the instability is possible only for quasimode frequency ω〉ωpi. The growth rate increases with pump frequency and mode number, and is quite significant for moderate pump fields.

Notes: Strong azimuthal magnetic field, Bs θ(circumflex), generated in an intense laser plasma interaction, has a focusing effect on the laser. The rays having E⊥Bs propagate as an X mode with a refractive index maximum on the axis and are focused. However, rays with E(parallel)Bs propagate unaffected by the magnetic field. The relativistic mass nonlinearity reinforces additional focusing on the laser. Under the combined effect of both focusing mechanisms a linearly polarized laser emerges with a reduced spot size and elliptical cross section. This process may provide a diagnostic means for measuring the azimuthal magnetic field. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have used the modal expansion of the wave function in the discontinuity region based on the superposition principle together with a mode-matching technique to investigate the transmission characteristics of semiconductor quantum wire structures with discontinuities. Our calculations compare quite well with published results for the theoretical transmission coefficient and experimental conductance of a T-stub and split-gate geometry, respectively. We apply this technique to analyze the effect of right-angle bends in narrow quantum wires which show strong resonant behavior due to the presence of discontinuities in this geometry.

Notes: A laser beam propagating at an angle to the density gradient in an expanding plasma is susceptible to filamentation instability. For a linear density profile and self consistent temperature and expansion velocity profiles, the amplitude of the perturbation grows as an Airy function with the distance of propagation. The characteristic growth length decreases with the size of perturbation and the ratio of expansion velocity to sound velocity. It increases the angle laser k vector makes with the density gradient. Moreover, the growth length does not always increase with θ0: it depends on vb(0). The spatial growth of perturbation of larger size starts occurring deeper into the plasma.

Notes: Population inversion in a large band gap semiconductor, e.g., ZnSe or ZnS, could be achieved by irradiating it with a picosecond Nd: glass laser of power density exceeding 30 GW/cm2. The laser field induces valence band electrons to tunnel to the conduction band, creating electron-hole plasma. The electron-hole recombination produces coherent radiation at ultraviolet wavelength. Nonlocal effects have a significant influence over the gain. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The excitation of electromagnetic modes in a cylindrical plasma column by an electron beam is considerably improved by the introduction of a sheath helix inside the vacuum chamber. The helix slows down the whistler mode and relaxes the requirements on the beam energy for the generation of a given frequency.

Notes: A nonlocal theory of parametric decay of an upper-hybrid wave into an ion-acoustic wave and an upper-hybrid sideband reveals that an axially symmetric pump tends to excite axially symmetric modes. The growth rate falls off with the frequency ω0 of the pump and the azimuthal model number l of the decay waves. In cases where ion and electron temperatures are nearly equal the decay process goes over to nonlinear ion Landau damping; however, the behavior of the growth rate with ω0 and l remains the same. The resonant and nonresonant decay via ion-cyclotron modes also show similar behavior, although with a smaller growth rate.
