Notes: Abstract The spatial and temporal development of the temperature and the electron density of a spark produced in He at 10 atm in the focus of a lens by a mode-locked laser pulse having only 1.5 mJ energy have been investigated. Measuring the absolute intensity of the continuum radiation emitted by the spark and the broadening of a Heii-line it can be concluded that local thermodynamic equilibrium has established 15 ns after the initiation of the plasma. At this time a temperature of 65000 K and a maximum electron density of 1.4·1019 cm−3 was found with a pressure of 20 times the initial gas pressure. These values are in agreement with the values required for an expansion model given in an earlier work basing on a radiation mechanism which explains the stepwise growth of a laser spark under the influence of a train of mode-locked pulses.

Notes: Abstract Investigations of laser sparks in N2 and He produced by a mode-locked laser were made with the help of a streak camera. An expansion away and towards the laser depending on the gas pressure was found. The measured expansion velocity of the spark is described by a model based on a radiation mechanism.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate (MDP) and 47Ca were studied in three patients with osteoporosis, three patients with hyperparathyroidism, and two patients with osteomalacia. The activities of 99mTc-MDP were recorded in the lumbar spine, paravertebral soft tissues, and in venous blood samples for 1 h after injection. The results were submitted to deconvolution analysis to determine regional bone accumulation rates. 47Ca kinetics were analysed by a linear two-compartment model quantitating short-term mineral exchange, exchangeable bone calcium, and calcium accretion. The 99mTc-MDP accumulation rates were small in osteoporosis, greater in hyperparathyroidism, and greatest in osteomalacia. No correlations were obtained between 99mTc-MDP bone accumulation rates and the results of 47Ca kinetics. However, there was a significant relationship between the level of serum alkaline phosphatase and bone accumulation rates (R=0.71, P〈0.025). As a result deconvolution analysis of regional 99mTc-MDP kinetics in dynamic bone scans might be useful to quantitate osseous tracer accumulation in metabolic bone disease. The lack of correlation between the results of 99mTc-MDP kinetics and 47Ca kinetics might suggest a preferential binding of 99mTc-MDP to the organic matrix of the bone, as has been suggested by other authors on the basis of experimental and clinical investigations.

Notes: Summary From 1973–1982, 41 Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomies were performed for benign diseases in our surgical department. In spite of good primary results, secondary anastomotic stricture with jaundice, cholangitis, and parenchyme destruction were severe problems. Localization of biliary obstruction and quantitative analysis of parenchyme function was done by computerized hepatobiliary sequence scintigraphy. Using this new method, we obtained a good evaluation of bile flow conditions in all 19 patients we examined.
