    Notes: The properties of the Karhunen–Loéve (KL) expansion of the derivative ux(x) of an inhomogeneous random process possessing viscous boundary-layer behavior are studied in relation to questions of efficient representation for numerical Galerkan schemes for computational simulation of turbulence. Eigenfunctions and eigenvalue spectra are calculated for the randomly forced one-dimensional Burgers' model of turbulence. Convergence of the expansion of ux is much slower than convergence of the expansion of u(x), and direct expansion of ux is not significantly more efficient than differentiating the expansion of u. The ordered eigenvalue spectrum of ux is proportional to the square of the order parameter times the eigenvalue spectrum of u. The underlying cause of slow convergence is the earlier onset of locally sinusoidal behavior of the KL eigenfunctions when the expansion is performed over the entire domain of the solution.

    Notes: The rate of convergence of the Karhunen–Loève expansion of an inhomogeneous, instantaneous random field is compared with that of Fourier expansion in relation to the Reynolds number. The model turbulence is generated by solving the Burgers' equation with random forcing. The coefficients of the Fourier expansion are determined by a Galerkin solution scheme. The results show obvious superiority of the Karhunen–Loève expansion, especially for high Reynolds number flows.

    Notes: Characteristics of the Karhunen–Loéve expansion of a strongly inhomogeneous random process possessing small viscous length scales and a large outer scale have been investigated in relation to the application of the expansion to turbulent flow fields. Monte Carlo simulations of a randomly forced Burgers' equation with zero velocity boundary conditions generate the random process numerically and the Karhunen–Loéve (KL) eigenfunctions and the eigenvalue spectra are computed for different Reynolds numbers. The eigenfunctions possess thin viscous boundary layers at the walls and are independent of Reynolds number in the core, where the random process is quasihomogeneous. The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the outer, large scale motions obey a principle of Reynolds number similarity. Eigenvalue spectra contain much of the energy in the first few modes, but they are as broad as ordinary trigonometric power spectra. The rate at which the expansion converges to within 90% of the total energy decreases with increasing Reynolds numbers and the expansion of the mean plus the fluctuation converges more rapidly than the expansion of the fluctuation alone.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental study was made of the flow over a backward-facing step. Excitations were given to separated flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin slit near the separation line. The Reynolds number based on the step height (H) varied 13000 ⩽ Re H ⩽ 33000. Effect of local forcing on the flow structure was scrutinized by altering the forcing amplitude (0 ⩽ A 0 ⩽ 0.07) and forcing frequency (0 ⩽ St H ⩽ 5.0). Small localized forcing near the separation edge enhanced the shear-layer growth rate and produced a large roll-up vortex at the separation edge. A large vortex in the shear layer gave rise to a higher rate of entrainment, which lead to a reduction in reattachment length as compared to the unforced flow. The normalized minimum reattachment length (x r )min/x x0 was obtained at St θ ≅ 0.01. The most effective forcing frequency was found to be comparable to the shedding frequency of the separated shear layer.

    Notes: Abstract  A new type of an array of pressure sensors, composed of PVDF (polyvinylidenefluoride), was devised and evaluated. In order to obtain the system transfer function of the PVDF system, a dynamic calibration was performed utilizing the signal from a 1/8 inch B&K microphone as input. The time history of the unsteady pressure was then reconstructed from the output of the sensor by using this transfer function. The reconstructed pressure signals showed good agreement with the reference signal in both temporal and spectral sense. This sensor was then used to measure the wall pressure fluctuations in a two-dimensional turbulent channel flow. Various statistical moments were obtained from the measurement data set. Comparison of these quantities with the existing studies demonstrated satisfactory agreement. These tests give credence to the relevance and reliability of this sensor for applications in more complicated turbulent flows.

    Notes: Abstract A new type of flow visualization method utilizing a smoke-wire, a high-speed camera with high framing rates and a laser light sheet was employed to delineate the unsteady processes of large-scale vortices in the separated shear layer about a blunt-faced flat plate at Re H  = 560. The sequential images showed that the unsteady behavior of large-scale vortices in the separated shear layer varies as the shedding phases of large-scale vortices alter. Particularly, at a certain phase, a vortex-merging process between the two neighboring large-scale vortices took place.

    Notes: Abstract  A laboratory water channel experiment was made of the separated flow over a backward-facing step. The flow was excited by a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a separation line. The slit was connected to a cavity in which water was forced through a rigid pipe by a scotch-yoke system. The Reynolds number based on the step height (H) was fixed at Re H =1200. The forcing frequency was varied in the range 0.305?St H ?0.955 at the forcing amplitude A 0=0.3. Time-averaged flow measurements were made by a LDV system, especially in the recirculating region behind the backward-facing step. To characterize the large-scale vortex evolution due to the local forcing, flow visualizations were performed by a dye tracer method with fluorescent ink. The vortex amalgamation process was captured at the effective forcing frequency (St H =0.477) for laminar separation. This vortex merging process enhances flow mixing, which leads to the shortening of the reattachment length.

    Notes: Abstract  An experimental study was made of turbulent separated flows over a backward-facing step. A local forcing was given to the separated flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin slit near the separation line. To produce a spanwise-varying local forcing at the separation edge, a banded thin tape covered the slit. Effects of the spanwise-varying local forcings on the separated flow were scrutinized by altering the spatially banded blocking width (w) and the open slit distance (g). An optimal value of w/g was sought, which led to the minimum reattachment length (x R ). The effect of spanwise-varying local forcing on x R was found to be slight compared to the case of two-dimensional forcing (w=0). The experiment was made at Re H =33000 and A 0=0.018 by changing the forcing frequency (0?St H ?1.0).

    Notes: Abstract An experimental study is made of turbulent axisymmetric cavity flow. The flow configuration consists of a sudden expansion and contraction pipe joint. In using the LDV system, in an effort to minimize refraction of laser beams at the curved interface, a refraction correction formula for the Reynolds shear stress is devised. Three values of the cavity length (L = 300, 600 and 900 mm) are chosen, and the cavity height (H) is fixed at 55 mm. Both open and closed cavities are considered. Special attention is given to the critical case L = 600 mm, where the cavity length L is nearly equal to the reattachment length of the flow. The Reynolds number, based on the inlet diameter (D = 110 mm) is 73,000. Measurement data are presented for the static wall pressure, mean velocity profiles, vorticity thickness distributions, and turbulence quantities.
