    Notes: Chromosome substitution lines of the wheat variety ‘Cappelle Desprez’ into ‘Chinese Spring’ were tested for drought tolerance in growth chambers in the Martonvásár phytotron. Three different moisture regimes were created: E1, fully irrigated control; E2, mid-season water stress (preanthesis); and E3, terminal water-stress during grain filling. Data were analysed to estimate the chromosomal location of the genes controlling relative water-content (RWC), relative water-loss (RWL), drought-susceptibility index (DSI) and phenotypic stability in each substitution line. Simultaneous consideration indicated that most of the genes controlling these characters are located on chromosomes 1A, 5A, 7A,4B, 5B, 1D, 3D and 5D.

    Notes: Frost resistance was studied in SC4 seedlings generated by self pollination from 31 (SC4) plants of ‘GK Csongor’ winter wheat variety derived from resistance than ‘GK Csongor’. With respect to percentage survival, one family possessed significantly higher frost resistance as compared to the control at a temperature of -13°C In the case of regrowth analysis, 22 of the 31 families showed less growing capacity and 5 proved to be significantly better than ‘GK Csongor’. According to both testing methods, one family showed significantly higher frost resistance than the control.

    Notes: The genetic distances between two cultivated wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties (Martonvásári 9, Martonvásári 15), a Martonvásári 9 line possessing the crossability gene krl, and 21 accessions of T. timopheevi Zhuk. and T. araraticum Jakubz. were estimated, based on agro-morphological, physiological and biochemical analysis of data. Cluster analysis based on Mahalanobis' D2 values was applied. All 21 accessions of T. timopheevi and T. araraticum could be classified into eight clusters. Clusters I and II consisted of all the T. timopheevi, while T. araraticum was located in six clusters. Discriminant analysis was applied to test significant differences between cluster pairs. The genetic distance (GD) based on the electrophoretic data of gliadins indicated two types of electrophoregrams in T. timopheevvi, distinguished as groups A and B. T. araraticum accessions were variable as regards the spectra. Mean, minimum and maximum GD were estimated within and between different wheat groups based on acid polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

    Notes: The genetic determination of the plant regeneration ability of tissue cultures arising from immature embryos was studied using a ‘Chinese Spring’/‘Cheyenne’ substitution series. Plant regeneration proved to be polygenically determined. In tile current experiment the chromosomes 7B, 7D and ID were found to be effective, although the possibility of other chromosome effects cannot be excluded.

    Notes: Investigations were carried out under phytotronic conditions to study the effect of daylength on the frost resistance of a ‘Chinese Spring’/‘Cheyenne’ chromosome substitution series. The frost resistance of the 5A, 7A, 4B, 5B, 1D and 5D lines was significantly better when raised and hardened with long-day (16 h) rather than short-day (8h) illumination. The frost resistance-increasing effect of daylength could be demonstrated after freezing lines 5A and 5D at both - 10°C and -12°C.An increase in the duration of illumination in the course of preliminary growth and hardening promoted the development of a higher level of frost resistance. This positive effect was most pronounced for chromosome substitution lines, where the frost resistance was significantly better than that of ‘Chinese Spring’ even with normal daylengths.

    Notes: The relationship between frost tolerance and abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation was studied in callus cultures of three wheat cultivars differing in the level of frost-tolerance, and of the 5A and 5D chromosome substitution lines from the frost-tolerant variety ‘Cheyenne’ into frost-sensitive ‘Chinese Spring’. Following cold hardening, the increase in ABA level in the calli of the two frost tolerant cultivars was significantly higher than in those of the frost-susceptible cultivar. Similarly, in 5A and 5D substitution lines, significantly higher ABA levels were detected than in the recipient ‘Chinese Spring’. One week-long ABA treatment at 26 °C induced a significantly higher level of frost tolerance than that achieved by cold hardening, irrespective of the frost sensitivity of the examined genotypes.

    Notes: The genetic control of frost resistance was studied in callus cultures using some of the chromosome substitution lines of the variety ‘Cheyenne’ into ‘Chinese Spring’. The survival of the calli derived from immature embryos was studied with triphenyltet-razolium chloride (TTC) and fluorescein diacetate (5DA) methods after hardening and freezing at a temperatures of -7 °C, -9 °C, -11 °C, -13 °C, and –15 °C. The donor ‘Cheyenne’ and the substitution lines 5A and 5D proved to be more frost resistant than the recipient ‘Chinese Spring1. These results are well correlated with the previously published studies when seedlings were tested under controlled conditions. Based on these results the tissue culture technique seems to be useful for testing varieties and lines for different levels of frost resistance and even for mutant selection.

    Notes: Abstract  Homozygous deletion lines of wheat for 5AL, generated in the variety ‘Chinese Spring’, were tested for flowering time without vernalization and for frost resistance after cold hardening. It was found that the Vrn-A1 gene for vernalization requirement mapped between breakpoints 0.68 and 0.78, whilst the frost resistance gene Fr1 was flanked by deletion breakpoints 0.67 and 0.68. This confirms previous evidence that these genes are linked but are not the pleiotropic effect of a single gene. A comparison between the physical and genetic maps for Vrn-A1 and Fr1 shows that the linear order is identical. These results indicate that cytogenetically based physical maps of Vrn-A1 and Fr1 loci, together with genetic maps, could be useful in the further study of genome synteny and in elaborating a gene cloning strategy.

    Notes: Summary Stress-induced free amino acid accumulation in the presence of 0.7 M mannitol has been compared in tissue cultures of moderately stress-tolerant ‘Chinese Spring’ and stress-sensitive ‘Cappelle Desprez’ cultivars and in disomic chromosome substitution lines of ‘Cappelle Desprez’ into ‘Chinese Spring’. The profile of amino acid accumulation was different in the two parents. The amino acid concentration of the substitution lines belonging to the A, B and D genomes, respectively, altered characteristically under stress condition. The ‘Cappelle Desprez’ chromosomes associated with non-ionic osmotic stress-induced free amino acid accumulation were 5A and 5D.
