Notes: Summary The eyes of 9 rabbits were irradiated by light from an electric welding arc. The rabbits were killed 12 hours after irradiation. In the retina the following enzymes were histochemically demonstrated: lactic dehydrogenase, α-glycero-phosphate dehydrogenase, Β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, ethanolic dehydrogenase, non-specific esterase. Of these enzymes, only lactic dehydrogenase and non-specific esterase showed a strong reaction. Histological examination after irradiation showed only a light oedema of the retina. In contrast to this, the lactic dehydrogenase showed general and circumscribed reduction of enzyme activity. This examination has shown that enzyme histochemistry (especially the demonstration of lactic dehydrogenase) offers the possibility of detecting an early stage of retinal damage in which the histological findings are negative or difficult to interpret.
