Notes: Terahertz radiation emitted by coherent phonons in Te, PbTe, and CdTe has been investigated by using an ultrafast photoconductive sampling detector. Pronounced coherent radiation originating from the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon oscillations of infrared-active modes was observed for all samples, irrespective of the different crystal structures. In addition, spectral dips at the transverse optical (TO) phonon frequencies, which could not be explained by absorption in the emitting volume, were observed for all samples. The model calculations indicate that the emission rate of the radiation into the air to that into the dielectric (semiconductor) side is scaled by 1/{1+(nd2+κd2)nd3} (nd and κd are the real and imaginary part of the complex refractive index, respectively). Thus, the enhanced emission of radiation by the coherent LO phonons and the spectral dips at the TO phonon frequencies can be explained by the respective increase and reduction of the emission efficiency of the radiation to the air due to the small and large value of the dielectric constant |εd(ω)|=nd2+κd2 near the LO and TO phonon frequencies, respectively. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ultrashort electromagnetic waves (600 fs width) from superconducting YBCO thin films have been observed by irradiating current-biased samples with femtosecond optical laser pulses (80 fs width). The Fourier component of the pulse extends up to ∼2 THz. The characteristics of the radiation are studied and the radiation mechanism is ascribed to the ultrafast supercurrent modulation by the laser pulses, which induce the nonequilibrium superconductivity. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Interference of impulsively excited coherent phonons in semimetals has been studied by using a double-pulse pump–probe technique. Enhancement of the oscillation amplitude of an A1g mode is observed when the separation time of the double-pulse is matched to the period of the phonon oscillation, and a cancellation is observed when the separation time is adjusted to half the period of the phonon oscillation. The amplitude after the second pulse shows a sinusoidal dependence as a function of the separation time, and this dependence is explained in terms of a superposition of two coherent phonon oscillations. In addition, not only the A1g mode but also an Eg mode have been observed by electro-optic sampling. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A hypertrophic hemangioma of a 6-month-old girl was studied electron-microscopically. Hypertrophic hemangioma is characterized by few patent vessels, high cellularity, local aggressiveness, occasional mitotic figures and frequent recurrence alter operation. The ultrastructural examination showed the tumor to be composed of three types of cells: endothelial cells, pericytes and phagocytic fibroblasts.

Notes: Low molecular weight organic acids are widespread and reactive in soils, but their distribution among mineral horizons is uncertain. We investigated the distribution of low molecular weight aliphatic carboxylic acids (LACAs) in three Japanese forest soils, two Acid Brown Forest soils and one Podzolic soil. The total LACAs ranged from 207.3 to 411.8 μmol kg–1 and were abundant in the lower horizons as well as in the surface horizons of these soils. The illuvial horizons of the Podzolic soil were rich in adsorbed oxalic acid and citric acid. Total LACAs were similar in the two subtypes of Brown Forest soils derived from different parent materials but formed under similar vegetation and climate, and were larger than that in the Podzolic soil. Among the volatile LACAs, formic acid and acetic acid dominated the moist horizons containing much organic material, whereas the non-volatile LACAs, the most abundant being oxalic acid and citric acid, increased in the subsurface horizons. The distribution of water-soluble LACAs in the Brown Forest soil profiles was closely correlated with soil acidity.

Notes: A multiple glomus tumor was studied by electron microscopy. Glomus cells showed characteristics of modified smooth-muscle cells such as intracytoplasmic myofibrils, pinocytotic vesicles, smooth-muscle dense and attachment bodies, which were surrounded by basal lamina, additionally, an abortive solitary cilium was found in a glomus cell.

Notes: Using two-dimensional (2D) electrophoresis and western blot assay, we analyzed antigenic proteins in Porphyromonas gingivalis uniquely recognized by antibodies in sera of periodontitis subjects. Proteins in the total membrane fraction of P. gingivalis 381 were resolved into at least 70 protein spots by 2D electrophoresis. In the gel stained with silver, the substance around 47 kDa protein on the acidic side (at an isoelectric point of about 4.5) was stained as a smear. Antigenic substances were characterized using purified IgGs from sera of 16 adult periodontitis (AP), 19 rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP) and 14 periodontally healthy volunteers. Western blots demonstrated that 75 kDa protein reacted with IgGs from 75% of AP patients (p〉0.001), the antigenic substance around acidic 47 kDa protein reacted with IgGs from 81.3% of AP (p〉0.01) and 68.4% of RPP patients (p〉0.01) and the acidic 47 kDa protein reacted with 87.5% of AP (p〉0.01) and 78.9% of RPP patients (p〉0.01). The reaction frequency was significantly different from that of the healthy volunteers. Also 51 kDa and 41 kDa proteins reacted with 47 and 43 of 49 IgG samples, respectively. The substance around acidic 47 kDa protein reacted with mouse antiserum to P. gingivalis-LPS. After treatment with pronase or heat, the antigenic reactions disappeared not only from the proteins, but also from the area around the acidic 47 kDa protein. When the fraction was digested with lipase, the antigenic reaction of the area decreased. It appeared that the acidic 47 kDa protein and the LPS around it formed a complex, and that the LPS contained the lipid portion. These results suggested that the acidic 47 kDa protein can be classified among the lipid A-associated proteins, and that it is the major antigenic protein which is recognized by antibodies in sera of almost periodontal patients in P. gingivalis 381.
