Notes: A novel micropolarizer has been fabricated from alumina and nickel by means of anodization and electroplating techniques. Making use of the anisotropic microstructure of the anodized alumina film, a lattice of nickel columns is easily constructed in the film, which works as a wire grid type polarizer. The fabricated polarizer has achieved an extinction ratio larger than 30 dB at the wavelength of 1.3 μm.

Notes: The structural evolution in rhombohedral-type boron nitride (r-BN) pressed up to 7.7 GPa at room temperature is examined before and after pressing using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. In the starting state, r-BN is in a platelike form with some folding. The plates consist of an almost perfect 3R structure. After pressing, a large number of stacking faults is formed and causes mixing of 3R and 2H in a few areas and a highly irregular stacking structure in most areas. This means that the coherent slip due to shearing between sp2 sheets is the dominant deformation mechanism in r-BN under high pressure at room temperature. All of these structures cause a broadening of the x-ray diffraction peaks. In some plates, the 2H structure is found in a relatively large area. It has a hexagonal lattice with the stacking sequence of ...ABAB... and lattice constants of a=0.25 nm and c=0.67 nm. The structural evolution in r-BN revealed after pressing is in contrast to that in hexagonal-type BN, in which twinning is the dominant deformation mechanism that introduces the folding of plates under high pressure at high temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Particle velocity gauges were used to measure the Hugoniots to 30 GPa of CaF2 powder compacts having initial porosities of 15% and 35%. The Hugoniot of the material with 15% porosity is concaved upward over the range to 30 GPa and lies close to the solid Hugoniot in the stress range above 15 GPa. The Hugoniot of the material with 35% porosity becomes an isovolume curve, at about the zero-pressure volume, in the stress range above about 10 GPa. Studies of recovered shock loaded samples indicate that the temperature distributions in the shock-compressed samples were very heterogeneous. It is inferred that the higher stress Hugoniot measurements pertain to a nonequilibrated mixture of the solid and liquid phases of CaF2. In view of this evidence against thermal equilibrium, one may question the validity of the Hugoniot data on the initially porous samples to obtain data on Grüneisen's ratio at high pressures.

Notes: Be-doped cubic boron nitride (c-BN) powders, prepared at 5 GPa and 1700 °C by using Li3BN2 as a catalyst, were sintered at 7.7 GPa and 2100 °C without the addition of any sintering aids. The polycrystals so obtained were p-type semiconductors as determined by the electric and thermoelectric methods. Nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, showing similar behavior to that of varistors, were observed by a four-probe method. The activation energy of the resistivity in the ohmic region at temperatures from 25 to 700 °C was about 0.3 eV.

Notes: An in situ x-ray diffraction study of room-temperature compression of rhombohedral boron nitride (rBN) was performed up to 10 GPa. Although no phase transformation of rBN was observed in a liquid pressure transmitting medium, the structure of rBN changed to become disordered within the layered stacking sequence at less than 1 GPa with the solid-state pressure transmitting medium. Further transformation to the wurtzite structure (wBN) was observed at 6 GPa and was unquenchable upon the release of pressure at room temperature. The orientation relationship of the phase transformation of rBN to wBN was compared with that of hexagonal BN to wBN. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Of the forms of muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy has the greatest systemic involvement. Although most patients with myotonic dystrophy show normal sensitivity to non-depolarising neuromuscular blocking drugs, some have been reported to show greatly increased sensitivity to these drugs, and little is known about the sensitivity of different muscles. We compared effective doses of vecuronium in a patient with myotonic dystrophy at the orbicularis oculi, adductor pollicis and flexor hallucis brevis muscles during total intravenous anaesthesia. The calculated ED50 for the orbicularis oculi (7.77 μg.kg−1 (95% CI 3.10–16.8 μg.kg−1)) was lower than for the adductor pollicis (25.3 μg.kg−1 (95% CI 20.7–43.3 μg.kg−1)) and flexor hallucis brevis muscles (29.5 μg.kg−1 (95% CI 11.0–85.6 μg.kg−1; p 〈 0.01)). The ED90 was also lower for the orbicularis oculi (35.7 μg.kg−1 (95% CI 14.8–66.5 μg.kg−1)) than for the other muscles (51.8 μg.kg−1 (95% CI 29.3–145.0 μg.kg−1) and 50.6 μg.kg−1 (95% CI 5.29–642.0 μg.kg−1), respectively) (p 〈 0.01)).

Notes: A Fabry–Perot interferometer system was used to measure the free-surface velocity of α-alumina powder compact. In situ pressure profile measurements using a pair of manganin gauges were also carried out to clarify the compaction process during compression and stress release. The Fabry–Perot system indicates that the reflectivity of the free surface of the powder material does not significantly change during the stress release process. An observed feature of the powder's stress release curve as determined by the manganin gauge suggests the existence of the residual voids in the shock compressed powder matrix even in the high shock pressure regime.
