    Notes: University students in either an optimistic or pessimistic mood state read brief stories of daily life events as event-related brain potentials were collected during the final word of each story. For subjects in a pessimistic mood, a bias to expect negative outcomes was seen as an N400/P300 effect over posterior scalp regions. For subjects in an optimistic mood, a differentiation between good and bad outcomes was also observed, but it was specific to medial frontal areas. Analysis of single-trial P300 latencies suggested that semantically incongruent and mood-incongruent outcome words resulted in increased median latency of the late positive complex (LPC) and resulted in increased variability of LPC latency across trials.

    Notes: Recently it has been suggested that thyroid function may influence neuropsychological processes not only as a result of thyroid disease but also through normal neurophysiologic adaptive mechanisms. In 69 normal university students, levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3) were assayed in blood samples and related to measures of cognitive performance and to spectral measures of the EEG recorded during cognitive performance. Significant relationships were found between T3 levels and delta power in the EEG from occipital leads, with higher T3 associated with less EEG power in the left hemisphere and greater power in the right hemisphere. Higher T3 levels were associated with poorer performance on several cognitive tasks, particularly for males, although the males with higher T3 levels also showed faster correct responses on a word fluency task. These results seem to support the hypothesis that an individual's characteristic level of thyroid function is relevant to normal neuropsychological processes.

    Notes: With the advent of dense sensor arrays (64–256 channels) in electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography studies, the probability increases that some recording channels are contaminated by artifact. If all channels are required to be artifact free, the number of acceptable trials may be unacceptably low. Precise artifact screening is necessary for accurate spatial mapping, for current density measures, for source analysis, and for accurate temporal analysis based on single-trial methods. Precise screening presents a number of problems given the large datasets. We propose a procedure for statistical correction of artifacts in dense array studies (SCADS), which (1) detects individual channel artifacts using the recording reference, (2) detects global artifacts using the average reference, (3) replaces artifact-contaminated sensors with spherical interpolation statistically weighted on the basis of all sensors, and (4) computes the variance of the signal across trials to document the stability of the averaged waveform. Examples from 128-channel recordings and from numerical simulations illustrate the importance of careful artifact review in the avoidance of analysis errors.

    Notes: Current methods in research on the electrophysiology of human information processing include high speed quantification of EEG signals from multiple electrodes. The data from each electrode comprise a time series, from which the frequency information can be extracted through Fourier analysis. A problem in this research is appropriately handling the large amount of data in such a way that the topographic patterning of the electrical activity can be related to differential usage of brain regions during specific forms of cognition. We illustrate how factor analysis can be applied to describe the regional patterning of covariance in the spectral information of a multichannel EEG. Rotated factors delineate distinct patterns of electrophysiological activity across the head. Coherence factors show good replicability over repeated observations, and lateralized effects of cognitive activity are observed in the factor loadings. Further applications of this method are discussed, including some suggestions relevant to applying confirmatory, hypothesis testing factor analyses.

    Notes: Summary The electroencephalogram (EEG) is recorded by sensors physically separated from the cortex by resistive skull tissue that smooths the potential field recorded at the scalp. This smoothing acts as a low-pass spatial filter that determines the spatial bandwidth, and thus the required spatial sampling density, of the scalp EEG. Although it is better appreciated in the time domain, the Nyquist frequency for adequate discrete sampling is evident in the spatial domain as well. A mathematical model of the low-pass spatial filtering of scalp potentials is developed, using a four concentric spheres (brain, CSF, skull, and scalp) model of the head and plausible estimates of the conductivity of each tissue layer. The surface Laplacian estimate of radial skull current density or cortical surface potential counteracts the low-pass filtering of scalp potentials by shifting the spatial spectrum of the EEG, producing a band-passed spatial signal that emphasizes local current sources. Simulations with the four spheres model and dense sensor arrays demonstrate that progressively more detail about cortical potential distribution is obtained as sampling is increased beyond 128 channels.

    Notes: Summary Visual event-related potential (ERP) studies show effects due to target detection in the P3 and in earlier negativities over posterior recording sites. The topography of these earlier components suggests contributions from both anterior and posterior neural generators, however these studies were performed with sparse recording arrays and may not have provided a full description of the scalp topography of the visual ERP. The current study employed a high-density recording array (64 channels) and spherical spline interpolated topographic voltage and current density maps to describe the scalp distribution of the major deflections in the visual ERP from a visual oddball paradigm: the P1, N1, N2/P2a (a temporally coincident posterior negativity and anterior positivity) and P3. A modified difference wave analysis was also performed to track the time-course of target detection effects in the ERP. Target detection effects were found in the N2/P2a and P3 components. The scalp distribution of the N2/P2a was consistent with separate frontal and posterior neural generators and this is discussed in reference to human hemodynamic and nonhuman primate studies of neural activity in the inferior temporal visual object recognition system and in frontal systems of selective attention and working memory in visual target detection tasks.

    Notes: Abstract Some cognitive behavior therapy methods focus upon verbal cognition, others place more emphasis upon imagery. These two modes of cognition are represented differently in the brain: In most individuals imagery is a function of the right cerebral hemisphere and verbal cognition is processed in the left hemisphere. Two cognitive behavioral methods, one emphasizing imagery, the other verbalizations, were used by speech-anxious subjects, half of whom showed greater right hemisphere usage, half greater left hemisphere usage as indicated by their lateral eye movements in response to reflective questions. Although only approaching significance, the results suggested that treatment was most effective if it employed cognition of the subjects nonpreferred hemisphere. This may suggest that clients with clear imagery may benefit more from a verbal strategy, while clients with frequent self-verbalization may benefit more by using coping imagery.

    Notes: Abstract Anxiety constrains cognition by biasingattention toward the anticipation of threat. Thebiological basis of this influence may be seen in theevolutionary progression of vertebrate defensivebehavior away from simple reflexes and toward increasingneural mediation between threat stimulus and behavioralresponse. In mammalian brains with larger frontal lobesthe mediation becomes complex; limbic motivational circuits, which extend into prefrontal areas,operate to constrain the corticolimbic consolidation ofmemory. In humans, hemispheric specialization and theextensive elaboration of limbic cortex in the frontal lobes may provide clues to the uniqueways that human motivational controls shape memory andcognition. By focusing attention, anxiety may play a keyrole in the analytic cognition believed to be subsumed by the left hemisphere. By bringingthe defensive affective posture from limbic structuresto bear upon the frontal lobe's organization of workingmemory, anxiety may be particularly important to the ongoing feedback control of thecognitive process. The study of neural mechanismssuggests that anxiety is not simply a distraction to thecognitive apparatus; it may be fundamental to motivating cognition adaptively.
