Notes: Symmetry properties of the space of complex (or formal) hyper-Kähler metrics are studied in the language of hyper-Kähler hierarchies. The construction of finite symmetries is analogous to the theory of Riemann–Hilbert transformations, loop group elements now taking values in a (pseudo-) group of canonical transformations of a simplectic manifold. In spite of their highly nonlinear and involved nature, infinitesimal expressions of these symmetries are shown to have a rather simple form. These infinitesimal transformations are extended to the Plebanski key functions to give rise to a nonlinear realization of a Poisson loop algebra. The Poisson algebra structure turns out to originate in a contact structure behind a set of symplectic structures inherent in the hyper-Kähler hierarchy. Possible relations to membrane theory are briefly discussed.

Notes: Three types of hidden variables, both independent and dependent, are shown to underlie the hyper-Kähler geometry in a complexified setting. The variables satisfy an infinite set of differential equations ("hierarchy''), just as in the case of most nonlinear integrable systems. The notion of the Plebanski key functions [J. Math. Phys. 16, 2395 (1975)] is extended to this hierarchy to give an analog of the notion of the "τ function.'' Two examples of special solutions, which are reminiscent of several solution techniques in the theory of nonlinear integrable systems, are presented for illustration.

Notes: Abstract Background. Chemotherapy is an important component of the multimodal approach to the treatment of advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods. We investigated the associations between p53, p21 (Waf1), bcl-2, and bax expression and response to chemotherapy (cisplatin + 5-fluorouracil + leucovorin) in 43 patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The expression of p53, p21 (Waf1), bcl-2, and bax proteins was analyzed immunohistologically in pretreatment biopsy and post-treatment resected specimens. Results. The 23 patients who had objective evidence of either a complete response (CR) or a partial response (PR) to chemotherapy survived for significantly longer than the 20 patients who had no response (NR). The expression of p53, p21 (Waf1), bcl-2, and bax was detected in 26 (61%), 12 (28%), 6 (14%), and 19 (44%) of the pretreatment biopsy specimens, respectively. The response to chemotherapy was not independently associated with the expression of any of these proteins. However, in the 26 patients with p53-expressing tumors, the response rate was 80% in patients whose tumor also expressed p21, whereas it was 19% in those whose tumor did not coexpress p21. No change in p53 expression was observed before and after chemotherapy, except in 1 patient; however, p21 expression appeared to be induced by chemotherapy in 5 patients. Patient survival was also not independently associated with the expression of any of these proteins. However, patients with p53-negative or p21-positive tumors had a better response to chemotherapy and survived for longer than those with p53-positive and p21-negative tumors. Conclusion. p53 and p21 expression in biopsy specimens obtained before chemotherapy could be useful predictors of response and survival in patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Notes: Abstract A new super Toda lattice hierarchy is proposed and formulated in the language of differential algebra. AD-module structure is shown to exist behind this nonlinear system and to play the same role as a similarD-module for the super KP hierarchy. From the structure of thisD-module, one can indeed see a direct connection with a set of affine coordinates on an infinite-dimensional super Grassmannian manifold. These affine coordinates are the basic ingredients of an intrinsic construction of τ functions as well as symmetries.

Notes: Abstract Symmetries of the super Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy are studied. A key role is played by a D-module structure, which connects the nonlinear system with the geometry of an infinite-dimensional super Grassmannian manifold. Infinitesimal action of a Lie superalgebra on the super Grassmannian manifold, via this connection, gives rise to symmetries of the nonlinear system.
