    Notes: Abstract The aerobic Gram-negative gliding bacteria, Flexibacter elegans (Cytophagales) and Myxococcus fulvus (Myxobacterales) contain exclusively menaquinones as isoprenoid quinones. Each strain produces 3 different menaquinones. The menaqinone content of Flexibacter elegans was 1.5 μmol/g dry cells, with MK-7 as the main compound (〉99%). MK-7 was identified by mass and n.m.r. spectroscopy. Myxococcus fulvus contained 2.1 μmol menaquinones per g dry mass, with more than 90% being MK-8.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The construction, handling and performance of a new glass sphere sampler is described, which enables the sampling of 100 l of water for the analysis of lipophilic organic compounds. The sampler can be operated down to a water depth of ca. 200 m and the sampling is free of contamination. The organic compounds are extracted in the same sampler by mixing with an organic solvent which can be lighter or heavier than water. The sampler has been tested successfully for the determination of hydrocarbons and the results were compared with those of a 10 l sampler.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Konstruktion, Handhabung und Leistungsfähigkeit eines neuen Glaskugelschöpfers wird beschrieben, der es gestattet, für die Analyse lipophiler, organischer Stoffe eine Wassermenge von 100 l zu beproben. Der Schöpfer ist bis ca. 200 m Wassertiefe einsetzbar, und die Probenentnahme ist praktisch kontaminationsfrei. Die Extraktion der zu analysierenden Spurenstoffe erfolgt in dem gleichen Gefäß durch Rühren mit einem organischen Extraktionsmittel, das sowohl spezifisch leichter als auch schwerer als Wasser sein kann. Der Schöpfer wurde anhand der Bestimmung von Kohlenwasserstoffen erfolgreich getestet und die Ergebnisse mit denen eines 10-l-Schöpfers verglichen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary On a cruise into the northeast Atlantic background values of hydrocarbons in seawater have been determined. The water extracts were investigated by ultraviolet fluorescence spectroscopy (UV-F), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results were compared with those from sea areas with higher degrees of pollution (North Sea, Baltic Sea). The “total hydrocarbon concentrations” — determined by UV-F — are in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 μg/l (Ekofisk crude oil equivalents) and thereby, are 10 times lower than the values of the Baltic and North Sea. The investigations by HPLC demonstrate considerable differences in the composition of the fluorescing compounds of the Atlantic and the Baltic and North Sea, showing for the latter higher amounts of polar non-hydrocarbons. Selected single hydrocarbon constituents were determined by GC-MS. The concentrations vary — depending on the chemical structure — between 3 ng/l to below 5 pg/l.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Auf einer Fahrt in den Nordost-Atlantik wurden Basiswerte von Kohlenwasserstoffen im Meerwasser bestimmt. Die Wasserextrakte wurden mittels UV-Vis-Fluoreszenzspektroskopie (UV-F), HPLC, GC und GC-MS untersucht und die Ergebnisse mit Werten aus stärker belasteten Seegebieten (Nord- und Ostsee) verglichen. Die mittels UV-F bestimmten „Gesamtkohlenwasserstoff-Konzentrationen” liegen im Bereich von 0,1 bis 0,3 μg/l (Ekofisk-Äquivalente) und sind damit ca. zehnmal geringer als Werte aus der Nord- und Ostsee. Die HPLC-Untersuchungen zeigen erhebliche Unterschiede in der Zusammensetzung der fluoreszierenden Verbindungen der Atlantik-Proben und Proben aus der Nord- und Ostsee; letztere weisen einen wesentlich höheren Anteil polarer, fluoreszierender Nicht-Kohlenwasserstoffe auf. Die mittels GC-MS bestimmten Kohlenwasserstoff-Einzelkomponenten variieren in Abhängigkeit von ihrer Struktur im Bereich von 3 ng/l bis unter 5 pg/l.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary In June and July 1991 severe pollution caused by alkylated phenols (tertiary butyl phenols) occurred throughout the German Bight. Similar pollution was found two months earlier along the north-west coast of Denmark. Using drift model calculations and detailed investigations of the pollution's chemical composition, an attempt was made to establish the origin of the product.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Im Juni und Juli 1991 waren in der gesamten Deutschen Bucht erhebliche Verschmutzungen durch alkylierte Phenole (tert. Butylphenole) aufgetreten. Ähnliche Verschmutzungen waren bereits zwei Monate vorher an der dänischen Nordwest-Küste beobachtet worden. Mittels Driftmodellrechnnungen und detaillierter Untersuchung der chemischen Zusammensetzung der Verschmutzungen wurde versucht, die Herkunft des Produkts festzustellen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Within the framework of penal proceedings, a total of 253 cases of oil pollutions were investigated from 1983 to 1985. The method for the chemical analysis of oil pollutions, which has been developed by the Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut, has thereby proved to be a successful method of convicting the guilty polluter, and has proved itself to be reliable even in the case of thin oil films on the sea. The success of the investigation is decisively dependent upon the condition that the right comparison sample is taken from the suspect ship; for that reason, the surveillance of the sea represents a most critical point in convicting polluters. The majority of the oil films detected contained heavy fuel oil or gas oil residues, only a very small part of the samples showed crude oil. These findings emphasize that it is not the oil rig platforms or tankers, but general shipping, which contributes essentially to oil pollution in the region of the Continental Shelf of the Federal Republic of Germany.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Im Rahmen von Strafverfahren wurden von 1983 bis 1985 insgesamt 253 Fälle von Ölverschmutzungen untersucht. Das im Deutschen Hydrographischen Institut entwickelte Verfahren zur chemischen Analyse von Ölproben aus Gewässerverunrei-nigungen und der Vergleich mit Proben von verdächtigten Schiffen erwies sich dabei als erfolgreiche Methode, die Verschmutzer zu überführen, und hat sich auch bei dünnen Ölfilmen auf dem Meer bewährt. Der Erfolg der Untersuchungen hängt entscheidend davon ab, daß die richtige Vergleichsprobe gezogen wird, daher stellt die Überwachung des Meeres den kritischsten Punkt der Beweissicherung dar. Die meisten der entdeckten Ölfilme enthielten Schweröl- oder Gasölreste, nur ein sehr kleiner Teil der Proben wies Rohöl auf. Diese Befunde unterstreichen, daß nicht die Ölförderplattformen oder Tanker, sondern die allgemeine Schiffahrt hauptsächlich zur Ölverschmutzung im Gebiet des Festlandsockels der Bundesrepublik Deutschland beiträgt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Pteridines, LXV: A New Proposal for the Structure of the Red Eye Pigments Drosopterin and Isodrosopterin of Drosophila melanogasterOn the basis of new spectral data structure 6 is proposed for the red eye pigments drosopterin and isodrosopterin from the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster. This conclusion is mainly derived from 1H-NMR spectra of specifically methylated drosopterins which were synthesized analogously to iso/drosopterin. All spectra of the enantiomeric pigments are in agreement with structure 6, as are their chemical behavior and pKa-values.
    Notes: Aufgrund neuer spektroskopischer Daten wird für die roten Augenpigmente Drosopterin und Isodrosopterin aus Drosophila melanogaster die neue Konstitution 6 vorgeschlagen. Sie basiert hauptsächlich auf 1H-NMR-Spektren spezifisch methylierter Drosopterine, die analog dem Iso/Drosopterin synthetisiert wurden. UV-, CD- und Massenspektren der enantiomeren Pigmente stehen ebenso in Einklang mit der Konstitution 6, wie ihr chemisches Verhalten und die pK-Werte.

    Notes: Abstract A non-target screening by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been carried out on water extracts of the river Elbe in order to obtain an overview of organic compounds being dissolved or bound to suspended matter in the Elbe. Samples of 1001 volume were taken at the freshwater border at Stade and extracted by liquid-liquid extraction with pentane. Before GC-MS analysis, the water extracts were fractionated into 15 subsamples by HPLC on an SiO2 column. A sensitivity of ca. 50 to 250 pg/l was reached for the GC-MC analysis. Several hundreds of natural and anthropogenic compounds could be identified or at least grouped into a compound class. The presence of a number of compounds could be verified from earlier investigations, in addition a great number of anthropogenic compounds were described which have previously not been reported for the river Elbe.
