Notes: Abstract Besides carotenoids a complex of flexirubin-type pigments was isolated from the gliding bacteriumCytophaga johnsonae Cy j1 and separated into 6 components, which partly containe chlorine. In spite of the fact that these components still consist of pigment mixtures, the gross structures of 18 new flexirubin-type pigments could be deduced by spectroscopic and chemical investigations. The results open insights into biosynthesis and structural variety of the flexirubins, the novel non-isoprenoid pigments recently found inFlexibacter elegans.

Notes: Abstract Myxothiazol inhibited the electron transport in the cytochrome b-c 1segment of membrane particles from Paracoccus denitrificans. There remained, however, a residual NADH oxidation of about 10% which was probably due to the presence of an alternative respiratory pathway via cytochrome o. This may also explain why in presence of myxothiazol growth of P. denitrificans is resumed, at a reduced rate, after an adaption period of 1 h.

Notes: Abstract Spirulina platensis and Spirulina maxima were characterized by 16S ribosomal RNA oligonucleotide cataloguing. Both species are highly related. They fall into the main group of the cyanobacteria, showing a remote relationship to Nostoc, Fischerella, Aphanocapsa, and also to Prochloron. Low similarity coefficients were found between the Spirulina species and certain organotrophic and sulfide oxidizing bacteria, viz. Saprospira grandis, Vitreoscilla stercoraria, Leucothrix mucor, Herpetosiphon aurantiacus, and Beggiatoa leptomitiformis, respectively. This result does not support the classical hypothesis that certain filamentous gliding bacteria are apochlorotic cyanobacteria.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Summary In this first article on the carotenoids of Myxobacterales we report on the minor carotenoids of Stigmatella aurantiaca: phytoene, phytofluene, lycopene, γ-carotene, 4-keto-γ-carotene, 1′,2′-dihydro-1′-hydroxy-γ-carotene, 4-keto-1′,2′-dihydro-1′-hydroxy-γ-carotene, 4-keto-1′,2′-dihydro-1′-hydroxy-torulene, and 1,2,1′,2′-tetrahydro-1,1′-dihydroxy-lycopene. These pigments account for about 10% of total carotenoids.

Notes: Summary 0948 02 1. A new myxobacterium was isolated from a variety of soils which were collected in widely separated areas in different climate zones. The organism appears to be a common member of the soil microflora. 2. The new species belongs to the family Sorangiaceae. A new genus had to be established for it. The name Nannocystis exedens is proposed. 3. The vegetative cells of N. exedens are cylindrical, fat rods with blunt, rounded ends. In the central parts of the swarm and in older cultures the cells become short ovoid, cube shaped, or even spherical. The myxospores are spherical and optically refractile. 4. The fruiting bodies are solitary cysts with a firm wall. They are oval or spherical in shape and very variable in size: the smallest specimens measured 6×3.5 μm and less, the largest ones about 110×40 μm. 5. When N. exedens is grown on poor media the agar within the swarm area becomes corroded in a peculiar fashion: large caverns, tunnels, deep holes, and furrows arise. The pattern is possibly due to agar decomposition. 6. The new organism requires a complex organic N-source. Gelatine is liquefied, milk casein hydrolyzed. Cells of Sarcina lutea are almost completely lysed, yeast cells are attacked, but their walls cannot be broken down. Cellulose and starch are not decomposed. All strains are catalase-positive.
