    Notes: Abstract  Evaluation of trunk movements, trunk muscle activation, intra-abdominal pressure and displacement of centres of pressure and mass was undertaken to determine whether trunk orientation is a controlled variable prior to and during rapid bilateral movement of the upper limbs. Standing subjects performed rapid bilateral symmetrical upper limb movements in three directions (flexion, abduction and extension). The results indicated a small (0.4–3.3°) but consistent initial angular displacement between the segments of the trunk in a direction opposite to that produced by the reactive moments resulting from limb movement. Phasic activation of superficial trunk muscles was consistent with this pattern of preparatory motion and with the direction of motion of the centre of mass. In contrast, activation of the deep abdominal muscles was independent of the direction of limb motion, suggesting a non-direction specific contribution to spinal stability. The results support the opinion that feedforward postural responses result in trunk movements, and that orientation of the trunk and centre of mass are both controlled variables in relation to rapid limb movements.

    Notes: Summary Ten male subjects were tested to determine the effects of muscle fatigue upon the activation pattern of the two main ankle extensor muscles, the ‘slow-twitch’ soleus (SOL) and the relatively ‘fast-twitchrs medial gastrocnemius (MG), during a fatiguing 60-s trial of hopping to maximal height. The myoelectric signals from SOL and MG were recorded together with the vertical ground reaction force signal and analysed by means of a computer-aided electromyograph (EMG) contour analysis, i.e. two-dimensional frequency distributions were obtained relating the activation patterns of the two synergists. The EMGs were also full-wave rectified and integrated (IEMG) according to three phases of the hopping movement (PRE, pre-activation phase; ECC, eccentric phase; CON, concentric phase). Results indicated that there were significant decreases (P〈0.01) in the peak ground reaction force, the height of hopping and the mechanical power per unit body weight at the end of the fatiguing contractions. These decreases in mechanical parameters were accompanied by significant (P〈0.01) decreases in all three phases of MG IEMG while SOL IEMG showed no such significant declines, except in the CON phase. Thus, the decreased mechanical parameters could in large part be accounted for by the substantial and selective decline of the excitation level of the relatively fast-twitch MG muscle. Our data suggest that the centrally mediated pre-activation of the fatiguable MG muscle as well as the MG activation during the eccentric phase, which is largely controlled by supraspinal inputs and stretch-reflex modulation, are most affected by fatigue changes during repeated maximal stretch/shortening cycles of the ankle extensors.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the position and velocity dependency of the strength (torque) output of lateral flexor muscles of the trunk. Twelve male volunteers with no history of back pain participated. Movement was constrained to the frontal plane and the velocity was controlled by an isokinetic dynamometer. The eccentric and concentric strength of lateral flexor muscles on the left side was measured in a supine position at velocities of 15, 30, 45 and 60° · s−1 and static strength at 20, 10, 0, −10 and −20° of lateral trunk flexion. Average peak torque values ranged between 211 and 218 Nm (eccentric) and between 66 and 140 Nm (concentric) over all tested velocities, and the average static torque ranged between 80 and 172 Nm over all tested positions. The shape of the torque–position curves was unaffected by speed and peak torque occurred at an average position of 11–15° to the contralateral (right) side in both eccentric and concentric actions. In eccentric actions, torque output was significantly higher than that during concentric and static actions. Increasing the speed of contraction did not affect eccentric torque values, whereas both peak and angle-specific concentric torque decreased with increasing speed. These results are in general accordance with earlier findings from other muscle groups, such as the knee extensors. However, they are partially at variance with results obtained in studies of lateral lifting and lowering, indicating that there are other limiting factors in complex tasks that do not just involve the trunk muscles.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this investigation was to compare children and adults of both genders with respect to torque-velocity, electromyogram (EMG)-velocity and torque-EMG relationships during maximal voluntary knee extensor muscle actions. Four groups of ten subjects each were studied comprising 11-year-old girls and boys and female and male physical education students (22–35 years). Maximal voluntary eccentric (lengthening) and concentric (shortening) actions of the knee extensors were performed at the constant velocities of 45, 90 and 180° · s−1. Average values for torque and EMG activity, recorded by surface electrodes from the quadriceps muscle, were taken for the mid 40° of the 80° range of motion. The overall shapes of the torque- and EMG-velocity relationships were similar for all four groups, showing effects of velocity under concentric (torque decrease and EMG increase) but not under eccentric conditions. Eccentric torques were always greater than velocity-matched concentric ones, whereas the eccentric EMG values were lower than the concentric ones at corresponding velocities. Torque output per unit EMG activity was clearly higher for eccentric than for concentric conditions and the difference was of similar magnitude for all groups. Thus, the torque-EMG-velocity relationships would appear to have been largely independent of gender and to be fully developed at a prepubertal age.

    Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this study was to provide objective information on the involvement of different abdominal and hip flexor muscles during various types of common training exercises used in rehabilitation and sport. Six healthy male subjects performed altogether 38 different static and dynamic training exercises – trunk and hip flexion sit-ups, with various combinations of leg position and support, and bi- and unilateral leg lifts. Myoelectric activity was recorded with surface electrodes from the rectus abdominis, obliquus externus, obliquus internus, rectus femoris, and sartorius muscles and with indwelling fine-wire electrodes from the iliacus muscle. The mean electromyogram amplitude, normalised to the highest observed value, was compared between static and dynamic exercises separately. The hip flexors were highly activated only in exercises involving hip flexion, either lifting the whole upper body or the legs. In contrast, the abdominal muscles showed marked activation both during trunk and hip flexion sit-ups. In hip flexion sit-ups, flexed and supported legs increased hip flexor activation, whereas such modifications did not generally alter the activation level of the abdominals. Bilateral, but not unilateral, leg lifts required activation of abdominal muscles. In trunk flexion sit-ups an increased activation of the abdominal muscles was observed with increased flexion angle, whereas the opposite was true for hip flexion sit-ups. Bilateral leg lifts resulted in higher activity levels than hip flexion sit-ups for the iliacus and sartorius muscles, while the opposite was true for rectus femoris muscles. These data could serve as a basis for improving the design and specificity of test and training exercises.
