    Notes: The temperature and concentration dependence of the magnetic susceptibililty of La2Cu1−xMxO4 with M=Zn and Ni and 0≤x〈0.10 has been measured for 1.8≤T≤400 K. The 3D antiferromagnetic order in La2CuO4 is highly sensitive to doping, introducing additional holes by increasing x in La2−xSrxCuO4 from 0 to 0.02 suppresses the TN from 240 to 0 K. The Néel temperature of La2Cu1−xZnxO4 with x=0.0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10 has been determined by using the temperature derivative of the magnetic susceptibility measured on random polycrystalline and aligned polycrystalline samples. TN is depressed rapid with Zn doping with an initial depression rate dTN/dxZn≈20 K. Similar studies of Ni-doped La2CuO4 will be presented and discussed.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of an isolated ferromagnetic bond of coupling constant K embedded in a layered spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with interplane coupling strength J⊥=αJ(parallel) (0≤α≤1.0) have been studied using linear-spin-wave (LSW) theory. In the pure lattice, the sublattice magnetization 〈Szi〉 is 0.304 at α=0 and saturates to 0.422 at α=1.0. The spin correlations 〈SxiSxj〉 decrease with increasing α within the plane and increase along the interplane direction. The introduction of an isolated ferromagnetic bond into the host lattice tends to enhance 〈Szi〉 at lattice sites joining the bond as K approaches zero. Increasing K will drastically suppress 〈SxiSxj〉 across the bond. Whereas, 〈SxiSxj〉 is enhanced between the neighboring sites close to the impurity link resulting in the suppression of 〈Szi〉. This behavior persists for all α values. The LSW theory breaks down at a certain K value. Increasing α, the critical value of K extends to a larger number.

    Notes: The current work investigates the sublattice orientation of GaAs on (001) Ge/GexSi1−x/Si and Ge substrates offcut 6° to [110] as a function of atmospheric pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) nucleation conditions. Anisotropic sidewall etching of the GaAs films and differential interference contrast microscopy of the GaAs film surface reveal a 90° sublattice rotation between the two possible GaAs phases. One sublattice orientation dominates at film nucleation temperatures 〉600 °C, another dominates at nucleation temperatures 〈500 °C. Incomplete transition between the two sublattice orientations during pregrowth thermal cycling accounts for the appearance of localized bands and clouded regions of antiphase disorder, marking a shift in the polarity of the GaAs film. We have concluded that the observed domain rotation results from a temperature-dependent surface transition prior to actual GaAs nucleation. In particular it is suspected that background arsenic levels in the MOCVD system induce the observed transition. We propose that localized antiphase disorder reflects kinetically limited arsenic dimer orientation on the prenucleation germanium surface. Conditions for the complete suppression of antiphase disorder under optimized growth conditions are described and demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In order to evaluate the effect of Verapamil on human cutaneous anaphylactic responses, ragweed-sensitive individuals were skin tested with ragweed, ragweed plus Verapamil, and Verapamil alone. In addition, using a skin chamber technique, the effect of Verapamil on antigen-induced histamine release in vivo was investigated. The results suggest that Verapamil, applied locally in non-irritant doses, does not affect Type I hypersensitivity skin reactions.

    Notes: Previously, the synthesis of a hippocampal 35,000 Mr protein increased in response to glucocorticoid treatment and a variety of stressors. We now show by immunoprecipitation that this cytosolic protein is glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (E.C.1.1.1.8; GPDH). In addition, four polypeptides encoded by glucocorticoid-induced mRNAs co-migrated with hippocampal protein synthetic products on two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels, including a 35,000 Mr protein of ∼pI 6.3, that had previously been identified as GPDH by hybrid-selection with a GPDH cDNA clone. The 35,000 Mrin vitro translation product was also immunoprecipitated with the GPDH antibody. Using radiolabeled hippocampal slices and two-dimensional gel analysis, a 35,000 Mr polypeptide of ∼pI 6.4 increased five-fold after 30 min of intermittent tail-shock. This protein was found predominantly in the 20,000×g pellet and did not immunoprecipitate with the GPDH antibody . However, a 35,000 Mr polypeptide was also found in the cytosol as a minor component after stress, which did immunoprecipitate with the GPDH antibody. Therefore, there are at least two shock-induced 35,000 Mr proteins, one of which is GPDH. These results establish that increases in GPDH mRNA prevalence and protein synthesis occur in response to both glucocorticoids and stress in the adult rat hippocampus. Based on the increased enzyme activity seen in the nervous system in response to glucocorticoids, dietary restriction, and nerve injury, the induction of GPDH may have functional consequences in cellular adaptation to stress.
