Notes: Abstract Cat gene expression has been investigated following PEG-mediated plasmid uptake into barley protoplasts. The uptake conditions optimised for transient expression were employed for stable transformation. Transformed protoplast-derived calli of the cvs. Dissa and Igri, were selected on medium containing G418 at 40 μg ml−1 or kanamycin sulphate at 250 μg ml−1. Absolute transformation frequencies of 28.9×10−5 and 21.3×10−5 were recorded for Dissa with kanamycin sulphate and G418 selection, respectively. The frequency for Igri was 11.5×10−5 with G418 selection. Antibiotic resistant protoplast-derived colonies expressed NPTII activity; Southern hybridisation confirmed integration of the nptII gene into barley genomic DNA.

Notes: Summary The qualitative and quantitative nature of microfungi in soil after burning was studied for seven months. The numbers of fungal species and their colonies in soil were reduced immediately after burning but returned to their normal state after about a couple of months. Species of Aspergillus and Penicillium were the first to colonize the burnt soil. Trichoderma viride appeared after two months. Penicillium spp. decreased consistently with time whereas T. viride followed the reverse path. Several other species appeared in due course as and when ecological conditions became suitable for them. re]19760720

Notes: Abstract We propose a thermodynamically consistent equation of state (EOS) for a hot and dense handron gas (HG) incorporating the hard-core finite-size correction for baryons which result in a Van-der Waals excluded volume effect. We develop a complete description within a thermal hadron gas model to determine the production of strange particles in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions and calculate the strange particle ratios as function of baryon chemical potential pB and temperature T. The results are compared with other existing thermodynamically consistent EOS. Furthermore we extract the thermal freeze-out parameters for different strange particles using the latest data obtained by the CERN experiments.

Notes: Dielectric loss measurements at four temperatures and as a function of frequency are presented for the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) systems containing small concentrations of cholesterol, cholesteryl acetate, cholesteryl oleate, cholesteryl nonanoate, cholesteryl benzoate, cholesteryl oleyl carbonate, p-methoxy benzilidine-p-n-butyl aniline, diphenyl ether, and cetyl acetate. For the first five systems, the α-relaxation temperature for sure PVAc was found to be increased in the presence of the said additives. The results of the dielectric depolarization spectroscopy at 1 kHz and the dynamic mechanical analysis also conform with these observations. It is inferred that the segmental motion in PVAc is hindered by these first five additive molecules through a specific dipolar interaction. These additives are therefore described as antiplasticizers to PVAc as they extend the glassy region over a wider temperature interval. The analysis of the dielectric data to give the dielectric decay function and the β parameter reveals that the two types of the additives, viz., plasticizers and antiplasticizers, can be distinguished by the opposite signs obtained for the ratio Δβ/ΔC, where C is the concentration. The analysis based on the WLF theory shows that the WLF reference temperature T0 is higher than that for pure polymer if the additive is an antiplasticizer while the same is lower for the plasticizing additives. The apparent enthalpy of activation for the dielectric relaxation process is found to be higher in the case of additives which show antiplasticization of PVAc.
