Notizen: SiC nanofibers were prepared by using polymer blend and melt-spinning techniques.Polycarbosilane (PCS) as a SiC precursor polymer was dispersed finely in novolac-phenolic resin(PF) as a carbon precursor polymer with a ratio of PCS/PF=3/7. The polymer blend was melt-spuncontinuously. The fibers were then soaked in an acid solution in order to stabilize them (to convertinto an infusible state) and finally heat-treated at 1000°C. The resulting fibers consisted ofPF-derived carbon matrix including elongated nanofibers derived from PCS. Finally, the fibers wereoxidized with nitric acid to remove the carbon matrix, and the released nanofibers were collectedwith a membrane filter. The resulting nanofibers were several 100 nm in diameter and 100 μm ormore in length. They were amorphous and contained a large amount of oxygen. A part of thenanofibers was further heated to 1500°C in a graphite tube resistance furnace, resulting incrystallization into β-SiC. The behaviors were quite similar to those of a commercially availableSiC fibers derived from PCS. In order to obtain optimum conditions, the processes were examined

Notizen: Abstract Marked fluctuation of concentrations of90Sr and137Cs was observed in the bottom waters at the entrance of Wakasa Bay during 1987–1992, and the cause was investigated. The concentrations of90Sr and137Cs in the bottom waters were significantly low when the upper level of the Japan Sea Proper Water (JSPW) was high and covered the sampling depth, but high when the upper level of the JSPW was low. The cause of the fluctuation observed in the bottom waters is, therefore, suggested to be the vertical fluctuation of the upper level of the JSPW on the shelf slope, which has been little described before.

Notizen: Abstract Nondestructive determination of major and trace elements within voluminous materials has been demonstrated by prompt γ-ray neutron activation analysis. Some fragmented pieces of pottery bowls considered to have been produced in the late 18th century were analyzed by a new internal monostandard method, and noticeable differences of the elemental contents and significant correlations of the elemental distributions were observed among the samples. The possibility of identification of producing areas of unearthened material is demonstrated by the analytical results and the applicability of this method to the investigation of precious samples in a completely nondestructive way is verified in practice.

Notizen: Abstract Prompt γ-ray analysis using the internal monostandard method was applied to voluminous archaeological bronze mirrors produced in ancient China. Sn/Cu content ratios were determined nondestructively by this method. Furthermore, Au/Cu, As/Cu, and Sb/Cu content ratios were determined by means of measuring decay γ-rays emitted from radioactive nuclides produced within samples via (n,γ) reactions. It is clear that the Sn/Cu content ratios in bronze mirrors produced in the Sung era is smaller than in ones produced in between the Han and the Tung era.

Notizen: Abstract An internal monostandard method for PGAA is proposed for completely non-destructive analysis of elements in bulky samples by the use of a neutron beam guided out from the reactor. The method is essentially the same as the k 0 method except that it corrects for the change of relative γ-ray counting efficiencies caused by the absorption and scattering of neutrons and absorption of γ-rays within the sample. Some examples of applications to archaeological samples of earthen wares, bronze mirrors, and to voluminous meteorite samples are demonstrated, and its future application to the in-situ studies of distribution and metabolism of a certain elements in animals is also explained.

Notizen: Measurements are performed on film thickness and free surface velocity around a rotating roll for Newtonian, non-Newtonian inelastic, and viscoelastic fluids by using noncontact methods of a capacitance probe and a laser Doppler velocimeter probe. The film thickness decreases with increasing inspection angle for Newtonian fluids. For non-Newtonian fluids, it retains an approximately constant value, owing to shear-thinning of viscosity, except for a meniscus region development, which is dependent on fluid elasticity. Comparison of current results with the film thickness from a previous work is also made. With the increment of inspection angle, the free surface velocity increases rapidly in the meniscus region and maintains a constant value almost equal to a roll speed in the other region for viscoelastic fluids, while it increases linearly for Newtonian fluids. The shear rate at a roll surface is presented assuming that the velocity distribution in the liquid film is a polynomial equation. It is found that viscoelastic fluids exhibit different behavior from that of Newtonian and non-Newtonian inelastic fluids. Evaluation of the force acting on the liquid film for Newtonian fluids implies that the velocity gradient at a roll surface in an ascending region may be steeper than the parabolic form assumed in this study.
