Notes: Abstract Laboratory incubations were conducted to determine the ammonia (NH3) loss from urea as affected by the addition of coarse and ground (fine) pyrites at 1:1, 1:2 and 1:5 urea: pyrite (w/w) ratios and methods of application (surfaceapplication, incorporation and placement). Coarse pyrites (〉-2mm) were not effective in reducing NH3 loss from urea when surface applied even at the highest ratio of pyrite (15.9% vs 18.7% without pyrite). Ground pyrites (0.1–0.25 mm), in 1:1 ratio, had about 5% less NH3 loss than the urea alone treatment. Higher ratios of pyrites reduced NH3 loss much more. Ammonia losses were the most with surface-applied urea (18.9%) and the least (13.5%) when placed (2.5 cm) below the soil surface. Addition of ground pyrite to surface-applied urea (1:1 ratio) decreased the loss to 13.2%. Urea+pyrite placed below the soil surface had the least loss (9.8%). Results indicate that combined application of urea and fine pyrite could reduce NH3 loss.

Description / Table of Contents: Herkömmliches Vernetzen von Polyethylen niedriger Dichte (LDPE) wurde mit Dicumylperoxid (DCP) als Vernetzer durchgeführt.
Notes: Conventional crosslinking of low density polyethylene (LDPE) was carried out using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as crosslinking agent. DCP in various concentrations was mixed with LDPE chips in an extruder at 135 - 145°C. Monofilaments were drawn on a laboratory drawing machine at 110°C. It was found that tensile properties, percent shrinkage and density were improved with the increase in the concentration of DCP and in the heating period, whereas, however, the percent swelling decreased.

Notes: Low density monofilaments of polyethylene with varying draw ratios were subjected to high energy radiation using Co60 gamma radiation source. It was found that the tensile strength is sharply improved with the increasing dose up to 20 Mrd beyond which a sharp decrease in tenacity and initial modulus was observed. The swelling behaviour also decreased with the increased in dose of irradiation. However, density showed an increasing trend. The shrinkage behaviour of all the filaments was found to increase with increasing dose and draw ratios. The results have been explained in terms of continuous increase in crosslink density with the increasing dose of irradiation along with loss of crystallinity, which appears to be more severe in the latter stages of exposure. The samples exhibited memory effect after redrawing at 100°C and cooling under tension followed by further heating at 110°C under relaxed condition. The shrinkage was still much higher but independent of draw ratio.

Notes: Medical grade black braided silk suture and pure mulberry silk twisted yarn were grafted with methacrylic acid (MAA) using 60Co gamma radiation. The effect of various synthesis conditions on the grafting was studied. The addition of methanol in water has a marked effect on the degree of grafting, maximum yield of grafting was obtained in an equivolume mixture of water-methanol. The percent grafting increased with the increase in the monomer concentration and in total radiation. For a constant total dose, grafting was found to be higher at lower dose rates. The order of the dependence of the rate of grafting on the dose rate was found to be 0.53 and 0.56 for medical grade black braided silk suture samples and mulberry silk twisted yarn samples respectively. The immobilization of an antimicrobial drug, 8-hydroxy quinoline (8-HQ) hydrochloride on the grafted pure silk for sustained delivery, its release in vitro and its antimicrobial activity were also studied. The percentage of 8-HQ immobilized onto various grafted silk samples increased with the increase in the degree of grafting. The release of the drug in distilled water was sustained for 32 days. 8-HQ was found to be active against both gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
