    Notes: Effects of movement advance information were assessed on the prestimulus amplitude of the lateralized readiness potential (LRP), on the contingent negative variation (CNV), and on reaction time (RT). In a precuing paradigm with movement parameters hand, direction, and force, partial precues provided advance information about either hand alone, hand plus force, or hand plus direction, and the full precue specified all response parameters. The full precue produced the shortest RTs and the largest CNV amplitude, precuing hand and force or hand and movement direction produced somewhat slower RTs and a somewhat smaller CNV amplitude, and precuing only hand yielded slowest RTs and the smallest CNV amplitude. In contrast, the LRP amplitude was largest for the full precue and was the same for the remaining precues. The CNV appears to index the central assembling of a motor program, and the LRP represents the implementation of the program at more peripheral levels.

    The Processing of Temporal Intervals Reflected by CNV-Like Brain Potentials (1991)

    Notes: The present study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) of the brain to improve the understanding of temporal processing. A reproduction paradigm was realized by presenting a visual stimulus (illuminated screen) for intervals of varying length. A few seconds after presentation of such standard intervals the visual stimulus was switched on again and subjects were asked to reproduce the duration of the standard interval by turning off the illumination after a corresponding interval had elapsed. The length of standard intervals varied randomly with each of the following lengths being presented 20 times: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 s. Reproduction was accurate for standard intervals up to 3 s but deteriorated with increasing interval length. Brain potentials during reproduction intervals of 1–3 s differed from those recorded during the longer intervals. A CNV-like slow negative shift developed during the shorter reproduction intervals. Negativity was reduced or even absent, when subjects had to reproduce standard intervals of 4 s or longer. The ERP results suggest that intervals shorter than 3–4 s may evoke a processing mode that is qualitatively different from the one dominating when periods in the range of several seconds have to be processed.

    Notes: Two experiments assessed the preparatory effects of advance information about response force and movement direction on the lateralized readiness potential (LRP). In a choice reaction time (RT) task, an imperative stimulus required an isometric flexion or an extension of the left or right index finger. Prior information about response force or about movement direction reduced RT and shortened the interval from the onset of the imperative stimulus up to the onset of the LRP. Advance information, however, about direction but not about force decreased the interval from LRP onset to the onset of the overt response. The identical pattern of results was obtained in a second experiment, in which each participant performed both precue conditions. The findings of both experiments support the notion that response force is specified before movement direction. These results are consistent with the view accordingly different mechanisms are involved in the specification of muscle force and movement direction.

    Notes: Miller, Patterson, and Ulrich (1998) introduced a jackknife-based method for measuring the differences between two conditions in the onset latencies of the lateralized readiness potential (LRP). The present paper generalizes such jackknife-based methods to factorial experiments with any combination of within- and between subjects factors. Specifically, we introduce a subsample scoring method to assess potential main and interaction effects on LRP onsets within conventional yet slightly adjusted analyses of variance (ANOVAs) and post hoc comparison procedures.

    Notes: It is well established that reaction time (RT) is shorter when a response signal is preceded by a warning signal, because the warning signal causes the participant to prepare for the upcoming response. A review of chronometric and psychophysiological studies reveals the prevailing view that this temporal preparation operates mainly at a motor level speeding up rather late processes. To assess the locus of this preparation effect, we conducted two experiments employing the lateralized readiness potential (LRP). Contrary to this prevailing view, the results of both experiments clearly indicate that temporal preparation enhances the processing speed of relatively early processes, because a manipulation of temporal uncertainty affected RT, the P300 latency, and the stimulus-to-LRP interval but not the LRP-to-keypress interval.

    Notes: Summary Karl Wittmaack (1876–1972) was professor for Oto-Rhino-Laryngology at the universities of Jena (1908–1925) and Hamburg (1926–1946). He contributed a lot of pioneer work to experimental pathology of the ear. He left a unique collection of serial sections of temporal bones from animals (55,000 slides) and man (102,000 slides). This paper gives some data on Wittmaack's life, his temporal bone collection and the unpublished list of his publications.
